Bobcats send Drobnjak to Hawks for 2005 pick

    August 16, 2004
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Charlotte Bobcats traded center Predrag Drobnjak to the Atlanta Hawks on Monday for a second round pick in the 2005 NBA draft.

The Bobcats agreed to select Drobnjak from the Los Angeles Clippers in the expansion draft as part of the deal for the Clippers' No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft. The Bobcats used that pick to draft Emeka Okafor.

The Bobcats never had an immense interest in Drobnjak, and after sending their 2005 second-round pick to the Clippers in July for Melvin Ely and Eddie House, they were looking to get another draft selection.

This trade allows us to open up a roster spot and also gives us a second round pick next year that we lost last month,'' said general manager Bernie Bickerstaff. ``We had six players at the power forward and center positions and this will relieve some of the logjam and present more minutes for the guys on our roster.''

Drobnjak, a 6-foot-11 forward from Serbia-Montenegro, was drafted by Washington in the second round of the 1997 NBA draft but remained in Yugoslavia.

He spent the first two years of his NBA career with the Seattle SuperSonics before signing with the Clippers in 2003.

Drobnjak is a very good shooter he is a nice pickup for the team. As far as the comment by Deshawnred goes Clark is a guy that would probably demand a lot of money or at least the full MLE. With the team perssuing Swift and/or Dampier offering Clark money at this point would hurt there chances of signing those guys.

Drobnjak has a pretty bad contract though he is a decent player though. I dont think the hawks mind it much because he will probably be involved in a sign and trade deal mabye *shrugs* also they have a lot of money so they dont mind one bad contract. They will have even more money when walker's max deal ends after this season they will of course try to resign him, but will post likely not have to spend much since Walker is saying he is gona love playing in his home town and being a hawk.

How is this bad for the Hawks? They trade a second-rounder for a legit starting center. Yeah, he has a bad contract, but the Hawks have TONS of cap space, they can afford him and much, much more.

yeh but the hawks need to be careful where they spend there money you never know what happens down the line. with stars throwing hissy fits and demanding trades and such.

i'll be looking out for this guy. thugh next year.

also atl seems to be shaping up as a run and gun team. i hope this works out. Especially with us having larry browns brother as our assistant coach. ( defense? )

This could be a white flag in the Dampier sweepstakes.

Agreed. Thats why this could turn out bad for the Hawks, if this leads to not getting Dampier then i'm going to be pissed. I got one question if we get Dampier are we going to trade him for Swift??

You cant trade him for swift after you just signed him can you? Unless something is worked out in a 3 way sign and trade deal or something before had anyway this may mean they are out of the Dampier sweepstakes because now they can only offer him 6.5 million dollars instead of 7.2.

I still think he may sign with them just because it is more than the MLE that starts at 4.9 million he could get from NY. Perhaps he will only sign a one year deal though and try to perssue free agency next year the right way or get more money.

ok...well, i never really got the chance to watch ths drobjnak guy, so i guess pure skillz got me. so much for keon... but what about a point guard? isn't the hawks interested of spending some cash with the likes shammond williams? a run and gun team with a defensve rhythm, now that's more like it for atl.
