There has been speculation that the Raptors and MLSE are interested in hosting the 2008 All-Star Weekend. If they do, the Raptors will have to pay 3 Million to the league for the Rights of the All-Star weekend, and also the organization does not get any of the money generated. Source FAN 590. I for one, would love to see the All-Star Weekend in Toronto, it'll give the team and city some credibility, and I actually only have travel 30 Minutes to see all the festivities.
But the city gets the millions generated by tourist activity, so the 3 mil isn't really anything major. I think the all-star game would be great here, I still remember when the Skydome hosted the baseball all-star game and it created a buzz around the city.

This would be great since i only live a few hours away. Hopefully tix won't be too impossible to get.
I'm guessing the city would reimburse the cost of hosting it because it'll probably get the money back and more from the revenue it generates around the city. Not that 3 million is anything to MLSE anyways, the media attention and publicity that it'll bring will more than make up for it.
there are no guarantees, u don't want to open up the public purse just at mlse's insistence. i?m fiercely opposed to corporate welfare, plus is 3 million so much for a robust corporate entity to come up with? why is it that corporations get considered for a piece of the goverment cheese when they clearly don't need it. moreover, reagan proved one thing in his presidency, trickle down economics doesn?t work emphatically. besides, canada's has had its share of regrettable government sponsored ventures, expo 67 and the 76 olympics come to mind.
It's 3 year and a half years from now, and its not a sure thing that i'll be in TO. If it is though, many of you might have relocated to a different city and be farther or closer to the ACC by then.
i heard about this on the radio this morning... they said city will earn about $70 milion if they host the allstar game...

Damn, if the ASG comes, I'm going for sure, even if I'm going to university somewhere else. It'll be the first time the city gets to hold the NBA All-Star game, so it will generate a lot of buzz, plus the lots of stars that will show up at the games, so it's all good. Btw, could anyone find a link that says more about this?
Here I am thinkiong that its like the olympics, and ASGs are every 4 yeaqs. I was about to shun these whole ideas witht he announcement of the next ASG(nvm, bad grammar). But where are this years, and next years ASGS to be held again? This would be great for the city and MLSE as a whole, we have a great thing going on here , and for us to hold it would be great. It generates revenue, and would increase tourism. I mean Caribana does great in drawing alot of tourism every year, but the All star Game would be flat out amazing. Our city is more than ready to handle it, with public transport and its booming nightlife and other activities readily available, that arenneeded during All Star Weekend. Maybe Peddie will do somehting good and ocnvince the MLSE's owner(who is that, BTW?) to pitch the 3 Million. I can't wait till we find out.
i live all the way in richmond hill.. half an hr if i drive fast.. anyway tdots competing with 3 other cities for the rights to host the all star festivities.. just hope it doesnt turn out like our bid for the olympics
