waste all your cap space on Erick Dampier? You guys are one of the only teams who can sign him to the kind of money he wants. I heard you guys were pursuing him. How would you feel about signing him?

Wow, quite the response from our most Active forum *cough**cough*

I don't think signing Dampier is the right thing for this franchise right now. Sure they want to win but I think rebuilding should be the main focus here. Signing 30 year old Damp to a long term contract will just hurt the rebuilding process.

I think the Hawks could play a role in getting a deal done. They have the cap space to sign Dampier and could then turnaround and trade him for team not able to pay Dampier. The Hawks would be compensated with draft picks or young players and possibly an expiring contract in return. With Shaq moving to the Eastern Conference, the need for a big man becomes even more important for any teams hoping to get deep in the East playoffs.

Detroit has plenty of size, but a team like the Pacers need size right away, and have shown interest in acquiring Dampier. The Pacers traded one of their young assets to the Hawks already, Al Harrington, and I don't see the Pacers surrendering Bender to the Hawks either for Dampier.

In the West, teams have a chance to take advantage of Shaq's departure to solidify dominance in the paint. The Grizzlies would be a solid team to get involved with any deal involving Dampier. They have depth at every position and a lot young talent. The Grizzlies could offer the Hawks, Stromile Swift (sign and trade), Dahntay Jones (leading the team in scoring in the summer leagues) and Bo Outlaw (expiring contract) in return for Dampier.

    Hawks roster becomes

    PG - Terry
    SG - Diaw
    SF - Childress
    PF - Harrington
    C - Swift

    Bench
    Josh Smith
    Dahntay Jones
    Bo Outlaw
    Chris Crawford
    Alan Henderson
    Jason Collier

If Damp is going to do a sign and trade, it is going to be with the Warriors IMO.

My opinion on Dampier, is he's going to sign with whoever gives him the most money. Both the Warriors and Hawks have the ability to do a sign and trade, but the Hawks would have a better chance at finding someone to trade with. The Warriors are in more of a position to make a run at the playoffs, while the Hawks are completely rebuilding. The teams who want Dampier are in competition with the Warriors, so they won't be willing to give the Warriors any player to make them better right away. The Hawks would be willing to gamble with draft picks, young stars, or players with expiring contracts to make test their luck in next year's free agent pool.

I may be mistaken but if a player is signed to a contract, isn't there a clause that says he cannot be traded until the next season?

I'm glad the hawks are trying

(off-topic) <u>Shape</u> your sig is hilarious rofl lol

It feels good to hear that your home team is pursuing big name guys like K-mart to better the team. Too bad we didnt land the man but oh well.

At first i trully was shocked when atl started trying to free up space. But i see they are looking for long run and their pf and center in Shareef and Ratliff were not in any way set to go on that much longer and could truly help atl in future.

I believe al was a great pickuo for atl.

And as shape said above i dont really see any since in signing dampier to a big contract ( because i believe this would put atl in same predicament as before with shareef and ratliff) unless it was a sure fire sign and trad involved that could possibly include that salivating trade that Shape proposed earlier.

all in all i'm proud of the hawks for at leats trying finally i can say the gms and mangaers and hawks orginization look like they have there heads on straight.

Btw i love the aquisions that we aquired after the trade of rasheed which before i was a bit skeptical of until i got to see them play with jt.

    Don't remind me [IMG]

I also like the direction the Hawks are taking with the draft and acquiring Al Harrington. They are building a young defensive squad, with the ability to score. If they can keep Harrington, Childress, and Diaw together they will have a formidable perimeter defense. Josh Smith will have time to develop his game with these players as well, and if things go as planned, he should be their primary scorer.

I don't think Jason Terry will have a long term future in Atlanta, but the Hawks should be able to find a replacement for him. There is an abundance of scoring guards in the league all looking for a chance to be the one or two option.

The Hawks do lack in the big man department, but they will have a lot of cap space again next summer, and they still have a chance at picking up a couple of free agents this summer.

Last year the Hawks surprised a lot of teams, and were called the "Giant Killers," prior to the Sheed deal. They have a tough task ahead of themselves winning back their fans, but a young exciting team might be the answer. If the Hawks do show progress, it will be a lot easier for them to land a big name free agent next season.

Some big men free agents for next year include:

    Zydrunas Ilgauskas
    Theo Ratliff
    Pau Gasol
    Kwame Brown
    Brendon Haywood
    Dasagna Diop
    Eddie Curry
    Tyson Chandler

Yes they do. I was expecting a trade to go down between the Hawks and Clippers on draft day involving a big man.

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Kwame Brown</div>
The Wizards will surely re-sign him. They've waited this long, and he's at the make or break point in his career. His potential is there, so I don't see why they wouldn't resign him.

I dont think itd be wise for Atlanta to use all their cap space on a career underachiever such as Dampier...he had ONE good year (in a contract year, mind u)...hes not worth wasting all ur money on...

This is why the Hawks should sign and trade Dampier. There are teams willing to pay Dampier, they simply don't have the cap space. However, Atlanta does and could work out a deal by signing Dampier and then trading him for more draft picks, young talent, or expiring contracts.

Dampier only had one breakout season, in a contract year, but last year he played most of the minutes because the Warriors were hit with injuries. So the gamble is if Dampier can produce these numbers if he gets starter minutes again. I believe he can and will, besides he's one of the few capable big men in the NBA.

I might have missed if this question was answered. Obviously if the player agrees to a sign-and-trade, he may be traded immediately after signing to that team. Otherwise, the waiting period for a signed FA or rookie is 3 months or Dec 15, whichever is later.

There's other trade exceptions, but they're sort of rare, and there are alot more restrictions, as well.
