I'm not even going to waste my time with reading anything by Chad Ford. [IMG]

You can't take the fool seriously because he is such a hater.

Ford's point is that both guys have some questions regarding their game (see below)...from the W's perspective, it would be nice to get these guys back at a reasonable price, assuming we want them.

Question to all you W fans: how much should the W's offer these guys? Do we even try to re-sign both of them?

    Jason Richardson, SG, Warriors
Last year's stats: 18.7 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 44 percent shooting from the field
The skinny: Richardson improved in almost every aspect of his game last season. He improved his scoring, mid-range shot and willingness to put the ball on the floor and get to the line. For much of the season, he was the team's most consistent scoring option. He's an excellent rebounder for a guard. Here's the problem. There aren't a lot of teams that will pay big money for a two guard who can't shoot the 3 (28 percent last season) and won't play good defense. With second-year guard Mickael Pietrus in the fold, it's conceivable that the Warriors will wait until next summer and take their chances there. Then again, with Dan Fagan representing him, that could turn out very messy for the Warriors.

    Troy Murphy, PF, Warriors
Last year's stats: 10 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 44 percent shooting from the field
The skinny: He's coming off a pretty tough year in which a "stress reaction" in his right ankle limited him to 28 games. The lackluster season was a blow to Murphy, who put up very solid numbers (11.7 ppg, 10.2 rpg) during his sophomore season. With Erick Dampier likely out, there will be a great opportunity for Murphy to redeem himself next season. As it stands now, his value isn't much higher than the mid-level. If he can duplicate his sophomore season, however, he too could see a flood of cash roll his direction next summer.

If Richardson continues to improve this season (20ppg, 45+fg%, 30+fg%, defense) then I could see offering him at least $8-10per season.

If Murphy duplicates his sophmore season, I could see $6-8m per season.

Well if both players stay healthy and they know this is a contract year they'll play for that money. I mean that's why they got Fegan right? I would give him 6-7 mil per season. Let's not kid ourselves about Jrich. He's good but there's a lot of two's out there.

Pietrus better get that shoulder healthy so we can give him 20 minutes a night, and keep JRs numbers down! Ford makes a good point, though. JRich doesn't handle the ball well, shoot consistently, or play consistent D. I read somewhere he played PF in high school, didn't play guard 'til college. That makes sense with his weaknesses and that he's such a good rebounder.

But with his physical gifts, all it takes is one team to offer too much betting on his upside. We can offer him an extension before Oct. 29, but I'd let it ride. I think Murph, Fish, and Dun are going to get more shots this year, so JR might see his numbers slip.

With Damp gone, Murph could end up having a pretty big year, statistically. I like Murph, but I think he's kind of limited. He's never going to be quick, and I think quick is the most important physical tool to have in this game (no sub for a good J). But a PF that is willing to bang and can hit from 15 will get some attention.

I have a big doubt that Fegan will take 6-7 million per season for JRich. The Warriors are paying Fisher and Foyle about that same amount. If I'm Fegan, I put up a high number for the Warriors to match, around 7-9 mil per season. If they want to spend this much money on Foyle and Fisher, they are going to have to spend money on JRich too. And if they don't, he can go somewhere else like Arenas did. I really don't want to have things happen like that, but that's how things work these days with agents. And I guess things can go similarly with Murphy and all the other upcoming free agents.

Also does anybody know what JRich thinks about these moves lately and the organization? I know I read that Dunleavy likes Montgomery, but what does JRich think? I guess there hasn't been anything written about that, at least that I've read. I wonder if he's still as high about coming back and staying a Warrior for a long time as he was when he was talking about the topic of free agency for him in the future. I think he made comments something about him wanting to stay a Warrior in the future, early in this offseason or like directly after the regular season. I wonder if those feelings have changed lately...

Well that's what I'd give Jrich. Maybe a mil more but not more than what Magette is getting. If we didn't have Pietrus I'd think it over, but I'm a big fan of defensive players. The positive thing about Jrich is he's a cool guy and he could be a real good leader and our team has lacked a leader for a long time. But he can't expect to demand a super high salary when he can't carry a team by himself especially a player that has been trying to learn how to play shooting guard for quite some time now. You gotta let the organization spend the money to surround Jrich with good players so that this team can compete in the playoffs. Because if Jrich gets overpaid he's out of here like that bad contract in Antwan Jamison and Jrich would lose his status as the number 1 guy in Warriorland. So he's got to name a fair price.

I do agree that 6-8 million is fair. But that's not how the agent is going to look at it. Fegan is going to say, you overpaid for Fisher and Foyle, don't be underpaying JRich now with a contract that close to what you are paying Fisher. And if you don't want to give JRich the money we can leave just like Arenas and possibly Dampier this year. Maybe next year Mullin and Fegan can come to an agreement. But there is going to be a lot of talking and negotiating going on. It's not going to be easy to have JRich and Fegan expecting too "fair" of a contract, based on their signings in the past. That's just how it works I think.

Man if only the ping pong balls fell to #1 rather than #3 in the 2002 draft. We'd have a true sense of direction in this franchise.

I'm predicting big things for Richardson and Murphy. With Damp out of the picture, and if Murphy stays healthy, he's easily a 16/10 guy. As for Richardson, at this time last year, everyone was down on his game. He improved tremendously from year 2 to year 3, and I fuly expect him to do the same this year.

Unless a Damp trade brings in a guy like Artest, Glen Robinson, or Marion, Richardson will be the unquestioned #1 option on the team. There were such high expectations for NVE last year that I think Musselman was reluctant to hand the reigns over to Richardson. But he said throughout the year that he wanted to be the team's go to guy, and by the end of the season he earned that right. It will be very interesting to see how he performs next year. I don't think its out of the realm of possibility to see him get 22/7/3 next year.

If he does, and the Warriors are above .500 at the all star break, I think you'll see him get serious all star consideration. Sort of this year's Michael Redd.

I'd love to see the Warriors lock up Murphy and Richardson before the start of this season. If they could sign Murph to a 6 year deal in the 36-40 mil range and Richardson to a 6 year deal in the 50 mil range, I'd be completely happy. Both should command much more than that by this time next year, so if Mullin has faith in the guys, he should lock them up now.

Another thing to consider is the fact that the new CBA may limit contracts to a 3 year max so players may want to opt for the security of a long term deal now.

    Walker,

Richardson and Murphy can be extended right now rather than later? Dang what are we waiting for? Let's try and do it now then if they're are willing.

JRich will command a 60 million dollar contract at this rate. He isn't worthy of a max deal right now. I personally think he will have a huge year.

Why would Fegan be pissed Foyle and Fisher make 6 and 4.9 to start? Both their contracts are 40 million and JRich's would be 20 million more if he were to sign for 60. The reason I am saying 60 is because Q-Rich just got 60. Their on the same level as shooting guards go.

I say give Murphy something now that is reasonable, (Brian Cardinal, Battier) range of 39 mil and hold off on Jrich until after the season, even though I think he will have a huge year as well, the market for shooting guards is always undervalued, so he'll get what Q got.

No way you sign them now. Make them work for their pay, evaluate, and decide if they are part of the future. If you sign them to extensions, you can kiss our cap room goodbye.

Neither guy's going to take us to the playoffs, and JRich is only our #1 option because we don't have a real #1 option. There are lots of good 2's out there that can do a lot of what JRich can do, and more. He has gotten better, but his greatest attribute is still his ability to jump. That will not win championships.

Also, look at the market for restricted FAs this year. No one is getting offers. Why overpay when it's likely they might have to re-up with us at a reasonable price, anyway. In addition, there are a lot of good RFAs next season, and our guys really don't stand out. If you have access to Insider, there is a good article on this.

Finally, there is the chance of injury. If they miss the season, they will be cheap. If Murph hurts that foot again, I don't want to be the team holding a 5 year contract for him. Flexibility is the name of the game.

One caveat: the CBA will likely shorten the max length of a contract, so if one of these guys wanted 6-7 years of security in return for less money, I'd be ready to listen.

That's what I meant 6-7 for less money. Hey it's worth shot and that would make them easy to trade if they don't develop into stars in the league [IMG]
