Cavs Assistant Coach Dies at 41

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Cleveland Cavaliers Assistant Coach Mark Osowski, 41, died Sunday, shocking the organization and the NBA community.

Osowski had collapsed at a basketball camp in Maine last month and was treated at a hospital for pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas.

The cause of death was not released immediately.

Osowski came to the Cavaliers last season after working as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors. He also coached with the Charlotte Hornets, where he met current Cavaliers Coach Paul Silas.

He was active in basketball camps and charities, especially in his hometown of Leominster, Mass. This summer, he took part in an NBA program in Brazil.

He had worked at camps for high school players in Germany. He also coached the Cavaliers' summer team in Orlando and Las Vegas in July.</div>

    Silas seeks coach with experience

Columbus - Just when the Cavaliers were recovering from the debacle that eventually sent Carlos Boozer to Utah as a free agent, more grief arrived last week when assistant coach Mark Osowski, 41, died after he was stricken with pancreatitis.

The timing of Osowski's death didn't give coach Paul Silas much time to grieve. He must find a replacement in time for training camp a month away.

"I've started [the search] but it will probably be another week," Silas said. "It won't be long because we have to have someone in place because the players will start coming in after Labor Day and I want someone in place shortly thereafter."

Silas declined to say who he has talked to about the position but Silas did describe what he's looking for in an assistant.

"Preferably someone that has been in the league, been an assistant coach and someone that can step in and pick up where Mark left off," Silas said. "I need an experienced guy."

But hiring a coach will be the least of Silas' challenges.

"The problem is that I'll have two new guys," said Silas, about his other recent hire, assistant Kenny Natt. "Kenny's new and this new guy will be new and [assistant coach] Stephen [Silas] and I will be the only ones who know the system. And it'll be a while before they pick up the system."

For the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Cavs will hold training camp outside of Cleveland. From Oct. 5-9, the Cavs will hold training camp at Capital University in Columbus. On Oct. 8, the Cavs will hold an intrasquad scrimmage on the campus. The Cavs will resume camp at Gund Arena on Oct.11.

"We're excited to come here for the first few days of training camp," said Silas during a news conference on Tuesday at Capital University.
