    Q&A with Samuel Dalembert

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Chris, Livonia, Mich.
How did you take interest in basketball? And how did the change from Haiti to the United States affect you?

Dalembert: I got interested the first time I saw old Doctor J dunk highlights in 1992, and I started loving it and starting playing in 1995. The only difference is the change from soccer to basketball, and the weather ... hot to cold.

    Andy, Port-au-Prince, Haiti
How do you feel to be the only Haitian playing in the NBA right now?

Dalembert: It's an honor. I know I have the flag to represent and I have to be a great player on and off the court. Olden Polynice was the first player from Haiti in the NBA. We played on the Sixers together for three months when I was a rookie.

    Kevin, Michigan City, Ind.
Mr. Dalembert, what do you think about the loss of Eric Snow, and the addition of Kevin Ollie and Kedrick Brown?

Dalembert: Eric Snow is a great player and he knows basketball like the palm of his hand. He taught me when I was playing. He didn't have the great ability, but he knows the game as a point guard.

    Mastodon, London, Ontario, Canada
Will Samuel Dalembert play for the Canadian National team anytime in the future? ... I'll start a petition to get you on the team!

Dalembert: I would love to. I tried, but we couldn't get the paperwork together in time. I hope to in the future. My mom is Canadian and my sister is Canadian.

    Mark, Buffalo, N.Y.
What do you hope to contribue at the basketball camp and what would you like the players and kids to take away from it?

Dalembert: I look forward to having fun and not make it look too serious, and teach them some of the basic stuff. I'm really impressed with the facilities here. It's fun gathering all the kids. It shows you that even if they don't speak the same language, basketball is universal.

    Justin, Canal Winchester, Ohio
Mr. Dalembert, I am a 15-year-old from Ohio and I was just wondering what you did to make it to the NBA and how you got as far as you did. ... Can you give me some pointers on how to improve my game?

Dalembert: Keep playing every day and have a good work ethic. Perseverance wins out. One day your opportunity will come.

    Nafeese a.k.a. franchise, Philadelphia
"Samuel Dalembeast!" That's what I call you. ... I want you to keep beasting boards, blocking shots and get them nasty dunks, oops and putbacks. Make me proud this season, big man.

Dalembert: Thank you and I will keep beasting.</div>

True, but the Virgin Islands (where Tim was born) are unincorporated territories of the United States, therefore making him elligible to play. Sam was born in Haiti so he would have to play for their team, though his mother and sister were born in Canada, so there could be a loophole.

I thought that duncan could play for team usa because although he was born in the virgine islands he had earned citizenship into the USA and lived here since he was 18 years old so that was the reason I thought. Didnt know that the islands were part of the USA.

Anyway yeah there has to be a loop whole if his parents are from canada because melo his dad was born in puerto rico and is puerto rican so this year if the USA hadent asked him to play he was gona accept a invitation for the puerto ricans mens basketball team and play for them in the olympics.

If dalembert applys for US citizenship I think he would then become eligable to play for the USA team I believe not sure if that is what duncan did though after reading your post about the islands being part of US territory. If his mom was born in canada though if he used a loop whole wouldnt he still have to play for there team and not the US one.

No, if anyone applies for US citizenship they cannot just come and play for the team. With that, then other international players could play for the US as well, people like Stojakovic, Nowitzki, and other international players. Duncan being able to play for the US national team is because the Islands are a United States territory.
