Warriors got the better of the deal, considering they got something for Dampier. The Warriors were willing to let him walk, but instead they got cash, 2 first round picks, Eschmeyer off the books, and two solid frontcourt players. It also gives the Warriors a chance to pull off another trade, since they are 2 deep at every position and Laetner gives them another expiring contract to go along with Dale Davis, Clif Robinson, and Chaeney.

I like the move by Dallas, but if they are trying to win it all this season, why didn't they re-sign Steve Nash?

    <div class="quote_poster">Quoting Booger:</div><div class="quote_post">That was a really bad answer.

Anyways, THis isn't a major move. But, Dallas got the upper end of the deal.</div>
I was caught up in the moment so now that I'm calm let me explain

Devin Harris will a great backup who is 4th now for total steals in Winsconsin and on top of that destroyed Michael Finleys single season recored in scoring for Winsconsin. In only 3 years.(164)

Jason Terry Top 20 in Stl. per game and total steals. And he was a lot better defensively than Nash. And scoring wise he's great since he dropped 49 on Nash's ass last year.

Both of the Rookies (Marquis Daniels and Josh Howard) were on the All rookie 2nd team.

Eric Dampier 1st in Offensive Rebounds, top 5 in total Rebounds, and top 15 in blks per game.

Besides Shaq what other Center do the Mavs really have to worry about??? Yao hasnt fully developed yet, And out of the top teams in the West I'd say we have the best Center.

    Dampier > Olowakandi (t'wolves)
    Dampier > Vlade (lakers)
Dampier > edit:Miller (kings-their are you happy, Damp will still punk him)
    Dampier > Nesterovic (spurs)
Dampier < Yao (he is better than Damp)
    Dampier > Phoenix???
    Dampier = Nene (Denver)
Dampier > Wright n' Outlaw (Memphis)
Dampier = Ratliff (he's basically an defensive threat)
    Dampier > Okur (Jazz)

    1st Team...........................2nd Team
    PG-Terry............................PG-Harris/Dickau
    SG-Finley...........................SG-Quis'
    SF-Stackhouse...................SF-Howard
    PF-Dirk..............................PF-Henderson/???
    C-Dampier..........................C-Booth/Mbenga/Bradley

All we needed was a presence inside Defensively and we've got one, some perimeter Defense, and we got some. But I still know that we arent done dealing.

Here's my concern for Dallas fans...

You've gained a lot, but you've given up a lot. Offense flows best in familiar hands. With Steve Nash gone, and so many players coming and going... will the transition offense and shooting stay consistent?

Furthurmore, you've lost pretty much the only guy who can force a defensive stop in Najera.

As a Warriors fan, I'm thrilled with the trade, and I'm thrilled with Chris Mullin. He managed to convince the Mavs to give up Najera, Laettner, 2 first round picks, and 3 mil (I've also heard rumors that Luis Fiore is included in the deal- any validity to that?) in exchange for an FA that they would've lost anyways, an unproven, leadfooted, undersized point guard, and a guy who obviously isn't a viable center, or at least the Mavs didn't think so the last time they had him.

For the Mavericks, the plan is all or bust. You're hoping that Dampier inside shores up the defense, and that's enough to get them over the hump. The 03-04 Warriors were a team on which Damp played big time minutes, and due to streaky outside shooting, touched the ball a lot. The 3 point shot is the sexy play in Dallas, and when Damp doesn't get his touches, he sulks and gets lead hands. So, on such a great offensive team, you have to believe this trade is more for rebounding and defense than for anything else.

For Warriors fans, though, rejoice! Najera and Laettner pretty much solve the remaining question marks. We now have good size, good defense, good rebounding, good shooting... Mullin has this team ticketed for the playoffs.

The Warriors got something back but I certainly wouldn't say they got the better deal, Dampier is a double double guy who can play defense. They didn't need Najera and really what does Dallas need picks for? they aren't going to the lottery for quite a long time anyway.

The Mavericks didn't want to re-sign Nash for what he got offered, with the pay roll they already have, paying Nash 65 million is way too much considering the other contracts they have.

I'm no Dallas fan but they basically gave up NOTHING, Najera never played last season and in his 4 year career in Dallas he has missed ALOT of games. He is a soild defender but is not very quick, isn't a decent scorer around the basket. He however could do well in Golden State.

To replace Nash, Dallas have gotten Jason Terry, Devin Harris and Quis Daniels who can all run the point. Harris is their long term point guard and could easily become much better than Steve Nash, he is that kind of talent.

With this trade, Dallas now have the 2nd best center in the west.

I know you are a Warriors fan but this move does not get GS back into or even close to the playoffs. I'm not quite sure what direction Mullin is trying to go. Honestly there doesn't look to be much hope for the Warriors this year, the only good move that he has seemed to of made was re-signing Calbert Cheaney. Thats saying alot. Najera could be a good pick-up in limited minutes but not alot. You don't spend 80 million on Fisher and Foyle, not even Layden would do that.

I agree with AllNet...the Mavs really didnt give up nothing...Najera didn't play a game last season and the Mavs defense is slowly but surely coming along....Harris and Daniels are fastbreak guards and Jason Terry is a pass first guard so we really have nothing to worry about...there is no turmoil between this team now that Toine Walker is gone and they can gel and go further this year now that they have a CENTER! Najera and Laetenner are both injury prone and won't amount to much in Golden State and it's a big surprise Mullin took this deal....but they got a bunch of picks and money but i don't see GS making the playoffs with Damp now...

"Offense flows best in familiar hands" is the most important thing you
said. I expect the Mavs will not win the championship this year, but
we will be in better shape to do it over the next six or seven years.
Sometimes you have to take a step back, the "big three" had a great
run. But how do you keep the "big three" approach when you second
best player is not one of the big three (Marquis Daniels). All three of
the big three aren't considered great defenders, and two of them
(Nash and Finley) are among the worst defenders in the league.
Yeh, it will take time to rebuild chemistry, but it will happen, only
with far upgraded personel (youth, athletecism, defensively, depth).

I'm not a believer in the "one defensive stopper" idea. Heck, if Najera
did shut down someone (as he did Chris Webber), it didn't prevent
Bibby from lighting up Nash, or Kristie from lighting up Finley. No, you
can hide one below average defender, maybe two, but you can't have
four horrible defenders (include Jamison and Walker) on the court at
the same time and play defense. The way I see it now, only Finley
is a bad defender, but he'll provide his worth hitting big shots and
    drawing defenders.

As for Golden State, they got a lot more than letting him walk for
nothing. Mullin has done a great job of getting them out of cap hell,
but at the same time he's a idiot for giving Fisher that contract (not
even a top 30 point guard). So his performance is mixed, but more
    good than bad.

The Mavs now can make a stronger move at the championship, finally. With a solid center they can really compete with the top guns.

Not only his defense, but his offensive rebounding, low post scoring, and putbacks. On a team that takes so many jumpers, a guy that can give you a couple O boards a game is a big asset. Not to mention he can compete with/dominate any center in the Western Conference (Yao is the exception) and Dirk can go back to playing his more natural power forward spot. This creates even more matchup problems for the opposing team. I see a trip to the Western Conference Finals for the Mavs, and a 3-4 spot in the playoffs.

I think you will find that he will be able to defend Yao, just as well as he defended Shaq. He uses the same principle on defense...Dont let them beat you to the low block. He makes them post up higher in the post. That is how defends most centers.

There is no denying Dampier will make an impact on the Dallas Mavs next season. He gives them a premiere center capable of rebounding, blocking, shots, and doing some occassional scoring. The Mavs will have another year with a roster loaded with talent and depth at each position. They have added a lot of size with the additions of Booth, Henderson, and the rookie Pavel Podkolzin.

Despite all the moves, the key to the Mavs success will be the point guard position. Jason Terry and Marquis Daniels are great players, but from what I have seen, they both need a lot of touches to be effective.

Will either of them be able to sacrifice their offensive game and create shots for Dirk, Finley, and Stackhouse?

Will either of them have the leadership it takes to settle a team down during a dry spell and having the faith of their teammates to make the right decisions?

Jason Terry is coming from a team where he was the main focus on the offense. He has zero playoff experience, and can be inconsistent from game to game. He is a better defender than Nash, but also takes a lot of gambles, which will put pressure on the Mavs to rotate over.

Marquis Daniels looks like the real deal and a clutch performer. He was great in the playoffs last season and had the ice cold game hitting big time shots and being at the right place at he right time. I think he still needs one more season to put his game together, and is not ready to take on the responsibility and pressure to lead a team.

Devin Harris might be the wild card in all of this. Depending on how fast he can develop will be vital to the Mavs playoff run. If he can handle himself similar to Dwayne Wade or Jason Kidd in their rookie seasons, he will give the Mavs a boost off the bench.

The Mavs should be a top 4 team in the West and easily win 50+ games. However, I see them running into a lot of problems in the playoffs with their lack of experience at the point guard position. Going up against Tony Parker, Bibby, or Cassell in the playoffs is going to be a tough match up for the Mavs.

Like someone else mentioned, this might not be their year to win a championship, but they are heading in the right direction by getting Dampier. They just beter hope he plays with the same fire he did in his contract season and doesn't get moody being the 5th option on offense.

Very nice breakdown Shape. I have watched Damp for many years and he has the ability to be a real good center in this league. His problem has always been injuries and motivation. When he doesn't get the touches he feels he deserves he stops working and becomes ineffective. This could become a problem in Dallas playing next to guys like Nowinski, Stackhouse and Terry.

If he does produce next year it will be the first time he has in a noncontract season.

If you can't get motivated on a team contending for an NBA title then you have huge problems. Playing on a team like Dallas should boost Dampier's game. All Dampier needs to do for then is rebound the ball and play defense. He will not have to score at all to be effective. He is getting a huge contract and I'm sure he will live up to expections.

To be honest even If he only averages 9 and 8 while playing some D, the Mavs will be happy. Even though It's alot of money to spend...Dallas don't exactly need much from their big man in the middle with all the offensive firepower they have.

Has anyone realized that this is not official yet? If you actually read the article, this reported deal cannot fall through until later this summer/offseason because Dickau and Laettner were recently traded in deals. Laettner can now be traded, but this deal cannot occur until the 20th of September, which is about a month away. Unless the Mavs really want Dickau, expect this deal to change withing the next few weeks so the deal can be completed earlier and Dampier can prepare for the Mavericks earlier than late September.

Oh no....AllNet strikes again. What does signing Fisher and Foyle have to do with the argument on this trade? That's right nothing.

We held out on trading Damp the entire summer. We went after Shaq, we went after Stro and Battier, we went after Marion, we went after Bender and everyone lowballed us. The Knicks offered us 2 mediocre centers. All signs pointed to Dampier taking the Atlanta deal and we managed to replace Cardinal with a hustle player who has a friendlier contract then he does. How does Najera help? We needed a SF to backup Dunleavy, thats how. Those picks that are not in the lottery can also lead to attaining good players, where have you been? Artest, Nash, Bobby Jackson, Jamal Magloire, Sprewell, Brad Miller. 1st round picks can be a gold mine! Not only that but we get more spending money next offseason when L8's contract is up. Either let Dampier walk or get some valuable assets. It's not Marion but no one was willing to offer us anything of value.

I actually like all of the people on this board so I wish Dallas fans luck but I don't see how this Dampier trade will push them to the top. Last year, GS had a lot of problems scoring and When Damp got his touches all year he only averaged 12 points per game. His points are mostly putbacks or wide open drives to the lane. His rebounding is also a question since Murphy was injured all year. He'll provide some D against Yao which is good. If you give him the ball and tell him to score, 50% of the time he will not even get a shot up because he will turn it over. If he is not involved in the offense a lot, he will pout. With the options on your team like Nowitzki, Terry, Finley, and Howard Damp could face 5th option.

Allnet you seem like you mean well but you really gotta do your homework on the warriors before you comment on them. I don't think the Warriors are marching to the finals but some of the stuff you have said it's clear to me you haven't paid attention to detail. Stein of ESPN reported Foyle signed a 31 million dollar contract and Fisher signed high 30 million dollar contract. Layden wouldn't do that deal but he would sign Houston to the absolute maximum?? I don't think so. Both contracts don't accumulate to 80 million and we needed both of those guys. I'd rather have Foyle and Fisher than Dampier and Van Exel! Go read the warriors board and see how many people are bummed that their gone. As our president would say "stop the rhetoric".

How many touches are you a custom to seeing him take(Warriors Fans)???

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">If he is not involved in the offense a lot, he will pout.</div>
Was he involved when Murphy, Dunleavy and Van Exel were out??? Cuz I hope he's not gonna be looking for those touches cuz Dirk, Quis, Stack, Fin, JT, and Howard will be fine. We'll give him like 8 shots downlow on purpose but other than that, his points will come from putbacks and hussle.

am i the only one who believes dampier is gonna be worse than expected? he only plays well on his contract year as he's proven TWICE.

Hopefully, we can deal Stack for a good PG.

    PG - Terry
    SG - 'Quis
    SF - Finely
    PF - Dirk
    C - Damp

    Bench:

    PG - Harris
SG - 'Quis/Finely/Terry (one of them will be on the bench when Harris comes on)
    SF - Howard
    PF - Henderson
    C - Booth

Stack needs to be traded for a good PG and/or good bench players. I really dont like terry that much, so hopefully we can trade Stack + Terry for something.

Maybe something like Stack + Terry for Kidd + A-Train.

    -------------------------------------------------------

Dallas trades: SF Jerry Stackhouse (13.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4.0 apg in 29.8 minutes)
PG Jason Terry (16.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 5.4 apg in 37.3 minutes)
Dallas receives: PF Aaron Williams (6.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.1 apg in 18.6 minutes)
PG Jason Kidd (15.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 9.2 apg in 36.5 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -8.9 ppg, +2.7 rpg, and +0.9 apg.

New Jersey trades: PF Aaron Williams (6.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.1 apg in 18.6 minutes)
PG Jason Kidd (15.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 9.2 apg in 36.5 minutes)
New Jersey receives: SF Jerry Stackhouse (13.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4.0 apg in 26 games)
PG Jason Terry (16.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 5.4 apg in 81 games)
Change in team outlook: +8.9 ppg, -2.7 rpg, and -0.9 apg.

    TRADE ACCEPTED

Due to Dallas and New Jersey being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Dallas and New Jersey had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out unless trade exceptions were used for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    -------------------------------------------------------

We get rid of a SG trapped in a PG's body, and a guy who is past his prime and is one injury away from being the next Penny Hardaway.

In return, we get a great passer who runs the floor well and is a great leader. We also get a good inside player who will thrive with more mintues. He can play both PF and C and is a great energy guy. Gets rebounds, provides SOME shot blocking, just lacks a bit of offense, but with all the offensive machines we have, we wont need it.

Wut do you guys think? With a good leader who can distribute, a lot of players will not have to create their own shot. The only difference between Nash and J-Kidd is Kidd doesnt shoot as well, but he rebounds better. With a team like this, Damp might actually try, even if it isnt his contract year.

The lineup would look like this:

    PG - Kidd
    SG - 'Quis
    SF - Finely
    PF - Nowitzki
    C - Damp

    Bench

    PG - Harris
    SG - Stefansson
    SF - Howard
    PF - A-Train
    C - Booth

I think this lineup would be a serious title contender. matching it up w/ some of the better teams in the west.....

    Spurs:
    Kidd = Parker
    'Quis = Ginobili
    Finely > Bowen
    Dirk < Duncan
    Damp > Nesterovic

    Wolves:
    Kidd = Cassel
    'Quis > Hassel/Wally
    Finely = Spree
    Dirk < Garnett
    Damp > Candi

    Rockets:
    Kidd > Ward
    'Quis < T-Mac
    Finely > Jackson
    Dirk > Howard
    Damp < Yao

    Kings:
    Kidd = Bibby
    'Quis > Christie
    Finely < Peja
    Dirk > Webber
    Damp > Miller

Even agaisnt the best in the east....

    Pistons:
    Kidd > Billups
    'Quis < Rip
    Finely > Prince
    Dirk > Sheed
    Damp > Wallace

    Indiana:
    Kidd > Tinsley
    'Quis > Jackson
    Finely = Artest
    Dirk = J'O
    Damp > Foster

This has absolutely nothing to do w/ Damp becoming a Maverick. i dont know why i posted this, but lets not put all this typing to waste...lolz, sorry people
