Over the years (specialy the last couple of months), few big name superstars have requested trades, and demanded the team to send them to a certain destination of their choice.

Such situations put the GM's in a lot of pressure to get the best deal possible, but it's so hard to achieve so when you're time is limited and so are your options.

I really believe the NBA should do something about Trade Demands. Players get paid millions of bucks to play a game, the owners and the GM's have to make the 'Superstar' happy and not the other way around as it is in so many other sports.

I just think it's unfair to any team managment to put under this kind of pressure, or their long term plan of winning a championship is ruined by a superstar who woke up one morning, ate a bowl of Cherios, and figured a change of scenory would be good for his career.

    Waiting for your thoughts.

What prevents a player from nullifying his contract and just signing with another team?

it looks like every NBA all-star wants to win a championship. they are all demanding trades to better teams in so that they have a better chance a t winning. it must have begun with the Lakers' 4 horsemen and Shaq demanding a trade....

Trade demands are usually either a result of cockiness (Tracy), having problems with other teammates (Shaq), a team trading away your favorite teammates ( J-Kidd), or having problems with management or the fact that a player has reached close to the end of his deal and has said he will not resign with the team (again tracy).

I personally hate all players that demand trades when they do unless the orginization does not want oyu there or has disrespected you like in Shaq's case a player should honor his deal for when he signed it he agreed to the terms and amount of time he would play for that team. A contract serves a purpose dont sign it if you dont intend to honor it and dont cry about it afterwards because you signed it after both sides agreed to the deal.

Unfortunately, the NBA is about the players. They bring in the revenue, they bring in the fans and they sell the merchandise. I agree with the essence of this thread in the sense that a player, who is basically getting obscene amounts of money to put a ball in a hoop can dictate to such an extent, but while star players make the league go around, star players will have the pulling power.

Also, it's worth mentioning the sort of role the Player's Association plays in league negotiations. I'm not sure of the finer points, but surely they'd have to approve any sort of major rule change which effects their own personal stance?

The nature of the game has changed enough that there isn't too much you can do about it..

I definitely agree that it's all pretty sad. These guys have just taken their good fortune for granted.. Although at the same time, players do run the risk of alienating their fan base and being labeled by the media.. Which is also perhaps why only the biggest of the big names are opting for it.

I agree with Pure Skillz' point, that the Player and the team have agreed on the deal so they should stick by it.

However, I always wondered why would David Stern avoind all the questions about trade demands and its negative affect on the game.

This will hurt the NBA in the long term (being the the European expasion is seriousley considered by Stern and the head offices), something has to be done or superstars will end up managing their teams instead of the GM.
