<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Oh no....AllNet strikes again. What does signing Fisher and Foyle have to do with the argument on this trade? That's right nothing. </div> It was a reply to what Mullin is actually trying to do in Golden State in trying to work out what direction he is trying to take the team. He is basically wasting money. This trade is decent for GS only due to the fact they got something back for him. But it certainly won't help them become a better team, L8ner is most likely going to be traded again during the season, the Warriors have no real use for his game. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Allnet you seem like you mean well but you really gotta do your homework on the warriors before you comment on them. I don't think the Warriors are marching to the finals but some of the stuff you have said it's clear to me you haven't paid attention to detail. Stein of ESPN reported Foyle signed a 31 million dollar contract and Fisher signed high 30 million dollar contract. Layden wouldn't do that deal but he would sign Houston to the absolute maximum?? I don't think so. Both contracts don't accumulate to 80 million and we needed both of those guys. I'd rather have Foyle and Fisher than Dampier and Van Exel! Go read the warriors board and see how many people are bummed that their gone. As our president would say "stop the rhetoric".</div> I don't need to do any "homework" on the Warriors, I know enough about their situation and was well aware of the Foyle contract situation. But that contract could go as far as 40 million, he has certainly causes in his contract which could make that contract size dip to around 30 mill. It's still alot of money to spend on an unproven center who has yet to show anything but a guy who can block a shot in limited minutes, Derek Fisher is really only worth around 3 million these days but he gets between 33-39 million? not smart. Layden was an idiot for signing Houston to that contract but at least Houston was a proven scorer and one of the best in the league at shooting the ball. It's one thing to overpay for a very good scorer but It's totally different to overpaid for role players. I would rather save cap space for next summer where there are alot of very good players on the market, guys like Ray Allen and Zach Randolph would consider Golden State If given the money. The job Mullin is doing reminds me of what Danny Ainge has started to do in Boston, not impressive but It may pay off in the long run. Next off-season will test his managment skills, re-signing Richardson and Murphy. I know Warriors fans may be happy now but what exactly do you want your team to be in the next few years? an average team who always misses the playoffs by adding role players with your MLE or picking-up star quailty FA's? They should be in rebuilding mode, that would of been the more suitable solution. Looking at GS's salaries It would suggest quite alot of contracts are coming off the books next summer, which could give them a total salary of 19 million more than enough to get a top FA but all that depends If they keep Mike D, J-rich and Speedy Claxton. I would rather not spending much this off-season and go all out next summer where the Warriors can then be taken seriously.
On topic: the reason I like this trade is that I feel it's pretty even. It's similar to the Martin trade. They got 3 first rounders for their RFA, and we got a few 1st rounders and also swapped a bad contract for slightly more favorable contracts. Of course the difference with the Martin trade was that the Nuggets could have also flat-out signed Martin, while we had to mess around with the salaries to get them to match up. So, we technically could have had a better bargaining position since the Mavs were dependent on us pretty much to get Damp to agree to the contract. Maybe we could have got more, but other offers around the league were less, so I'm not going to complain. Off topic: The Warriors are pretty offtopic in the Mavs forum. I agree with your point Allnet, but unfortunately my influence on the Warriors as a fan is nil (maybe 2-3 tickets a season.) Of course it's better business to spend money on a proven star than to split it on two role players. But, no one wants to come to GS unless we can show that we can win. To be honest, it's almost desperate - who wants to be the laughing stock of the league? Ten years without the playoffs, that's pretty bad. While no one thinks the Warriors are the worst team in the league, most think they are not much better than that. Thus is one reason for those signings. Not the best decision - essentially "waste now and things come together just enough to win" versus "save now and declare more rebuilding and hope some big star wants to sign here despite our 10+ years of losing." Ouch. Of course fans want everything (to win now and to win in the future) but you can never choose both. We went for a kind of hybrid now-future which will really be dependent on draft picks... but of course, history is against us because very few draft picks help the team that originally drafted them succeed at the highest level without some free agent help. Another reason is that the league has been promoting the MLE to the executives. One "conspiracy" theorist suggested that these signings put the owners in a better overall bargaining position for the CBA. While I doubt that's the case, what the league does want is more "parity" and to have players be paid "middle" average salaries instead of players with max contracts and players with near league minimum. While an NBA "directive" or "recommendation" is a bad reason to sign these long, expensive contracts, it's not impossible that there's been some influence from somewhere.
