Will the Lakers stick with the triangle offense for this upcoming season? Let's consider a few factors that make the triangle a good choice to stick with... <ul> [*]Payton is gone. He obviously didn't want to adjust to it, and this became one of the biggest problems for the Lakers last season. Payton wanted to work the ball himself and take the reigns of this team, but now that he's gone, it will be much easier to convince the team to continue with one of the most difficult offenses in the game. [*]Jordan and the Bulls mastered it. Remember, Phil brought this to Chicago when he took over in 1990, and they won the championship that year (three in a row, actually). Then, he carried it over to the Lakers in 1999, where he won three straight then. Similarity? Well, two incredible shooting guards. Differences? Shaq. The Bulls didn't have a "great" center, but they did have Pippen. Considering that Odom is an excellent passer and team player, it may take Kobe to put him at the top of his game, just like Jordan/Pippen. [*]Rudy could teach it. He's a great coach, and he knows the ropes. I assume he also knows the triangle...at least he's not a young, first-year coach...he's got championship experience, and he made alot of Houston's medicre players into good players alongside Hakeem (Elie, Cassell, etc.). [*]Kobe has played it practically his whole career. Ever since he was put into the game as a 35+ minute player once Phil came along, he's been exposed to the triangle. It would be like taking away your child's favorite toy before he grew too old for it...Kobe has yet to hit his prime, so let him run with it for a while longer and see how much success he can create in Los Angeles.
Is this a good idea? If not, what do you suggest? If the Lakers can keep good spacing, make a good entry pass (Atkins...work on it), and alot of cuts and fake passes to these players that cut (Mihm and Divac should fake to the cutting players each time, and make the defense aware of these cuts, to take focus off of Kobe), it can prove to be effective. I think they can do it...what do you think?
the triangle offense is really hard and it takes too long for players to learn. MJ and Pippen were able to pull it off cuz both of em were excellent one on one players and had great court vision. and the lakers dont have a suitable point guard to execute the offense. but maybe they will considering they have Kobe and with him being an excellent one on one player.
</div> Actually, the Lakers only started using the Triangle in the 99-00 season when Phil became the coach...Neither Del Harris nor Kurt Rambis ran the triangle. In addition, Rudy cannot teach it because he's never coached it. I'd bet that Kurt Rambis (laker assistant for all these years) knows the triangle better than Rudy ... To answer your question, no the Lakers will not run the Triangle, nor should they. They just don't have the shooters required to run that offense (as evident last year).. I do have concerns about Rudy T and his creativity with offense. In his years with Hakeem, their offense was heavy on Hakeem and 3pters. Not saying it was bland, but it wasn't anything extraordinary either IMO. In his last few years with the Rockets, Houston ran the most iso plays in the league. Now, I'm not sure if that's because of the personnel (Francis + Mobley) but that offense was bland... Rudy has already said its going to center around Kobe. Other than that, we'll just have to wait and see
Actually...what I meant by that was that Kobe's career practically began in 1999...not technically, but it pretty much did as he became the MAN alongside Shaq. Haha...I even put since he was drafted, but I didn't mean it that way...sorry

To tell you the truth I love basketball I get the basics and stuff but when you start talking plays, offense, and stuff I'm clueless. I've been on teams before but since I was a bench warmer I never got to really learn, we had a good coach. I know is sad but I love the game and the Lakers.
RUdy T has won championships. That tells you enough about him as a coach. Im not worried. Im just happy Kobe's case is at rest and the team can now move forward
We need to install a new offense besides the triangle. In regards to what notmuchgame said, we just don't have the players to run it, and we did see the triangle offense break apart, and a lot of our players including Payton and Kobe for that matter, didn't want to use it anymore, and they started getting frustrated with it. Rudy T has the championship experience and I'm sure he understands what type of offense this team needs to run in order for this team to have success this season.
they should start using pick and rolls more often. it was very effective for the pistons why not for the lakers?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting yanix:</div><div class="quote_post">they should start using pick and rolls more often. it was very effective for the pistons why not for the lakers?</div> If you remember...Malone and George were setting double screens for Kobe to play off of (well, attempting to set them), but this wasn't working because Malone wasn't adjusting to the triangle correctly...therefore, his screens were delayed a little. This was a mistake that proved to be costly for the team...because the defense could easily push through the screens and stop Kobe from advancing, just before Malone got set. By that time, Malone's defender was pulling away (since Malone can't take 20-foot jumpers consistently) and he was like another brick wall in the way of Kobe and his attempt to drive to the hoop. The result was...bad shot selections by Kobe.
Well, if the players are competent enough (which they should be since they're NBA players) they could run triangular offense when the right players are on the court (im thinking Kobe-Odom-Vlade) and also run another offense, not only when one of the "triangular" players are on the court, but whenever they are able to. This would be great since the defense would have a harder time to adjust.

The entry pass (and the decision on who to make it to) is a huge first step in starting out the triangle...and the way the PG cuts after he makes the pass...it's just too many factors, and would be confusing to continue to switch back and forth between all of those sets. Atkins and Vujacic would have to have excellent court vision and awareness to make big decisions like that, so maybe sticking to one solution is best for the team.
well Vujavic reportedly has great court vision. maybe after a while he can learn how to use the triangle offense.
I think the Lakers will and should adopt an offense similar to the Mavs. Like the Mavs (until getting Dampier), the Lakers are now weak in the middle. Their best players are at the 2, 3 and 4 slots, all are young and would excell in an open court game. If they Lakers are force into a half court game, they will struggle without a legit big man. The pick and roll will be the staple, but they'll try to run and not allow teams to setup a double team on Kobe. It isn't that bad of a thing. Phoenix will be pushing the tempo. Seattle and Denver are on board with this style of offense. Of course, none of these teams will win any championships any time soon, but it is an entertaining style that allows teams to exhibit their talent, especially when a big man is not in the mix.
THey will definately be more of a run and gun team like the mavs. But the mavs style of play never got them over the hump come playoff time. I curious to know what kind of offensive sets RudyT has planned or if he will allow them to create their own shots.
