With the Lakers recieving 1st round draft pick from the Miami Heat. I know the 1st round draft isn't the actual 1st round overall, just the 1 round draft the Heat is positioned to recieve. So if the Heat is position 10th overall, the first pick they choose will go to the Lakers? or But when will the Lakers be able to use this pick? Will the Heat be choosing the player or will the Lakers be able to choose the player they want? If the Heat chooses the player, can the Lakers decline the player and wait for a future draft they like? How does this Draft system work? I am so confused with these trades going on. I hope this makes sense, please help.
somebody should write an article on how all the techincal details of the free agency, trades, salary caps, drafts, etc. work, put it in layman terms and make it stick.
KB8remix had the right answer. When you trade a draft pick, you trade all of the rights tied to that pick - the right to select the player, the exlusive right to sign that player for 2 years, and the right to negotiate terms with that player, and the former team's slot, determined by either the lottery or by their overall standings. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting heatfan83:</div><div class="quote_post">somebody should write an article on how all the techincal details of the free agency, trades, salary caps, drafts, etc. work, put it in layman terms and make it stick.</div> That would be some super long article. I can explain it, but even in simple terms, it would be difficult to explain, becuase there are so many exceptions to every rule. Not only that, but after this year it'd be changed because the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) will likely undergo several changes after it expires next year. I wrote an article about the salary cap that's undergoing editing right now, and it came out rather long. One resource that you might want to plod through in the meantime is Larry Coon's FAQ. The guy is an expert, although unfortunately he has little time, and thus doesn't post here. I've shot him an e-mail once or twice, though, and he does respond, but most of the info you'll ever need is actually in that FAQ somewhere, so I try not to waste his time.
It would be retarded to let another choose a person for yuo it would be like the Mitch picking douthit for the Magic for their number one pick
