<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">With Shaquille O'Neal rumbling back into the NBA's Eastern Conference, free-agent center Erick Dampier believes he could be the Knicks' ticket to derail The Diesel. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, in 17 career games against Dampier, O'Neal has shot 58.4 percent from the field and averaged 25.1 points and 11.5 rebounds while Dampier has shot 39.8 percent with 7.8 points and 7.1 rebounds.</div>link
Dampier is the one guy who can somewhat contend Shaq and has proved It over the years, I remember him having a 20 and 20 game against Shaq this year.
Just going by thoses stats shows that Shaq can easily dominate DAmpier. Its not different. THe only person who can really "contain" Shaq is Big Ben really and even he cant really do it but hes the closest to doing it. Everyone acts like Dampiers an elite center or something but hes not. An above average center IMO.
I would say a center who can put up 12 and 12 while playing good defense is more than just a above average center. If he keeps his play up then he will be considered a top 4-5 center. I just hope for the sake of the team that gets him he doesn't go back into his old inconsistant ways.
One name: Karl Malone. I want to know if anyone got to see last year's Laker scrimmages...for those who live in Cali. I don't know if they show them on TV or what...but on ESPN, they did show a minute or two of the scrimmages they had. For what they were showing, Karl Malone was really making Shaq work for his buckets. I was shocked...he was throwing his body into the Mailman and not getting anywhere. Then, Stuart Scott commented on the Mailman being one of the only few that can hold his own against the big fella. At his age, you wouldn't think he could stay standing when Shaq throws his frame into him, but he was looking pretty impressive on the defensive end. My thoughts on Dampier? I think he'll eventually be able to hold off a Shaq onslaught, probably by the end of his career...if Shaq plays for another 20 years
Dampier should of taken those words back. They will only increase the chances of Shaq bulldozing him and that may apply to a Knicks versus Heat game in the playoffs. Imagine a fight between Shaq and Dampier. That would make the rivalry between the Heat and Knicks even greater considering the past (Mourning's team versus Ewing's team).
lol Dampier cant really hold anybody...and yeah, 25 ppg/12 rpg is reeeeally holding Shaq...I kinda feel bad for whoever signs him just cuz they were suckered into thinking he was good just because he had a nice year...in his CONTRACT year...
IMO the only person who could take Shaq was Dennis Rodman... he played those mind games on him and got him all worked up and stuff... Since Shaq isn't the smartest person it worked... and the Worm knew waht to do.
No one can handle Shaq you can only contain him and hearing this come out of Eric's mouth is a f'in joke. He never handle him in GS what makes him think he can do it now? Pretty funny.
Shaq is not inhuman. A younger more athletic and more active Shaq was completely shutdown by the 6'9 Dennis Rodman and this Shaq is alot less (physically anyway) than the earlier version. Shaq depends alot on intimidation to do his work for him because if an opposing player is intimidated then Shaq's work his half done. When you have someone who isn't afraid of Shaq and who isn't afraid to get in his face and get physical(Malone,Rodman,Pat Ewing) then Shaq has alot more trouble and gets taken out of his gameplan. For an example look at the times Yao has played him straight up,Shaq has had problems. There is a kryptonite for Shaq its just a matter of finding someone willing to do the dirty work.
This isnt nba live. Yeah, holding shaq to 60% shooting is really containing him. I dont really like shaq, but dampier will eat his words.
Thats a joke, heh just makes the knicks/Heat games more interesting (if Dampier does get traded to NY).

I did mention Ewing in there but that was only because he played Shaq very very aggressively like Malone and Rodman. If a guy as strong as Dampier is aggressive, unintimidated and fundamentally sound on defense then Shaq isn't going to just have his way at will. Like I said Shaq is alot like the younger Mike Tyson. Both rely heavily on intimidation to do half of the work before they even set foot in their arenas of play when you take that away itr gives the opposition an edge. The last example of this IMO would be Deke in the Sixers/LA Finals..although age had caught up with Deke, and he wasn't near the player he had been,he still did an admirable job in a couple of the games.

Erick Dampier is going to shut down Shaq? Yeah right, I'll believe that one when I see it. It sounds like someone is getting a big head now that there are a couple teams dying to get him this off-season.
Ya Malone is one of the only ones to even be able to contain him. Malone isnt one of those pansies afarid to get in front of Shaq. Malone is also very strong. Rodman was arguable the best defender ever along with Bill Russell. So Rodman containning Shaq isnt a surprise. In 1995 Shaq was in his 3rd year in the NBA. HAkeem was in his prime. If it was a 2000 Shaq then Shaq wouldve whooped on Hakeem. I guarantee he will get The diesel even angrier or as heatfan said add fuel to the diesel . Dampier will ea his words.... Dampier isnt a top 5 center either as All Net said 1. Shaq 2. Yao 3. Big Ben 4. Brad Miller 5. Jamal Magloire Those are all better than Damp and I bet Dampier wil not have a better year than this past one. Last year will probably be his best year he ever had.
