List your favorite small forward candidates that we can sign through free agency or get through a trade. I hope we can do something with Memphis or Indiana because they have some pretty nice small forwards.

I dont think we can really sign anyone anymore. But if we could trade realisticly (not Melo) I would say number 1 on my list would either be Battier, or Miles, just off the top of my head...

    Hey Custodian:
We signed Foyle and Fisher to big contracts, remember? WE DON'T HAVE ANY $$$ TO SIGN A GOOD FREE-AGENT SMALL FOWARD! The only realistic way would be through a trade, and I like I said, it's going to be Glenn Robinson. He is a perfect fit, babay!

Well if we don't sign Dampier we got room to spend. And if we are cheap we could get Bryon Russell. I don't know. He's well passed his prime but he's known as a guy who can shoot and defend.

Yeah, I dont know how all that works. I thought we used up all the space on these guys that we could have used on Damp or some other FA. How are we going to sign Damp in a sign and trade? Wouldn't Damp's contract count against our salary cap this year, even if he got traded? Then next year, he is off our books? Am I right? How can we use this money to our advantage to sign a FA?

Would love to have Miller on the team but contract length and constant back problems would make him not that attractive.

    Childress is a natural 2 not a 3.

    Deng is the bulls future.

Iguodala is projected to be Allen Iverson's replacement as shooting guard (I think they'll move AI sooner or later)

Artest or Bender could be possibilities.

    VC is a natural 2.

Magette... I think he's a natural 2 as well and Richardson IMO will be better than him.

Desmond Mason is a shooting guard but he plays small forward because of Michael Redd. He's a good defender and I like the fact he is consistent and explosive.

Lamar Odom I would like to have but he's one of those guys that doesn't play a true position. But he's still good and I wold like to get him as a good passing big man.

Peja I would like to have but he ain't going anywhere.

Jefferson is money, Prince is awesome on defense and he's got range and length and footspeed.

Keith Van Horn reminds me too much of what we got with Dunleavy.

Jiri Welsch is more of a tall 2 guard.

Woods is a 2 but he could play some 3. He's kind of a weak defender.

Carmelo we got no chance at.

Luke Walton is like a power forward trying to play a small forward.

Marquis Daniels is a two guard.

Caron Butler is all right. He's compared to Paul Pierce but I don't think his game is anything like that.

Casey Jacobsen is a two guard.

Drew Gooden = tweener but I'd give him a chance since he's a son of the bay area.

Finley, the "power guard" could be on the downside of his career any moment. I would still like to have him but he commands starters minutes still.

KG no chance in hell because the only time we had a chance at KG we blew it and picked Joe Smith.

Deavean George will be all right. He won't be a star but he'll be a good player.

I got those from ESPN's site on SF's. I know not all of them are really SFs, but I used it as a guideline. I know some of them are not realistic. Those were just the most recognizable names I saw.

For trading, dependent on Q-Rich and Phoenix's other moves, there's an outside chance the W's could trade for Jacobsen if we wanted to go after him. I'm not to sure who I'd target in trades, though.

For free agency, there's not too much cap room if at all, but we could have 2 exceptions. The Million Dollar exception can be used every other year and sign a player for about double/triple the league minimum. As per the Minimum player exception, we can sign as many players to contracts for the league minimum for up to 2 years. There are bound to be some, hungry SF types who would fit in. I think our rotation is pretty set, so that guy won't get many minutes, but I would rather take a chance on a rookie than on an aging veteran.

Jacobsen wouldn't be a bad pickup if we're looking for shooters. He's no Thunder Dan Majerle but he could be the guy we need to make defenders pay for leaving him open on the wing.

Does Jacobsen do much else than shoot the ball? I know he had some big games last year for the Suns.

He's a smart player and little know this but he's a good defender when he isn't being outquicked. He has a high basketball IQ.

Sounds a lot like Dunleavy. Wasnt Dunleavy and Jacobsen recruited by Duke and Stanford and regarded as close to equal talents?

He's a better defender than Dunleavy, but Jacobsen is a scorer like Dunleavy. BTW I'm not saying i'm big on Jacobsen, but we're desperate for shooters and he'll go for cheap and understands Montgomery's system. Dunleavy is the better all around player though.

Also I think Jacobsen is different from Dunleavy in that Jacobsen makes his wide open shots. LOL [IMG] Casey always had big games against Dunleavy when Stanford faced Duke. That's what I was told. I don't have the stats to back it up but I asked some friends what Casey's game was like.

The sign and trade is just a intentional loophole in the CBA to facilitate trades. It allows a team to sign a player and immediately trade him to another team without having to wait the usual three months (or until Dec. 15th, which ever is longer) before trading that player.

So the Warriors could S&T Damp to a team like Atlanta or LAC (who have the cap space to absorb his contract) without having to send an equal amount of salaries back to the Warriors. There are advantages to doing a S&T for the acquiring team and the player. The advantage for the team is that it would allow a team like Indiana to acquire Damp, even though it doesn't have cap space to sign him outright as a free agent. The advantage to the player is that the S&T could give him 12.5% annual salary increases whereas the max any other team could offer him as a free agent is 10%.

As for small forwards, here's my ranking:

    1. Artest: great player with a very reasonable contract (and it's long to, so it will only get better)

A distant 2. Bender: Pacer fans are at least as high on his potential as Warrior fans are on Pietrus or Dunleavy. He's got 3 years left on his deal and he's very pricey. It's a gamble because it would tie up the Warriors cash the next three years and there's no guarantee Bender will develop. The good news is that because its a 3 year deal, the Warriors will have his Bird rights and could offer him more than any other team, but since he'd be an UFA, there's no guarantee that hey'll keep him.

    3. Robinson: He's a headcase, but he's also a career 20 ppg scorer and after playing a year with Iverson, he should have learned that he can't shoot all the time. He's coming off his worst season as a pro, but this is also his contract year, so you can expect him to be on his best behavior. It's a huge risk to trade for him, but at the same time it would mean the Warriors would get rid of Eschmeyer's salary, so they'd have even more cap space next year.

By the way, don't discount the importance of getting rid of Esch. If the Warriors drop his dead weight it's like shaving 1.5 mil off the first three years of Foyle's contract and Fisher's contract. If the Robinson experiment is a disaster, they could always waive him or trade him after Dec. 15 for someone else.

A VERY distant 4 (basically last): Battier, or anyone else in the Western Conference for that matter: If you'll notice the common thread in my rankings its that Damp is going to the east. The Warriors are building a team in the same mold as Memphis, and its very possible that they'll be competing for a playoff spot. Trading Damp to Memphis would drastically improve them, certainly more than Battier would improve the Warriors.

I cannot stress this enough, it would be a big mistake to keep Damp in the west, especially if he goes to Memphis where he'd be the missing piece for them. Now that Mullin has the upper hand in negotiations and most of the top western teams no longer have their MLE to use on Damp, he can dictate where Damp goes.

The best case scenario would be if Damp goes to a team in the east and Swift signs with the Hawks. For that to happen, the Warriors should string Damp along as much as possible. Eventually Atlanta is going to make a move for Swift and if Damp's situation isn't resolved, West will be less likely to match Swift's offer sheet. This would leave Memphis with a huge hole in the middle, and will keep them from being a top team in the west.

I would have loved to have signed a bargain bin, vet sf to a one year contract using a portion of the MLE, but that can't happen now that Fisher hogged it all. But since I can't have it, and since the Warriors probably won't get Artest, I'd be perfectly content to let Dunleavy and Pietrus play sf.

Fisher, Davis, Robinson, and Foyle should be able to provide enough veteran leadership to keep the youn guys focused. Hopefully Dunleavy and Pietrus can stay healthy most of the year. If they go down at the same time, Cliff or Jason will be forced to play out of position, or worse yet the Warriors may be forced to sign Dan Langhi to a 15 day contract and start him...oh the horror.

I'm not 100% sure about Jacobsen being recruited by Duke, but I think he was. He was a big time, national recruit, so I imagine he would be. I still remember him KILLING euros in the Nike hoop summit and dominating the McDonald's game.

I know Montgomery heavily recruited Dunleavy to Stanford. Montgomery brought it up once or twice when the Warriors hired him.

I believe Jacobsen was rated higher than Dunleavy coming out of high school. Everyone said that Dunleavy wasn't strong enough to play right away since he was supposed to be a pg, but then grew 5 inches in his senior year and had to move to sf.
