Now I have no idea what the Lakers are going to do next. Are they trying to make a run for a good PG, or are they going to give Vujacic alot of playing time, or what? Mihm better be pulling down boards if he's going to be a Laker.
I think this is a great trade for the Lakers, getting some key youth pieces in Mihm and Banks, plus a draft pick...
Man,what a huge deal for the Celtics, this was a very good trade for them and some might say its a steal. They get a good PG who can lead a team and thats what they have really lacked the last few seasons and Gary Payton might be their missing piece,he gives them a floor leader and thats what they really need. I dont think Payton will have a huge impact but I think he will play better for the Celtics then he did with the Lakers now that he is not running a triangle offense. This trade deffiantly makes the Celtics a contender in the East.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting samoan-maverick:</div><div class="quote_post">Rick Fox still plays basketball???</div> so the rumors say..... I have been tryin to find something about Fox saying he was going to retire if traded so far all I can find is that he has never said that he would either play or retire for the upcoming season.
I totally agree with Tripl3 the celtics got a steal with Banks they might have a next great point guard.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Friday, August 6, 2004 ESPN.com news services BOSTON -- The rebuilding Lakers, in need of a big man since trading Shaquille O'Neal to Miami, had to give up Gary Payton to get one. Dr. Jack analysis: Mihm has potential Rucinsky This deal might work out well for the Celtics with Gary Payton and Rick Fox coming to Boston, and the Lakers could also get something from this trade. Marcus Banks is potentially a good, young point guard while Chucky Atkins is a good backup, and those two should blend well with the talent the Lakers have already accumulated this offseason (Caron Butler, Vlade Divac, Brian Grant, Lamar Odom). Chris Mihm has yet to show he can be a force in the NBA, but he teased Cleveland and Boston with his potential. Mihm is a shot blocker who can play the four or five position, and if he ever unleashes his game fully he will be a good fit in Los Angeles because of the Lakers' shortness of big men. -- Dr. Jack Ramsey Los Angeles resumed its makeover Friday by trading Payton and Rick Fox to the Boston Celtics for Chris Mihm, Chucky Atkins and Marcus Banks. The Celtics also received a conditional first-round draft pick and cash in the deal and sent a second-round pick to the Western Conference champions.</div> Link
Lakers got the best out of this trade thats for sure, Chris Mihm and Marcus Banks are potentially good young players. Chris Mihm can be another backup center too..
I agree with Nuggets. I think the lakers got the better end of this deal. I think Mihm and Banks have potential.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Flames:</div><div class="quote_post">WHY IN THE HECK DID THEY DO THIS!?!?!?Im friggin beginning to believe that G-Payton will never get his ring.</div> Ya think?
<font color="DarkRed">***Threads Moved/Merged***</font> Nuggets15, in the future please post links to your articles. Anyway, I feel like the trade was a bad trade for both teams. It seemed like the Celtics were set for the next season. They would be in a weak conference and a weak division that would pretty much hand them a playoff spot. Why they needed to get aging veterans with big salaries is beyond me. I don't understand the trade from the Laker's perspective any better. The Lakers seemed set to make a run at the playoffs, and this does not improve them at all. Mihm is really nice to have, but they could have done with Divac and resigning Slava. Now they don't have a solid point guard. Atkins is a good player, but he's not someone who you want to start for a playoff contender. Banks is good, but I'd wait two or three years before giving him that much control of my team. How I'd rate this trade: Lakers: 7/10 Celtics: 4/10 :thumbsdow
Fox and Payton's salaries will come off the books next year. They might be able to buy Fox out before then. if Payton doesn't sulk, he'll do better this year than he did last year. He's been working out with Paul Pierce (according to ESPN) in Las Vegas and the two are getting along well. GP might help the Celtics give someone a scare in the 1st round. Meanwhile, again according to ESPN, Mihm and Banks are expendable because the rookies West (PG) and Jefferson (PF) are looking great and are ready to play--opinions that ESPN attributed to the Celtic coaching staff. Atkins is a free agent. A good deal for the Celtics. Meanwhile, Mihm has had a few seasons to develop and hasn't. Banks is a question mark.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Didnt I hear a while back that Fox said if he were traded he would retire?</div> We can only hope, because he's not going to get a warm reception in Boston. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">It seemed like the Celtics were set for the next season.</div> They weren't. However, this move is risky, but only short term risky. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">This looks like a steal for the Celtics.</div> Wouldn't make that call just yet. If Banks or Mihm end up becoming players then we might have made another move that mortgages our future. However, with 12 mill coming off the books..... I'm Glad this happened now though, that way it gives GP time to get that triangle offense out of his head. I think our style of offense much better suits GP. Question is, did we get the goods or did we get an old, slow GP?
you guys are looing at this all wrong. This is a great move for the celtics. So Payton is on his last legs. and rick fox doesnt even have legs anymore. so WHAT??? they didnt DO this trade for this year. the bottom line is that after this year, Payton comes off the books, so does fox, so does stuart. the celtics have only about 4 roster spots that are gaurenteed to be filled next year. that adds up to roughly 16 MILLION dollars freed up. thats why danny ainge made this trade (and getting a name like gary payton will sell tickets). as for the lakers. i dont know what they were thinking. Atkins is a decent point guard to be sure. but I spent a whole year waiting for marcus banks to stop making the same mistakes over and over again but he never did. he has potential like kedrick brown had potential. kedrick could jump out of the building and banks can run circles aruond anybody but he has TERRIBLE instincts. hes a shoot-first point guard who will always make more turnovers than assists. chriss mihm isnt much of a different story. he always showed flashes of brilliance but was about half as consistant as raef lafreanz and dat aint good.
I was suprised that the Lakers traded Payton.I figured he was a BIG Part of their plans with Rudy T.But hey mihm is back with the Lakers,so maybe he can be of some Help..I just suprised that this Trade happened??
