Bobcats send Drobnjak to Hawks for 2005 pick

    August 16, 2004
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Charlotte Bobcats traded center Predrag Drobnjak to the Atlanta Hawks on Monday for a second round pick in the 2005 NBA draft.

The Bobcats agreed to select Drobnjak from the Los Angeles Clippers in the expansion draft as part of the deal for the Clippers' No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft. The Bobcats used that pick to draft Emeka Okafor.

The Bobcats never had an immense interest in Drobnjak, and after sending their 2005 second-round pick to the Clippers in July for Melvin Ely and Eddie House, they were looking to get another draft selection.

This trade allows us to open up a roster spot and also gives us a second round pick next year that we lost last month,'' said general manager Bernie Bickerstaff. ``We had six players at the power forward and center positions and this will relieve some of the logjam and present more minutes for the guys on our roster.''

Drobnjak, a 6-foot-11 forward from Serbia-Montenegro, was drafted by Washington in the second round of the 1997 NBA draft but remained in Yugoslavia.

He spent the first two years of his NBA career with the Seattle SuperSonics before signing with the Clippers in 2003.

I knew this would happen sooner or later after the Bobcats had their expansion draft. This is a good trade, Charlotte gets their 2005 second-round pick back and this trade opens up more playing time for some of their younger players like Primoz Brezec and Jamal Sampson.

The pick should be pretty high in the second round too.

Another bad move for the cats imo. The pick wont be that high in the second round since the hawks have improved greatly it will probably be late 40's and you are not gona find a very good scorer there it is a long shot you may find a RJ, Arenas, or mobely every once in a while though.

The hawks have gotten a pretty good team together and have not given up much this trade was mostly a trade to clear cap room for the team idk why though since they already have so much of it. I have heard there owner is like Sterling cheap as hell. Can you say "Clippers of the East" hopefully they use this cap wisely though and dont become a team who's owner is just in it for $$$.

How is this a bad trade? The Bobcats were loaded in the frontcourt. It wasn't a pick just to clear cap room. Like Drobnjak, Brezec is also a good jump shooter. He put up some impressive numbers in the summer league so the Bobcats knew they could give up Drobnjak, who they were not highly interested in to begin with. Even though it's only summer league, Brezec put up better numbers than many other players.

Besides, Atlanta is improved but not THAT much improved. They don't have a legit center, and their depth doesn't exactly impress. I'm thinking this second-round pick will be in the late 30s or possibly early 40s.

Not a bad trade for either team.

They got former all star Antoine Walker, most improved player canidate harrington, josh smith and co., and possibly dampier. This was a bad trade because summer league and the regular season are totally different.

John Salmons dominates the summer leagues every year yet he has still not shown or lived up to his potential yet. Then frank williams dominates the summer leagues as well yet he is no super star. Also Loren Woods goes big in summer league games yet he is not even on a roster does games dont mean anything since no superstars are playing just players who are tring to get use to the team offense or make a team roster.

Look, I know the summer league and regular season are totally different. But how well he performed in the summer league showed the Bobcats that he can play. Brezec won't be scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the regular season, but he will have his nights. Don't tell me Drobnjak was going to get 20 and 10. He just needed to go. This trade doesn't hurt the Bobcats at all.

Only if Atlanta gets Dampier will I acknowledge them as a legit team in the East. Right now, they are a team who could finish in the 9th or 10th seed.

Going back to what you said about the owner being Donald Sterling of the East, I don't think this is Bob Johnson's doing. It's part of Bickerstaff's philosophy of wanting young, inexpensive gym rats. Drobnjak doesn't fit that description. The Bobcats were never interested in him to begin with, as they only acquired him so they could get the No. 2 pick in the draft.

I think Drobnjak is a better player than a 40th pick or so, but whatever.

Drobnjak was selected 49th back in the 1997 draft. Why do you people think talent cannot be found in the 2nd round?
