Best Sport City: Boston <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Taking into account not only the sheer quantity of courses in its year-round sports feast and the depth and breadth of fan fervor (OK, and often angst), but also the quality of the teams in the sports we cover, Boston is our Best Sports City for 2004. Like the area's NFL franchise, Boston wins it all for the second time in three years, which could serve as salve or salt to the wounds of Red Sox fans, who are seeking their second title in 86 years. </div> Thoughts? Can't say I disagree, but then again, I'm biased.
Oh nice.. my top 5 city is 1) New York (i don't pick that city cuz i'm New YOrker.. Look at NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS and NHL).. tied 2) Los Angeles and Boston 4) Houston 5) Minnesota
^^^ It's kinda sad that you posted, just to drop that turd. I assume your glib comment stems from this: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">but distracted from a Celtics team that, honestly, was more "This Old Franchise" rehab project than legit playoff participant.</div> That comment, which while on-point, is largely misleading. The Celtics are still wildly popular, despite them not being Champions since '86. If you don't believe me, check out who's been at or near the top of jersey sales for the past 2-3 years: Paul Pierce. Yes, we don't always sell out the Fleet every night, like we did the Gahhden. However, Bostons not exactly near the bottom of the league in attendance figures either. By my count, we're just about dead on the league average attendance figure and there are at least 14 other teams in the league with worse attendance numbers. The difference between Boston fans and other teams fans is that we largely remain loyal in the lean years, when lesser fanbases wain and lose thier bandwagoners. Do we agree on everything: Hell no. But.....We love to argue/debate and just plain talk about the Celtics, on damn near any topic that's relevant (and some that aren't) There are few fanbases in the NBA that are even in the neighborhood of Celtics fans when you look at the attributes of Knoweldge of the game, overall intelligence about basketball, and devotion to thier team, in good times AND in bad. I think that to name a couple of the short list, there'd be Golden State fans, most Sacto fans, Utah, Blazers and Knick fans. That's it, IMO. That's not necessarily a negative comment towards other teams, it's just that those fanbases set themselves apart from others in the listed attributes. The Celtics may not be the front runners in the press in Boston right now, but they're not the neglected and forgotten step-child, either.
I don't see how LA is in there, don't even have a football team. I would go with Boston, NY, Philadelphia (i'm biased), Dallas, and then LA
I don't think any other city should be ahead of Boston on this list. NY has the top baseball team, an average baseball team, an average basketball team, two average hockey teams, and two football teams that play in a different state, and didn't show much last season, though if Chad was healthy they would have been at least .500. Anyway off the NYC topic, Boston deserves this because of the unity and loyalty as hagrid said. There's only one team per sport and everyone is a fan of each team. I remember in October when the Sox were playing Oakland in the first round ona Sunday at the same time as the Patriots playing the Titans(I did a lot of channel changing that day). The Patriots had just made what looked to be an INT, but it got called back for pass interference, but for some reason everyone in the stadium was cheering. The Red Sox had just taken the lead onm a David Ortiz double, first time I'd ever seen football fans cheer after a pass interference call. Boston fans are loyal and for the most part know their stuff, but they're also cocky and most people dislike them because of it. The Celtics may not have made the biggest impact, but their tradition and huge fan base help make Boston a great sports city.
the celtics are weak, the red sox havent won since the stone age, bruins havent won since like '72, and only the patriots have won 2 SB recently.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting saad:</div><div class="quote_post">the celtics are weak, the red sox havent won since the stone age, bruins havent won since like '72, and only the patriots have won 2 SB recently.</div>which is weird because that is exactly what they based it on
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">the celtics are weak, the red sox havent won since the stone age, bruins havent won since like '72, and only the patriots have won 2 SB recently.</div> That's part of the point I already made: All those teams still have a large and devoted (rabid, some may say) fanbase, despite thier lack of success recently. Simply put: Boston fans adore thier teams. We are also some of the most critical fans in the NBA as well. Alot of Celtic fans are of the fabric that after a 15 point win against a +.500 team, we'd be debating why we didn't win by more, who didn't pull thier share, and who did more than expected. It's just part of the love we have for our teams. This is about the quality of the overall sports environment in this award. If you're a sports fan, it's going to be hard for you to not find some exciting sports action in Boston, at any time of year, surrounded by some of the finest tradition. Remember that the Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins are part of the original founding teams in thier respective leagues. There are rivalry games every year with each of those teams that can have the same significance as playoff games. Don't believe me? Go to a Bruins vs Habs game sometime. <font color="DarkRed">(If you want to live dangerously, go to the game wearing the opposite teams jersey of where you're attending at.) </font> You'll get a warm reception whether in Boston or Montreal. I once experience some people sitting in our section in Montreal game, getting thier car flipped over in the lot when Habs fans followed them out of the game after a loss to the Bruins and trashed thier car. I still wear my B's jersey when I go up there <font color="DarkRed">(I'm an Isles fan, but the B's are my second fav and I find it fun to antagonize)</font> Speaking of warm receptions, there's always the Red Sox/Skankees rivalry every summer and fall. Drama so thick you can cut it with a knife. Not to mention that it involes 2 fanbases that for the most part despise(to put it nicely in some cases) each other. Good Stuff. Patriots have always had a rabid fanbase, even when they really sucked. MLS, MLL, and the Boston Marthon added to that, plus all the stuff that I didn't mention. Boston's a great place to experience sports.
Do Boston teams have the most championships put together? Regardless, Patriots are reigning champions, Bruins/Celtics/Red Sox are always contending, and will someday reach the finish line. The fans here are the most devoted of anywhere, i.e. they dont leave games early like i.e. New York fans. The Franchises are storied and it dont get much better than the Garden (well thats gone) and Fenway. Woohooo heres to Bostonia
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting hagrid:</div><div class="quote_post"> Simply put: Boston fans adore thier teams. </div> So basically Boston won this award because their fans are ignorant. No argument there.
^^^^Wow, profound. Considering what you've posted thus far: <font color="DarkRed">You're not qualified to call anyone ignorant</font>. Got anything else to troll with, because so far your stuff is weak. I gave you an easy opening to provide something substantial after your first post and all you do is float another turd. There's a rule on this site that requires you provide Intelligent Conversation. <font color="DarkRed">Thus far in this thread, you haven't even come close.</font> :thumbsdow

What I said was correct, the Celtics had nothing to do with this. The Red Sox are Boston's most popular team, get over it. Boston fans are kinda stupid (and racist, just ask Byron Scott). It really isn't that great a sports town, I can think of a couple others with fans more loyal, and an infinite number with fans more intelligent.
So, why do you guys have the worst team in the NBA? Then you trade Nomar!?! Best Sports city? Maybe according to a Boston newspaper.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">What I said was correct, the Celtics had nothing to do with this. </div> As I already acknowledged, which you failed to, AGAIN, was that the Celtics may not have had a great season, but thier fans were still a part of this award and the Celtics did indeed contribute to this award. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Red Sox are Boston's most popular team, get over it.</div> No one made the contention that they weren't. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Boston fans are kinda stupid (and racist, just ask Byron Scott). It really isn't that great a sports town, I can think of a couple others with fans more loyal, and an infinite number with fans more intelligent.</div> Sure, which is why you've chosen to so adequtely represent the rest of the NBA's great fanbases, right? I'm sure whatever team you root for is one of those with "infinite number of more intelligent fans", right? You've used as an example, the NBA poster boy for racial ignorance in Bryon Scott and then once again insulted the Boston fan base. Yet..... have chosen to not list any of the aformentioned teams/fanbases that are superior in both thier loyalty and intelligence. Would you like to enlighten us with your brilliance or are you just going to continue to insult and spout off? From DrFeelGood: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">So, why do you guys have the worst team in the NBA? Then you trade Nomar!?! Best Sports city? Maybe according to a Boston newspaper.</div> First, had you bothered to read the link, it was from FOX SPORTS, not the Herald or Globe. Yes, we had the worst team in the NBA last year..... So far, it's not the Boston fans that are looking like the "stupid" ones around here. :thumbsdow
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting WhiteManCanJump:</div><div class="quote_post">I don't see how LA is in there, don't even have a football team. I would go with Boston, NY, Philadelphia (i'm biased), Dallas, and then LA</div> LA.. Then why u say Dallas then for? They dont have MLB team...
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">So, why do you guys have the worst team in the NBA? Then you trade Nomar!?! Best Sports city? Maybe according to a Boston newspaper</div>Wow, I can't even believe that somebody can say that and be serious at the same time. Just so you know, the "worst team in the NBA" somehow made the playoffs. Also, what is the point of bringing up the Nomar trade? If you understood the whole situation, than there's no chance you'd be bringing that up. Plus, you make it sound like a player has never been traded in the last year of his contract. A player that has made it obvious he will not be coming back the next season. As Hagrid said, it was not a Boston paper that named Boston the best sports city. Maybe if you actually took the two and a half seconds to click the link, you would have known that. That's a simple task that I'm sure you could have completed before you decided to post your nonsense-filled post. Please, from now on, take the time to familarize yourself with the topic of the thread before you post in it. Like Hagrid said, this site asks for "intelligent conversation" only. Posting things that are not factual, not relevant, and completely and utterly ignorant(all of which you did post) is not exactly "intelligent conversation". Now, in regards to Boston being selected the best sports city, I can't really say much about it since I haven't seen any other city first-hand. The Boston sports community is the only one I have seen and been a part of, so I can't compare it to any other. But, I'm sure that the Bob Hille has a much broader view than I do....being the Executive Editor of The Sporting News and all. Here's the link again, because some people obviously missed it the first time... http://msn.foxsports.com/story/2631542?GT1=4550
The Celtics may not have been the worst team in the NBA, but he is right that they were the worst team to make the playoffs. They needed the lottery pick. Not tanking was Ainge's worst move yet. How is Byron Scott a posterboy for racial ignorance? LOL, Hagrid now you are just digging for things to say. Beantown is overrated. Celtics fans are still bragging that they have more rings than any other team. That was in the past. It's 2004 now . The Celtics haven't been a contender in a loooooooong time.

Scott actually is a pretty good posterboy of racial ignorance, he used an old stereotype and basically said everyone in Boston is racist, though never living there I don't understand how he would know. How is Beantown overrated, nobody has said that Boston is better than everyone else, they have great fans, who are some of the least ignorant in sports, though they get that reputation from a lot of hpeople who hate their diehard nature. Is anyone bragging about the Celtics 16 championships, find a single post on this board where someone is bragging about how many rings the Celtics have won. It seems like you are being ignorant and just throwing out random things trying to knock a great sports city. You keep saying Boston fans are ignorant, Boston is overrated, well back yourself up! To DrFeelGood, what does trading an aging star have to do with this? Players get traded, should LA be considered a horrible sports city because they traded Shaq? To everyone who says Boston isn't the best sports city, name one that's better
