I'm feeling like a soothsayer, here. In the thread aabout being the Warriors GM, I suggested trading a Warriors PG, (although I had thought Claxton) to the Blazers to get Dale Davis. I was shocked when I heard it on the radio.

This is an excellent trade. We've just added a guard who's heralded as having a solid yet undiscovered game, and a backup center. I also think people forget just how good Dale Davis used to be. As a backup big man, he's likely got a few more years of ball in him.

    PG - Claxton/Fisher/Dickau
    SG - Richardson/Pietrus
    SF - Dunleavy/Pietrus
    PF - Murphy/Robinson
    C - Foyle/Davis

I like what I've seen from Mullin thus far.

Also, consider this... what kind of salesman is Chris Mullin? To talk the Blazers into giving up their excellent defensive veteran big man and a young point guard to get a 33 year old PG on bad knees who missed almost all of last season?

I think the Blazers had interest in NVE and another reason the trade went through, was becuase the players Mullin got back were on the last year of their contracts.

But I agree with you Casske, it was a great trade.

I kind of wanted something more but considering what we gave up its pretty good. I actually wanted to try and dump Robinson because he was a former blazer and maybe he wanted to return to the team he had his best years with. I don't know if its enough to warrant giving up a rookie, but we're going to be jampacked at the PF spot and we need a small forward. Do you think Cliff will have to play small forward this year? If so we would have a hard time stopping Carmelo Anthony or any fast small forward. Besides you want Cliff to be a low post defender not a perimeter defender. Unless I'm missing some aspect of his game I haven't seen yet?

we have 19mil in salary commitments next year, 31 if you include team options. That's still 14mil under the cap next year. If we do a S&T with Damp, we'll be over the cap this year, but I think the Luxury tax kicks in at 54mil. Due to the whole 'Bird rights' rule, effectively we can sign Damp for 10 mil this year without penalty. This is my understanding. Any future agents in the room?

Seriously. JustBBall should hire a fulltime cap specialist for these boards! The NBA salary cap and trading rules are so bizarre it's a wonder anyone gets a trade done.

The one thing I want the W's to be sure to do is have the $ to re-sign Biedrins and Pietrus when their contracts are up. I know that's far into the future, but looking at the Fish and Foyle contracts, and assuming we keep Murph, JRich, and Dunleavy, we are going to have a lot of salary obligations by the time AB and MP are due for a raise.

Does anyone know a site that explains the cap and trading rules for non-future agents?

I'm hoping that they give all backup SG and SF minutes to Pietrus. He needs all the playing time he can get, and if he gets cooked, so be it. We'll be better off in the long run because his learning curve will shorten, and the W's need to know if he can play SF consistently.

Picking up a veteran swing man for one year might not be a bad idea, in case of injuries.

You've got the math abour right, Mesh. The luxury cap should actually be higher because the TV contract increases every year, and the luxury cap is adjusted by total NBA income including things such as that. I still doubt Cohan wants to even get close to it, though. He still has to pay that couple of million of salary.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any cap questions. I don't know everything, but I do know enough to be able to tell you the difference between a mid-level exception and an early bird exception...

And as odd as it sounds, I like answering cap questions.

Warriors redux already posted it, but I just wanted to reiterate that its the best salary cap FAQ out there. While it isn't necessarily easy to understand, it makes it as easy as possible:

    http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm

Also, you probably already know these sites, but I'll post them anyway just in case other people don't know about them:

Hoopshype is the best source out there for the actual salaries of players. It isn't 100% accurate, but it's close:

    http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries.htm

And RealGM's trade checker is a nice site as well. Once you have a handle on how NBA trades work, you can figure out trades by just looking at the salaries on Hoopshype, but if you don't want to do the math yourself, you can just use the trade checker. The only drawback is that there's no way to do a trade involving a S&T'd player, plus they no longer post the player's actual salaries.

Hopefully we outscore the other team and then outproduce them. What about Dunleavy off the bench with Pietrus starting at small forward?
