<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Look for the Mavs to make a push for disgruntled New Jersey Nets star Jason Kidd. While the Nets seem to be in a cost-cutting mode, moving Kidd's $90 million contract over the next 5 years would be optimal to the Mavs who can give up recently acquired Calvin Booth (three years remaining, $19 million), Jerry Stackhouse (three years, $22.5 million), Tariq Abdul-Wahad (three years, $22 million), Tony Delk (two years, $6.5 million) and Christian Laettner (one year, $6.2 million). Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson seems pretty interested in the idea as well, as the Mavs have gone after Shaq earlier and remain in the Vince Carter rumors. "All the major names bandied about have some interest," Nelson said. "We have an interest in getting better defensively, making significant upgrades to our roster and giving our young group enough to make a run in the playoffs." Nelson also adds that players acquired in trades this summer, such as Stackhouse, Laettner and Booth, plus some already on the roster help make blockbuster deals possible. "These base hits put you in position to hit a grand slam," Nelson said. "There's no such thing as a grand slam until the bases are loaded. If you do the right thing consistently with smaller moves, it makes it easier to do bigger moves. "Smaller moves also protect against something unforeseen happening, like Nash leaving. If we didn't trade [Antawn] Jamison, we wouldn't have had Devin Harris."</div> http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap.php
I hope so, that means trade Bradley + Stack for a good C or something, that would make them a good title contender. Walker + Filler for Kidd and some jobber perfcet trade
I don't get why the Mavs are willing to pay Kidd (who is even older and who's health is in question) a ton more money than they were willing to offer to Nash. Nash fit perfectly in their system and was the leader of this team. Considering Cuban overspent for people like LaFrentz, Bradley, etc and he wouldn't even pay one of his most valuable players really confounds me.
Absolutley if we werent going to pay for Nash what makes Jason Kidd better. He's older, and he cant shoot. But Eclipse he is better than Walker, and Devin Harris could learn from the best point gaurd in the league right now. I think the difference in contracts would be a couple thousand. But I'd only do this trade if Walker is included. Kidd/Harris Stack/Quis' Finley/Howard Nowitzki/Najera Pavel/DJ/Booth
^ espn is reporting the potential deal to be Walker, Howard and a first round pick for Kidd. Would you do that deal now? You might get rid of Walker's contract but his contract was expiring anyways and you guys are now replacing an expiring contract with a huge one.
I would hate to give up Howard...... but to get Jason Kidd I'd pull the trigger on this trade. What show was it on sportcenter, PTI, Around the Horn???
Thanx. http://cbs.sportsline.com/nba/story/NBA_SC-RUMOR Says that its all untrue. I'm sick of the media talking before it happens. But I'll still keep hope of this trade going down.
Honestly, it seems like it wouldn't make sense for the Mavs to go after Kidd while refusing to sign Nash for much less. It really doesn't make seem to make any sense, but then again, it does make sense. First, Kidd is only one year older than Nash. Yes, he is now injured, but there's no reason to believe that he won't come back at 100%. Both play a uptempo game, but Nash gets knocked to the floor a lot more than Kidd who is an inch taller and 20 pounds heavier. Kidd plays the game at the same tempo as Nash, but he's much more in control of his actions. When Kidd starts to slow down, he'll still be the best passer in the game and will be a force in the league. I love Nash, but don't think that can be said of him. Secondly, Kidd is a much better defender (twice as many steals), and Kidd is a great rebounder (twice as many) and Kidd is a better passer (slightly more assist, but Nash's teammates shot a much higher percentage, Kidd would average 12A per game in Dallas). Nash, on the other hand, is a far better outside shooter. Add it all up, Kidd would upgrade the Mavs over last year, and not by just a little. Third, Kidd for Walker is wash financially, so, in an obscure way, trading Walker for Kidd vs resigning Nash actually saves the Mavericks $10M a year. And finally, Mark Cuban took quite a beating by letting Nash go. This is the kind of huge splash that will put the Mavs in the spotlight again and fill the seats. Anyone, even a Maverick hater, would have to admit that the Mavs would be a championship contender for the next five years. I say do it!
^ I disagree, Kidd or no Kidd, the Mavs aren't championship contenders. Even with Kidd, the Mavs still haven't adressed the fact that they're still a very bad defensive team. Basically they would have lost Nash, Jamison, Howard and Walker and replaced them with Kidd, Stackhouse, Laettner/Booth. not an upgrade at all

Players being dangled by the Mavs include Christian Laettner, Jerry Stackhouse, Tony Delk and Tariq Abdul-Wahad. **** there is NO way I would want any part of those players
I just dont see why the mavs are trying to get more gaurds and small forwards. We need some big guys or at least some defensive type of bigmen. I'd rather go for The Birdman, Stromile, Tskitisvili(although plays no D, but another 7' who can shoot is good), Kurt Thomas, and Dampier before even mentioning Vince or Kidd. No Offense Eclipse.

They had a good thing going and a real exciting team, they were only a couple guys away and then they went and broke up the team.
The Mavs screwed up in th eoffseason so far, if I were a mavs fan, I would be praying for cuban to mke some good moves later in the offseason. Here's a related article from the Star-Telegram(Free Registration): http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/basketball/9300582.htm

Look at the names you mentioned leaving Dallas - Nash (very bad defender), Jamison (very bad defender), Howard (good defender), Walker (very bad defender). Look at the names coming, Kidd (good defender), Stackhouse (won't be here), Laetner (won't be here), Booth (fairly good defender). We'd still have a need at center, but that's not the Mavericks biggest need in order to become a better defensive team. To be a better defensive team, Don Nelson needs to stress defense. This means, he'll have to put a center on the court at all times and play some guys like Najera, Howard, Daniels a lot more. Until he changes his mentality that if you can't score, you sit on the bench, they won't be able to be a good defensive team. I've always said, if Ben Wallace was a Mav, he'd play 10 minutes a game.
