"Big Nasty" Meets the Philly Press Getting to Know Corliss Williamson How did you get your nick name "The Big Nasty"? I got the nickname when I was 13 playing AAU basketball. A cousin of mine was the coach, and basically it was the way he wanted me to play on the court. He wanted me to be big and nasty. So, he started calling me that and it followed me on. You seem to be very involved in the community during your career, ?Legends in the Rock?, a $1 million pledge for the Boys and Girls Club, $3 million challenge for a new community facility, what community activities are you involved with now? The Legends in the Rock is an event I have had for the past three years. It started off with charity basketball games the first two years along with a basketball camp. This year, we had a golf tournament and we still had the basketball camp. What we do is raise money, some of it goes towards the Boys and Girls Club for the pledge I made for them and others goes towards some other charities around the state of Arkansas and Little Rock, to help kids, like the Arkansas Children?s Hospital and some other charities. You have a wife, Michelle and two kids, Chasen (9) and Creed (1). Where do you live and what do you do in the off season? We live in Little Rock. The offseason is really a time where we get to spend together. I take my son to the gym all the time. He likes basketball, so I enjoy working him out. Go fishing. Spend a lot of time together doing stuff. His favorite player is Allen Iverson. He?s really excited about this. Talk about your experiences last year with the Pistons. What were your feelings after winning the championship? I?ve been in the league nine years. Seeing all from my start to up until now has been amazing. To see how many things can happen within a nine year period in the NBA and being traded, going through bad seasons, good seasons. Winning a championship- that?s what you play for. That?s what everyone?s in this league is for. To be able to call yourself, the best in the world, it?s a wonderful accomplishment and truly blessed. What would you consider to be your best NBA season personally? Personally, it was my third year in Sacramento. From an individual stand point as far as points, rebounds, assists I think that was my best year individually but it?s not about that. Were you surprised by the trade to the 76ers? I kind of suspected something would happen. If you look at the way our team is built, some of the guys who were coming up as free agents, something had to give. You expect something to happen, but when it does happen you are always caught off guard and surprised by it. But it?s a business, you?ve got to move on. What do you know about this Philadelphia team? It?s sure to be different than in the past six years with the new coach and new philosophy? As for the coach, I played against him when he was in Boston. I kind of know he has a defensive philosophy that all of his team?s follow, which is something good. Once you get it down, it?s gonna help. Seems like he lets you get up there and play ball. Guys get to shoot and as long as you are out there playing defense, he is going to leave you out there on the floor and let you do what you can on the offensive end. As far as the players and this team, everybody knows Allen Iverson. I?ve played against Glenn Robinson and some of the other guys for a while. I am just looking forward to coming here and helping. I think this team has some great guys, some good guys. Hopefully I can bring something positive. How would you describe yourself as a player? A guy who is going to work hard. That?s the reason I?ve been able to make it in this league, and stay in for a while. I am going to give it all I have. Playing defense, I am going to try my best there. If it?s something on the offensive end I am going to give it all I?ve got. Just look for me to be a hard worker. Would you say that the NCAA championship in 1994 is your favorite college basketball memory? Looking back, yeah. Winning a championship, was one of the greatest things that ever could have happened. Being from the state of Arkansas and being the first team for Arkansas to win a National Championship that was a great accomplishment. I still reminisce about those days. Were you surprised how things turned out at Arkansas with your former coach Nolan Richardson? I was shocked and very disappointed with the way things were handled. It seems like things could have been handled in a different manner. Once you get emotions and egos involved, a lot of things could happen. Hopefully they can find a way to put it behind them and move forward. Coach Richardson had some great years there. I think he should be recognized for that. Hopefully, one day a lot of people will be able to forgive him and forgive the situation that happened. What do you like to do in your down time? Favorite activities? In my down time, I am pretty much on the computer playing games, surfing the net, making CDs, talking to my friends. I just love computers now. At first it was a Playstation phase, then X-Box, now the computer. My wife gets on me for being on it too much. You do visit Sixers.com, don?t you? I did last night. Lastly, what was with the shower cap you wore in TV interview? It was actually a dare. Dana Barros and someone else. I had a twist in my hair at the time. So when I came out of the shower, I had the cap on. They were laughing. I said, ?what are you laughing at, I?ll do an interview like this?. They said, ?no you won?t.? It was after a game with Toronto during the playoffs. I caught a lot of hell for that when I got home.
Did anyone see the Press Conference today with CW? JO said he's not even sure if we'll have a "center" this season or have all different guys play the spot.
