If you think about it Mullin might be trying to do a 88 pistons blueprint. Having a 3 guard combo ie. Joe Dumars, Isiah Thomas, with Vinny Johnson off the Bench= Derek Fisher, Speedy Claxton, with Nick Van exel coming off the bench. Undersize hardworking center Bill Lambier=Adonal Foyle. We might not have a rebounding machine like Dennis Rodman but I rather have an all around power forward like Troy Murphy. Small forward the Pistons had Mark Aguirre, the Warriors have Dunleavy who has potential but has not reach it or the Warriors could put J-rich or Pietrus. Small forward is still the weakest position for the Warriors but I think I can see what Mullin is trying to accomplish do any of you agree?

I really have no problem with the moves Mullin has made so far but only time will tell.

So are you sugesting that Mullin is planning on sitting J-Rich and Pietrus and going with this starting lineup:

    pg: Fisher
    sg: Speedy
    sf: Dunleavy
    pf: Murphy
    c : Foyle

I think it will be exciting to watch nve/speedy/fisher share minutes and have two in at the same time. It seemed to work out last year with Speedy/NVE playing together last year.

That would be an interesting combo since DFish and Claxton have great steals per turnover ratios.

according to a news channel out of oregon, the warriors and blazers may be close to a trade in which golden state would send nick van exel to portland in return for dale davis and one or two other players.

here's a link to a blazer's blog which recounts the story:

Wow this sure doesn't sound very sexy. Unless the unnamed player is Victor Kryapa that 6'9 defensive forward or Qyntel Woods.

if this trade happens, the warriors would have both davis and robinson on the roster meaning there wouldn't really be a need to make the trade with the knicks. at least with this trade they remove van exel's contract from the books and would be making room for fisher to get his "starter-like" minutes, and they'd be bringing in a guy in the the last year of his contract that can play some minutes at the 5. not sure if wood's is the other guy, but i think his contract would work, and there's a team option in his contract for '05/'06.

here is wood's contract (via hoopshype):
    Qyntel Woods
    04/05 - $1,172,160
    05-06 - $1,867,250 (team option)
    06/07 - $2,690,707
    07/08 - $0

I'm thinking this deal is going down if Damp changes his mind and play for Atlanta. Plus, maybe we might get that 7'3 Korean dude. We always wanted somebody that could combat Yao right?

The other guy I'm interested in is Sergei Monya. But I'm not certain the blazers would give up either of their small forward rookies.

What would you trade for goldenstatefan if this was the trade you wanted to get some small forward depth?

I'll give a little description of why I like Khryapa, Monya or Sueng Jin (if he's not injured).

Monya is considered the most NBA ready. He's athletic, he's defensive minded, and he's got an outside shot. Plus he's 6'8.

Khryapa is another guy that i'm interested in because he's like andrei kirilenko, whom I'm a big fan of. He doesn't have offense but he could be a great role player where we need size defensively. He's 6'9 and he can do a little bit of everything too, but he's skinny but he might become very good defensively like Kirilenko.

Ha Seung Jin I want because he is 7'3 and you can't teach 7'3. Plus if he sucks you can just waive him. I mean having a project around like him might not be bad. He won't be Yao Ming but he could give you points on a mismatch.

I'd do that trade in a second. Davis comes off the books next year like NVE. I think the second player would be Stepania or Dickau, though Khryapa, Monia or even Ha would be preferable.

One thing is for sure. Davis would be another strong and experienced defender. What Crob does to big perimeter players, Davis does on the low block. Could you imagine Davis as Murphs' mentor and Crob as Beindris'?

interestingly, when the blazers decided to draft both russians i kind of had the feeling that they were going to eventually deal one of them, given that they are relatively similar.

comparing the two, monya was expected to be drafted significantly higher than khryapa (draftcity and nbadraft.net had monya at 14 to utah, but they decided to go with snyder instead; khryapa was closer to 25-28th overall).

given the choice, i'd probably go with monya. as you've mentioned, monya is 6'8 and described as strong, has quickness, and good leaping ability...and reported to be the better perimeter defender of the two, and a solid one-on-one and team defender.

offensively, it sounds like khryapa is better...the better shooter, better passer, better rebounder, plays intelligently, and is a leader. khryapa is described as a good team defender, but may not have the quickness to guard smaller/quicker forwards. it seems that perhaps there is some similarity between dunleavy and khryapa...but i've only seen one of them play.

according to chad ford, who for all his faults and apparant lack of actual analysis-skills does seem to have quite a few contacts around the league, seems to believe that portland will keep monya and send khryapa back to play with cska. if this is the case, perhaps portland would willing to trade him...especially given portland's history of making the playoffs (and missing out on them last year) and therefore wanting to win right now (quite frankly, i can't see them contending for the playoffs with the team they have). the rumors about cheeks wanting telfair were true, if they are true about nve as well then the warriors should try to take full advantage. acquiring khryapa would give the warriors the ability to add him to the roster or leave him in russia, quite a luxury (and one of the real advantages to drafting an international prospect).

the fact that monya's physical maturity/athletic ability and ability to play defense are so often mentioned is intriguing, because athletic ability and defense were the qualities that were used in various reports to describe pietrus and biedrins prior to them being drafted. if the warriors were able to compile those three players and develop them i would have no problems with that.

as for khryapa goes, if he is as good offensively as some websites describe while also having the ability to play good team defense - and can transfer it to the nba - then he could be a very good addition to the team...perhaps he could even make dunleavy expendible in the future if mdj doesn't show the kind of improvement that a 3rd overall pick might be expected to make.

here's an excerpt of what chad ford wrote june 25th, after the draft, about the two players:

"Q: What happened to Sergey Monya?
Marc Fleisher, Monya's agent, is asking the same question. The Jazz, Celtics, Hawks and Nuggets all had shown significant interest, and Fleisher felt that there was no way Monya would slip past No. 16. But a few things conspired to make him slide. The Celtics wrestled between Monya and Jefferson but felt they needed to go with size. The Jazz were stunned that Kirk Snyder had slipped to them at No. 16 and opted for him instead.
Moreover, several teams were concerned Monya did not have a clear buyout number for this year, telling Insider they believed Monya would have to stay at CSKA in Moscow for at least one more year. Ultimately, teams like Utah and Boston felt they needed to get a player who could play this year.
However, Fleisher told Insider on Friday there's a decent chance Monya will be in Portland this season. The Blazers want him now and are preparing to negotiate with CSKA. His teammate, Viktor Khryapa, has a minimum buyout and can come to the NBA whenever the Blazers want him."

Those are good points goldenstatefan and meshfox. I think that Monya is the guy to get. Khryapa isn't really a scorer from what I'm getting on some nbadraft sites and they say Monya can do a lot more and he's athletic enough. But don't get me wrong Khryapa would be just fine for me. These guys are young though and either one could develop a better shot and improved offensive game with our coaches.

I would not mind having Davis at all, especially with his expiring contract. You think he still remembers when Troy Murphy dunked on him and than stared him down?[IMG]

Whats Mullin going to do next? trade Jason Richardson for Bryon Russell?

I didn't expect to see a GM make so many bad moves in so little time. First overpays for Foyle and Fisher, now this? I'm sure he could also get more value back for Dampier. I'm sure Memphis have by far more to offer than NY.

Thinking Mullin has some master plan that will turn the Warriors into the old Pistons is rather wishful thinking, I'm sure I can think of worse ways to put it, but I'm kind.

From Portland's perspective, I don't get it. Clearly, their roster is full of expiring contracts to make a play for free agents next year, but I don't know why they would give up a top prospect that costs them only $1 mil a year for the next 4 years, just to get a little more cap space (I actually don't think the NVE or DD make a diff, because Portland is so far over).

Anyway, if it goes through, we'll probably get Dickau (maybe Monya if the contract is becoming a problem), because they have Telfair, and DD is outclassed physically at this level. But that didn't keep Mully out of the all-star game. And I'd probably do the trade because it gets NVE out of here, since he's gone next year and he could be a bad influence on the young guys.

I will say this, if we keep going the "character over athleticism" route for too much longer, we're going to look like the Twardzik days again. Isn't TF playing somewhere? [IMG]

Crap, you know what I'm thinking? Jrich is on the move, possibly. Maybe to Portland? For who though? Mullin better leave Richardson alone that's all I can say. They keep trading away or letting my favorite players go.

i kind of have the same feeling. fegan is clearly using richardson and murphy as leverage to get the warriors to deal dampier to the situation he wants...which appears to be ny. ("He's certainly not setting Dampier up to play for somebody's midlevel exception," the executive said of Fegan, "or someone is going to be in serious trouble."; http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?...11001224120.xml)

it's going to be very interesting to see what mullin does, he better be sure about who he wants to keep on this roster before doing anything with dampier. it's a quite a gamble to take on bad contracts as a "good faith" gesture towards an agent, and if they don't they may have to trade j-rich and/or murph or risk them leaving for nothing.

I'm not a fan of Dan Dickoww. He was awesome during his days at Gonazaga but man they can keep him. I know we can waive him after this year, but that's not the point. Where is the sexy deal involving young talent either at center or small forward? We need some help at small forward because we ain't putting up with any more slow guys unless they hustle and shoot like Brian Cardinal. I'm going to be so mad if we don't get either Khryapa, Sergei Monya, Juco standout Qyntel Woods, or at least Ha Seung Jiin.

Against a defensive stalwart like Gilbert Arenas and 6'3" Early Boykins? I don't believe it. I'm kidding btw. He's a good shooter, but don't expect him to create much off the dribble because the dude is slow and because he's undersized, it makes it harder to shoot over guys. Frankly, I don't see him working on our team because like I said before we need dribble penetration and speed from our guards (any lightning quick guard that is hard for a bigger guy to stay in front of). You get to the rim at will you create tons of scoring options for those around you or you can get fouled and go to the line. Sometimes I think Mullin is patterning players after himself. I mean slow, pure shooters? Don't get me wrong, I love good shooting because it's a basic fundamental and it helps to spread the floor, but what about the all around game and physical talent? Sheesh. Give us another athlete.
