<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">August 4, 2004 - Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars announced today that the Detroit Pistons have acquired forward/center Derrick Coleman and center Amal McCaskill from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for forward Corliss Williamson. Coleman, 37, appeared in 34 games with the 76ers last season, averaging 8.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 24.8 minutes per game. He missed 48 games overall due to injury. Prior to last season, the Detroit native averaged double figures in 11 of his 13 NBA seasons, including a career-high 20.7 points per game during the 1992-93 season with New Jersey. In 776 NBA games, Coleman has averaged 16.6 points and 9.3 rebounds in 33.3 minutes per game and recorded 343 career double-doubles. He was selected to the All-NBA Third Team in 1993 and 1994, started at center for the Eastern Conference at the 1994 NBA All-Star Game and was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1991. McCaskill, 30, appeared in 59 games (three starts) last season, averaging 1.9 points and 2.3 rebounds in 8.5 minutes per game. He scored a career-high nine points and added six rebounds at New Jersey (2/8). In four NBA seasons, McCaskill has played 114 games with four teams - Orlando (1996-97), San Antonio (2001-02), Atlanta (2002-03) and Philadelphia (2003-04) - averaging 1.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. He made his first playoff appearance with San Antonio during the Spurs? 2002 playoff run.</div> Link Corliss's huge contract is now gone
As much as I love the Pistons, I think this is a good move for Coleman and the 76ers. It's a bad move for the Pistons because Coleman as you know is a bum. But I'm hoping they get him a ring so he can retire because he isn't going to produce much longer in his career. Corliss is a great pickup for the 76ers, JO wants to runs and I think Corliss does that alot better than DC. Plus is brings toughness and can hit the 3-ball.
wow where is Coleman gonna play? center? Pistons are stacked at the 4 spot with Wallace and McDyess...

Corliss was bad in the Larry Brown system. Many Piston fans wanted him gone all year and I'm sure you will find out why soon. Coleman in limited minutes should be effective, him being forced to play big minutes is not the best way to use him. This trade is more about cap space than bringing in talent.
AllNet ask anyone from Philly if Coleman is a bum and see what answer you get. He is one of the most talked about players in Philly for his bad work ethic.
Sorry, pgrud00 ... I have to disagree with the idea that Coleman is a bum. If he is used properly, half-court post-up offense ... he is very effective for short periods of time. And, that is exactly how he will be used in Detroit. I think the trade is good for both teams. Detroit gets 1 year out of DC, which he can give them, and the Sixers get a forward who can run the floor. Good move, for both.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting pgrudo00:</div><div class="quote_post">AllNet ask anyone from Philly if Coleman is a bum and see what answer you get. This year He still put up 8 and 4 despite being injured, lazy and not listening to the coaching staff. But this deal isn't about adding Coleman, It's about trading away a bigger contract for a smaller one. It's contract for contract. Dumars must expect Delfino to be a sudden impact, I also see Campbell being traded for a decent back-up PG.
Oh yeah, I totally agree w/ you Allnet on that. DC will play his ass off for LB, they had a good relationship together here in Philly. DC isn't the guy you want running to much, if his minutes are limited and the ball is walked into a 1/2 court offense Detroit will be delighted of what he is capable of doing. But we all just really wanted him outta here, he comes to pre-season every year pretty much over weight and outta shape and we don't need that. Detroit can risk that because of their deep squad but not the 76ers.
It's a deal both teams are happy with and each team's fans want the players gone for different reasons. DC will likely play about 10 minutes a game, I don't see him playing that much more. But again all that depends on Dice's heath and how much Darko has or will improve through the course of the season.
Solid pickup by the Pistons, DC will give them a little offense at the 5 spot. And when he is on the floor with Rasheed or Mcdyess, he can drag bigbodies out to the perimeter with his shooting range which will create more opportunities for Rasheed & Mcdyess to operate in the post area. DC health as usual will be the main concern, If DC misses alot of time then Pistons fans will be calling for the return of Corliss because Corliss was always healthy as a Piston and coulld at least be counted on to be in the Pistons every game rotation. DC will not play 82 games that is pretty much a given. But if he can stay somewhat Healthy and play about 70 games, then I think this is a major plus for the Pistons already deep frontline.

But the guy is old and worn out. Good luck.
Iteresting trade, Coleman and Campbell to back up Wallace. I don't see enough minutes to go around. One will get shafted with little or no playing time. But who backs up at prince at sf?

But always post up the numbers that you need coming of the bench. He was great in the beginning of his career to me he go frustrated and got fat and lazy like shawn kemp. I liked him when he was with the Nets.
Coleman, well lately at least, he become the type of player where if he feels like playing, he'll play. Or else, your screwed.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting That NBA Girl:</div><div class="quote_post">Coleman, well lately at least, he become the type of player where if he feels like playing, he'll play. I doubt It will come to that though, I'm sure Coleman will realise he is in a better situation in terms of management and limited minutes. DC is not going to make or break the Pistons season.
Horrible trade. You gave away instant offense for an overweight aging player. True that corliss's huge contract is gone but i feel we could have got more for him. The whole thing about the pistons is they play as a team. Trading away one of the longest tenued pistons could cause players to think no ones safe, causing them to play selfish and try to be a star. As a piston fan i hate and see big nasty go. But i learned not to question joe d. I see them repeating still but i would wonder why joe d wouldn't keep the same team.

He wouldnt be able to switch back and forth between PF & SF like before. And with Corliss Williamson now being limited to the role of just Small forward, he would become a defensive liablity due to the fact he is to slow to guard Small Forwards on a regular basis out on the perimeter. When you could switch him back & forth between the 2 positions then you could adjust by the possible given matchups but they wouldnt be able to do that anymore with Mcdyess & Rasheed playing a bulk of the PF minutes. Anyway if the rumors are true and DC will be waived then this was clearly a move to cut cost more than anything else.

McCaskill (better known as Mc-No-Skill here in Philly) and DC are duds. I'm really suprised, even with the contract thing, that Detroit would want to make this move.
All about cap room, people need to realise Tayshaun Prince and Ben Wallace are free-agents over the next two summers. If Dumars had kept Corliss he wouldn't of been able to afford both. Now a quick question If you had to choose between keeping a big contract for this year (Corliss) and keep the bench the same or get rid of the huge contract even If you get nothing back, helps you re-sign big Ben and Tay...which option would you go for? A no brainer to me. Williamson will be getting paid 18 million over the next 3 years, way too much for an 8th/9th man..
Here you guys go: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Coleman had a close, personal relationship with coach Larry Brown during their time together with the Sixers; Brown made it a point to mention that one of his first congratulatory calls after winning the title last spring came from Coleman. But sources close to the Pistons indicated that Coleman would be waived or included in a future trade, and that McCaskill has no future with Detroit.</div>
