After the Jamal Crawford trade, the Bulls are rumored to have offered Mutombo to the Rockets for Eric Piatkowski (see Chicago Tribune). Deal makes sense for both teams, as the Rockets are overloaded at SG/SF and need a backup C. The Bulls need a full-time shooting guard and don't need Mutombo taking minutes from Curry and Chandler. I doubt he'd want to play for a lottery team anyways.

That would be a good trade for us. Pike isn't going to get any minutes next season anyways, and Mutombo is a backup center we could use to spell Yao and give him a rest. Also, we could play him at power forward and have a frontline of two seven-footers and excellent shot-blockers. If Adrian Griffin returns healthy and Nachbar covers for the loss of three-point shooting off the bench in Piatkowski, we'd win big in the deal.

wow although Piatkowski is my favorite Rocket I would love to see this deal happen...Mutombo would be a great complement to Yao and provides the rebounding and defense we desperately need at the backup spot...this makes perfect sense but I'm not holding my breath just yet...

This would definitely be a god trade for us and Mutombo as a backup for Yao would mean that we have a good defensive stopper. I hope this trade will go through...

I dont know about this deal, its very risky.Mutombo could have an ok impact and get a few blocks and rebounds or he can just get injured like he usally does.

Mutumbo cannot be traded again until the 15th of December and salaries don't work

I persoanlly think if houston gets mutombo they would need one more center to back mutombo up because i dont know how many minutes he can stand i mean with yao getting tired so quick mutombo might be needed alot.

Though i know mutombeo played minutes in New York hes a year older now but the good thing shaq is in the east now so if this trade goes down he could be legitimate in the west.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting iceman:</div><div class="quote_post">Houston dont need Mutombo IMO</div>Care to explain? As of now, the Rockets have Clarence Weatherspoon as the only backup to Yao at center. Doesn't that call for desperate help at the 5? Yao's stamina is not very refined yet, and someone needs to back him up for 15-20 minutes each game.

This actually wouldn't be a bad move for the Rockets.

JVG made it pretty clear last season that Piatkowski is not a favorite of his so getting rid of him actually wouldn't be a half bad idea. This would also free up playing time for Adrian Griffin and Bostjan Nachbar who are both better players than Piatkowski. Piatkowski never really had the defensive mentality that JVG strives for in his players.

Bringing in someone like Mutumbo would help provide some insurance for us at the center position because right now if Yao is not in the game our tallest player is 6-9(Howard and Taylor).

Just thought I would add that Mutumbo's contract comes off the books after this season.

It would be a GREAT move. Piatkowski is not gonna get any minutes next season as trip said, so with mutombo we could get someone backing Yao up. Weatherspoon hasnt shown enough las season, so yeah. So we could have someone else tall that could block when yao is down.

    correction

read Mark Cuban's blog about NBA Rules regarding trades and salaries, etc..

    http://www.blogmaverick.com/entry/1758766008819633/

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">If you acquire a player in a trade, you may trade that player straight up for another player immediately. If you wish to package that player with another and make a trade, you must wait 60 days.</div>

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">If a team signs a free agent or a rookie, that player cannot be traded till the 15th of December</div>

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">In trades, if the teams exchanging players are over the cap (and the Mavs are), then current year salaries exchanged must be within 15pct plus 100k dollars of each other. So if the Mavs trade a player who makes 1mm per year, we can take a player, or players, whose total salaries in the current year equal $1.25mm. That breaks down as 1mm plus 15pct of 1mm plus 100k. Rights to players or draft picks who are unsigned do not add any monetary consideration to the totals.</div>

I don't think the Rockets are over the cap. They still have the trade exception from the Glen Rice deal giving them 6 million in cap relief, so conceivably this could happen.

i agree, but shouldnt the Rockets organization have known that about Pike before the signed him? I dont think it would be a bad idea to give him one more year but I'm still in favor of this deal if its in serious talks...

Yes I would say this trade makes sense for both teams.

We signed three small forwards: Pike, Griffin and Jim Jackson within two months, hoping that the three could battle it out for the starting spot. Now it seems that PIatkowski is the odd man out, so he'll have to go.

I'm OK with Weatherspoon as a 3rd string center...the man gives all-out effort and hustles, but i dont see any need for him really...Yao will play 35 minutes a game, and Mutombo can atleast give us a solid 13...
