This is TERRIBLE news for Knicks fan everywhere.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Erick Dampier may be willing to take the Knicks' $4.9 million mid-level exception ... but is it already gone?

Vin Baker's agent, Aaron Goodwin, told ESPN Insider Chad Ford on Thursday that Baker already has agreed to a multiyear contract with the Knicks that starts at $3.5 million -- eating most of New York's mid-level exception.

"Vin is done," Goodwin told Ford. "The [Knicks] mid-level is gone. ... Vin [contract] starts at $3.5 [million], which negates Dampier for mid-level."

While there had been previous rumblings about the Knicks' interest in re-signing Baker, talk of the team using part of its larger exception to get him comes as a surprise. There had been previous suggestions that Baker might take the Knicks $1.6 million veteran's exception instead. Thursday's The Journal News (Westchester/Putnam counties, NY) reported that a source confirmed that the Knicks had used the smaller exception to keep Baker for this season, with a team option for a second year. </div>

    A very sad link

I would rather have a healthy sober Baker over Dampier. Sure, you lose out on a couple of boards a game, but Vinny can put the ball in the basket. He has great low post skills, and makes it easier for the Knicks new backcourt duo.

I'm pretty sure the only way that Vin Baker gets a piece of the mid-level exception is if Isiah is sure that Dampier won't take the mid-level exception. Remember guys alot of players have talked about taking a pay cut to come to new york just to generate more money somewhere else (like Grant Hill, Brian Grant). It could be that Isiah knows that Dampier is just talking smack about coming to new york for only the mid-level and needs to lock up Baker before he is left with nothing.

Yeah I too would prefer a healthy and sober Baker over Dampier anyday...People fail to recognize that Dampier is a career underachiever and has ONE good year...in a CONTRACT year...Baker is more consistent offensively and is more of a threat than Eric...

this really doesnt make sense to me Dampier WANTED to come to NY.... was Dampier willing to accept a mid level exception?

if so then WHY sign up Baker... please help me out... what is it that Baker does again?... better yet what does he do that makes him more attractive than Dampier?

Now from what I recall Dampier puts 12pts 12rebs, and a strong presence down low...

Ok I wanna see some opinions on this... Could a New York team:

    - with Dampier beat the Pacers?
    - without Dampier beat the Pacers who also dont have Dampier?
    - without Dampier beat the Pacers with Dampier?

^ I think the answers may be abit obvious but just answer yes or no to those... I really think Dampier is vital for the Knicks to go anywhere close to the 2nd / 3rd round of the playoffs.

    Baker Re-signing May Ko Dampier

Baker Re-Signing Could Mean No Dampier

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">If Vin Baker re-signs this week as one source says will occur, it will eliminate the Knicks' longshot hope of having center Erick Dampier sign for the $4.9 million mid-level exception. Yes, one is related to the other, and that's been cause for the delay.

Once Baker signs for more than half of the mid-level, the Knicks could still get Dampier via a sign-and-trade with Golden State. However, the Warriors have rejected the latest Knicks' offers, and Isiah Thomas knows how difficult pulling off one summer sign-and-trade is ? let alone two.

Even though agent Aaron Goodwin is on vacation this week, a source close to Baker said, "I do believe he'll be signed this week, and it even could be [today]."

Goodwin predicted Baker's signing two weeks ago, and a source close to Thomas thought it would occur early last week. But when Dampier visited New York last Wednesday, claiming to be considering the Knicks' mid-level, Thomas paused. But it appears Dampier's remark was a strategic ploy to bump Atlanta's standing offer of $8M per and motivate the Warriors to deal.</div>

Vin Baker has not officially resigned yet.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">While Thomas keeps his fingers crossed on Dampier, the Knicks are almost certain to re-sign Vin Baker this week. The two sides have had an agreement for the last several weeks, with the backup forward expected to get a two-year deal worth slightly more than $3.2 million. Baker's agent, Aaron Goodwin, said yesterday that Baker and the Knicks should make it formal tomorrow or Wednesday, regardless of what happens with Dampier. Only Cleveland has shown interest in Baker during the offseason. </div>

Erick Dampier may be willing to take the Knicks' $4.9 million mid-level exception ... but is it already gone?

Vin Baker's agent, Aaron Goodwin, told ESPN Insider Chad Ford on Thursday that Baker already has agreed to a multiyear contract with the Knicks that starts at $3.5 million -- eating most of New York's mid-level exception.

"Vin is done," Goodwin told Ford. "The [Knicks] mid-level is gone. ... Vin [contract] starts at $3.5 [million], which negates Dampier for mid-level."

You honestly think the knicks are stupid enough to offer there mid level excemption or most of it to baker before they know if Dampier is willing to sign for it? I think the Baker deal will only happen if Dampier doesnt sign. If he does the deal will be amended into a roughly vetern minimum or 2 million dollar contract over the next couple of years.

The baker deal will not be finalized until this is certain. notice the silent language. They are almost certain Baker will resign. Then they are almost positive that baker will go to the hawks. The key word being almost its a chain reaction everyone of the things depnds on one another to give us the final result.
