As we all know Jim O'Brien plans on having the Sixers play a run n' gun type offense. So that automatically rules the Sixers out as still being Larry Brown?s team. However, O?Brien still wants Larry Brown style running with the Sixers, but it?s going to be on the defensive end though. He has indicated that he wants the Sixers to go back to their NBA Finals roots, which is that hard nosed defense style of play. And as the Pistons proved against the Lakers in this year NBA Finals, defense wins championships. Also, if you haven?t noticed some of the East top teams such as the Pistons, Pacers and Heat, have or should I say an above average defensive games. So in order to rank among the best in East, we may need a good dose of defense within our team. But then again, we could just have a flat-out offensive team. Seeing as that Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings has done fairly well with their overwhelming offense, maybe we can attempt mimic them? Now we don?t necessarily have the pieces in our team to put up 100+ PPG, but no team in the East averages 100+ PPG (Other than the Orlando Magic, which was completely dismantled) so if we could at least average 95 PPG we just may do fairly well. And with that being said, should we be more of a defense oriented team, offensive oriented or well balanced team? Balanced Team PG- Allen Iverson SG- Willie Green SF- Glenn Robinson PF- Kenny Thomas C- Samuel Dalembert Offensive Team PG- John Salmons/Allen Iverson SG- Allen Iverson/Willie Green SF- Aaron McKie PF- Kenny Thomas C- Marc Jackson Defensive Team PG- Allen Iverson SG- Aaron Mckie SF- Corliss Williamson/Andre Iguodala PF- Brian Skinner/Marc Jackson C- Samuel Dalembert Thoughts...
Like I saw in some ones signature here on Just Bball it said offense sells tickets defense wins titles. We of course should be more defensive minded. By having Allen Iverson even if we are a defensive minded team first we will still sell tickets. As you have seen through sports the last couple of years defense often prevails. Looks at this years super bowl. It was two defensive teams showing defense gets you where you want to be. This years NBA Finals was great because it was a defensive minded team verses a primarily lack luster defensive team in the Los Angeles Lakers. As we saw offense is no match to a good defense. As Kobe Bryant shot under 40 % and the only win the Lakers got was on a miracle shot. If we have Iggy, Iverson, and Green on our team and play good defense that will allow us to open up the fast break more often like Jim O'Brien wants. meaning he gets both a run and gun team and a good defensive one. Also with good defense we would cause turnovers which would make up for our lack of rebounding talent we where low twenties in the league last year in average rebounds per game. Then add a good defense with a good center like Dalembert we could very well go back to our roots. I think that Iggy will provide us with something we lost when we traded George Lynch. He will give us a good all around player something we need. Also Dalembert will make up for the 2001 Mutombo and we still have Aron Mckie added with another sixth man of the year in Corliss Williamson and that makes up for Tyrone Hill who was one of our greatest defenders in 2001 in that championship run. One thing that may kill us is injuries. Our team is so fragile it always seems like they are injured. In 2001 was the last real season we where healthy and we showed what we can do. Hopefully it happens again.
I like a defensive oriented team w/o a doubt, just look at what Detroit did last year. But by looking at that defensive lineup I wouldn't like that lineup for most of the game or even to start the game. I did find something wrong w/ the offensive lineup, I think Green is a way much better offensive player than Salmons, but John is a better defender than Willie. If the 76ers can think defense 1st this season the will make a run in the playoffs.

Remember, out new style of offense if very similar to the New Jersey Net. (Before the team was dismantled) They played their signature fastbreak game very efficiently and affectively. Why? Well it?s because they had an excellent perimeter shooter in Kerry Kittles and an average mid-range shooter in Richard Jefferson. Now neither Iverson nor Green could shoot the ball as well as Kittles, so how would it work?

Not to mention we have layers like Korver and Mckie that can shoot the ball not to mention John Salmons and Glenn Robinson. Also our defensive big men are better and more athletic then the ones that New Jersey had allowing us to get up and down quicker meaning we dont have to rely on the jumper as much. See what we lack that New Jersey ahd we make up for in other areas that allow us to run the same type of offense well.

Quote:

Not to mention we have layers like Korver and Mckie that can shoot the ball not to mention John Salmons and Glenn Robinson.
Who? Kyle Korver? That's the last person that I would want to run a fastbreak game. He would have a very difficult time keeping up with the pace of the game. Yes, he would help open the court so we can run the fastbreak game, but Iverson and Green would be the only ones running. As for Glenn Robinson, well he?s yet another player who could give us the opportunity to get into the transition game. And unlike Kyle Korver he would be able to keep up much better. That doesn?t necessarily mean it?s a good thing. Even though he could keep up with that style of play more than Korver would, that doesn?t mean he?s can keep up with it. Aaron Mckie is the only exception. Right now, I?m starting to hope that he gets moved up into the starting line-up. His jumper is going to come as useful as his defense would. Not to mention, he?s a good fastbreak player. When he?s in the fastbreak game, he always finishes with the ball. And unlike Willie Green and Allen Iverson (at times), he would also be able to take care of the ball. Now we know that we will dearly miss Snow in terms of handling the ball, but Aaron Mckie can take some of that load off of Iverson. Aaron McKie is the full package. Almost forgot, as for John Salmons he is way too inconsistent. I wouldn?t be able to rely on him.
Yes but Korver won't be on the floor near as much as Kittle is for the Nets, so I'm guessing he means someone getting very significant minutes.

That would also provide others who can nopt keep up witht he game speed that well some resting time and those that are inconsistant like Salmons.
this will be the best defensive team and i will give defense ratings for them out of 10 iverson-6.5 willie green-7(GREAT perimeter defense, u no wat im talking about if u watch sixer games) iggy-dunno yet but i say between 6 and 8? kenny thomas-6 samuel dalembert-8 now i think these ratings r fairly equal.........maybe u think some players r better or worse but w/e as u can see this is probably gonna be their starting line up after midseason, everybody on the starting line up have above avergae defense.i say the sixers defense isnt too bad. last year it was BAD because iverson was still at sg, noone on the team was tough like hill or lynch and lil dog was on the starting line up and cudnt do shit.but we will def miss snow's d
A hard nosed defensive team is the best kind of team to have in the NBA,if you play good defense you can be mediocre on offense and still beat teams, even tough most of the time when good defensive teams play today they barely win,and grind it out it doesnt matter a W is a W. I think the Sixers have a pretty good defensive team,we have a thief (AI),an up and coming shot blocker in Samuel Dalembert, and good on the balll defenders in Corliss,Aaron Mckie, and Andre Iguodala. If we put it all together we could be one of the better defensive teams in the East IMO.
