He is a young puertorrican bascketball player, between 20-21 years old.The most importan newspapper from PUERTO RICO said, that a couple of teams are interest in him including the ROCKETS.He is about 6'-6'1" but men, he is for real.PUERTO RICO won gold in central american young games(under 21) and silver in las americas tournament(we lost to USA).He was the leading scorer on bouth tournaments, and trust me they try to stop him, they put bigger and more athletic players on him. Last tour. avg. 24.8ppg. 7.2apg. 6.4rpg. 3.0spg.78%ft. 51%f3pb.Remember they only play 40min. games. I was very eceptic on Carlos Arroyo making the NBA and i was wrong, but this guy is better than Arroyo,he reminds me a young Jayson Kidd.He is not at Kidds level right now, but not many players are.Beside he is a youngster that should learn more in the rigth place:THE NBA. The ROCKETS should sing him, if not they are going to regreted.
I looked around the Internet and found a few links on him. http://www.gonu.com/mbasketball/barea.shtml http://www.bupipedream.com/022004/sports/s1.htm From his stats, he looks like a player with potential. He is an awesome scorer, but can also pass, having games of 14 and 10 assists. However, I doubt his ability to play in the league, considering the fact that he comes from a mig-major school and does not have very good size. He also has a scoring mindset, which might not be what we want, and I'm not sure if he can defend well. I'm not too negative towards him though, I hope he can turn out to be a gem if we sign him.
TRIP trust me, i had NEVER said, that some one reminds me J.KIDD before.I always see the negative side of the players. He avg 3 spg and im not sure if he will defend the same way a big guard does, but he defenitly play bigger than his size.He was 9th in rebounds that tournament and we have a 7'3" center that was drafted by the W.WIZARDS Peter John Rammos (the second leading scorer on the tour.) and even that he plays good(Peter) i dont think he is NBA material.Barea runs the floor like kidd,he possese the"rare gift"(court vision)and can shoot the 3.He may need some advice and TIME to adjust but he is young.I never though that Arroyo was going to be a starter in the NBA.We dont relly need a superstar, and im sure he can get the job done.
while this guy seems to be awesome statistically, just remember that the standards of the nba are very high. juam barea is prolly a great player, but he'd have to adjust pretty quickly. arroyo has had some time to adjust and he's doing gr8 now.. i thnk it wud be gr8 acquiring barea as a prospect, but he shudnt be our starting pg.. if we were to get him as our backup to jones or daniels, then we cud trade lue off for a backup center. don't thnk anything like that will happen though.. this barea guy might make his nba debut in the 05/06 season or summin..
I totally agree with you dakeem, thats why i said that 'he may need some advice and TIME to adjust'.Im just letting you guys know whats Houston scouting in the latin area.
yah he might need time to adjust but in the right system he might be very, very good. Look at how the "all stars" on Team USA are doing, they got smashed by Italy then barely got by Germany. As long as the guy can put the ball in the hoop and play defense and can adapt quickly, he has a chance to make it in the NBA.
Didn't Puerto Rico make the Olympics by beating out Canada? Will Barea be playing? I think it's better to judge him if he goes up against other NBA players.
Well, here's the Box Score for the game where the US totally blew out Puerto Rico. Barea didnt do too bad. http://www.usabasketball.com/men/2004/04_y..._game3_box.html 5 BAREA, Jose * 7 20 3 7 8 10 0 4 4 3 25 1 5 0 0 29
Hmm, what impresses me is his free throwing shooting and scoring ability. However, he only had one assist, and the USA team he played wasn't the Olympics team. That roster is a college-based team, so the competition level is way lower.
Barea don't have the same supporting cast that usa team has, it was 2 against 8 or 9.He probably felt the same way Tmac did in orlando.Remember we don't need a superstar we already have Tmac and Yao.Imagine him, giving the ball down low to Yao or knowing that he has Tmac next to him in a fast break.Just to informe you guys Carlos Arroyo won 4 PR national championchips in a row and he was a shooting guard, he became a point guard in the NBA and he is doing pretty good.Barea played a central america tour. a month ago, PR won gold and he was 1 rebound shy of a triple doble,27pts 9reb 12ass 4stl. Playing international, its tuffer that some pleople may think, specialy if they know how good you are.The DREAM TEAM did not knew how good some of those Italians were, but every body knows how good the dream team is that why they can't guarratee a gold medal this year.
Barea is the man, he'll be captain of the PR team in 2008, I wish he got drafted somehow, to the Heat in their last pick He's like a 5"11 version of Jason Kidd
More importantly, why is it everyone can go back pages and pages to find old topics while I can only look at the last 2 pages? It isn't fair I tell ya!
Man I thought this was some sort of new topic, I was so interested in it. Then I went down and saw that I posted and I was like "WTF?" Hah .. well, what ever happened to the guy?

More everyday and getting better, I just hope someone from Yugoslavia comes to play for the Rockets, like Nemanja Aleksandrov for example
