this really isnt as big as a deal as most of you think. Dampier was pretty much nothing until last year, and he was only good because it was his contract year. He only averaged double figures in scoring twice, 11.8 in 97-98, and 12.3 in 03-04. i think both were his contract years. (i know 03-04 was). also, he only averaged double figures in rebounding ONCE, which was this year, his contract year. He only performed well during 03-04 because he wanted to be offered a good amount of money. IMO, hes gonna go back to his 5RPG, 7PPG self once this season starts. Dampier is definitely a step in the right direction for Dallas. He gives them a proven, true big man they've desired for so long. He wont be the answer to all their probelms, defense will still be an issue for Dallas. But come playoff time, he will be a key part of the Mavs.
Good pick up but we also lost some toughness in Najera, oh well at least we got at half decent center
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting samoan-maverick:</div><div class="quote_post"> we are still expecting to trade Stackhouse for Kurt Thomas.........yes.</div> Where the hell did you get that kind of rumor?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting samoan-maverick:</div><div class="quote_post">Along with Marquis Daniels, Devin Harris, Josh Howard and we are still expecting to trade Stackhouse for Kurt Thomas.........yes.</div> That was a really bad answer. Anyways, THis isn't a major move. But, Dallas got the upper end of the deal.
Wow, I never saw this coming. With all the talks about Atlanta and New York, I would have never guessed that Dallas would eventually be the ones to get his services. It was a great trade for the Mavericks, although they got back their own disappointment, Evan Eschmeyer, who was signed to a huge contract and dealt to Golden State last summer in the Van Exel trade. Dampier will provide the Mavericks with rebounding, shotblocking and some low-post scoring. With the added size, the Mavericks could field a terrifying frontline of Bradley, Dampier and Nowitzki, which would help them lots in the reformed West where size could propel you into the top echelon in the West.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Rudeezy:</div><div class="quote_post">Is Dampier expected to change the worse defensive team into a title contender?</div> Yup! Not just this one move, but the Mavs have reworked their roster in the offseason and will be a much better defensive team. The players that have left are horrible defenders (except Najera) and the guys we have brought in will get the job done. I don't like the depth at power forward, perhaps Booth/Bradley or one of the guys in the 1-2-3 spots (Howard/Stackhouse) will be traded for another banger/rebounder to backup Dirk. (I hope it isn't Kurt Thomas, we need a young guy to fit in with a very young lineup). I think right now, the Mavs have upgraded their team and will finish in the top three in the West with 60 wins! Hey, don't forget, with the firepower left to acquire more players (since we gave up very little for Dampier) the Mavs starting lineup next year could be the following (If Cuban chooses): Jason Kidd Marquis Daniels Vince Carter Dirk Eric Dampier That would be sweet, but even if Cuban chooses the youth route it will be a great team to watch.
I have a lot of questions as to how Damp is going fit into Nelly's system. Damp is really good in the half court game, especially on the defensive end, but not particularly in the open court. In fact one of his weaknesses has always been outlet passes off of a defensive rebound, unlike say Adonal Foyle who is very good at that specific part of the game. As for all of the concerns as to his heart , I think you'll find that is simply a load of poo-pooing on the part of critics. Just take a look at his minutes. The two years he averaged over 10 points per game were also the only two years he averaged more than 30 minutes per game. Whether Nelly plays him consistently is a whole different question. One things for sure you're going to love all those put back dunks he's going to get, he's an absolutely fantastic offensive rebounder. But, as far as who got the better end of the trade, I'll wait on that one. If one of those draft picks is 2005 first rounder it would have to be Atlanta's right? Because, if I'm not mistaken yours already belongs to Utah. Does anyone know if that Atlanta pick you got is unprotected? That could be pretty sweet for the Warriors.
I cant wait for the season to start. with shaq in the east Dampiers job is a little easier and we will need him to guard in the paint to slow dow Duncan and KG. We still have a chance at getting Jason Kidd. I thought the Mavs were gonna have a terrible offseason but its turning out good.
It sure sucks that we traded away Fortson. He would've been awesome relieving Dirk or Damp, but instead we have a (nearly) worthless C. Oh well, having Damp is definitely a good thing.
Another point to remember.... This deal was Almost made on draft day. There was talk that GS and Dallas were talking but the deal just couldn't quite get done in time, but Dallas went ahead with the Jamison trade that brought in Laetner and eventually Dampier. This deal might have been done a long time ago and we are just hearing about it now. Other trades, Walker for Terry, might have similar implications. Fortson for Booth probably looks a little bad no because we really need a backup power forward. But I remember listening to Donnie Nelson talk about how these little moves add up to bigger moves. His words "You have to load the bases before you can hit a grand slam". Fascinating.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Booger:</div><div class="quote_post"> But, Dallas got the upper end of the deal.</div>Care to explain why? The Warriors were going to let Dampier walk for NOTHING. The Warriors were able to get something for Damp, get rid of Ech's horrible contract and an unhappy Dan Dickua. The Warriors got a true hustle player and fan favorite in Najera with a better contract than Ech's. They also got a L8er who could be a nice player coming off the bench but more importantly he is in his final year of his contract. The Warriors also received the rights to Flores. And the Mavs also threw in 3 mil in cash. Not to mention 2 future FIRST round picks.
