As part of the effort to not only provide some entertainment and to gear up for the coming season, I'm putting myself out there for all takers. Debate-wise, that is. Starting next Tuesday(After the Labor Day holiday), Every other day, I'll take all on-comers who think they have what it takes to beat me in a debate on the Celtics or General NBA issues. ____________________________________________________ Here's the rules: 1. 1 Challenger per day (Sign up for your shot by PMing Me. I'll create a list and put it up on the board so that you know which day) 2. The day/night before you are scheduled to debate me, PM me the topic for debate. Yes, that's right. You can name the topic yourself! All I ask is that I get a few meager hours in advance to get my head into the topic. 3. All topics have to be debateable. (in other words, No topics that have definite, short answers. We want to have a debate, not a question and answer session) 3. The debate ends after one page has been exhausted (roughly 20 posts) or the 24 hour period has lapsed. All posts must alternate and since I'm the home team, I get last post. 4. The next day, a poll and discussion thread will be posted and the good folks here at JBB can determine the winner (which I assume they will do honestly and not according to friends, team alliances, etc.). Got it? Good, now Bring It On! _________________________________________________ Why do this? Simple: JBB has alot of excellent, young posters, who can benefit from not only seeing, but interacting with someone who's "seasoned" in a message board environment. There are others here who could sit in my place and share thier experience and talents. I'm just the sucker who volunteered. I think many people will gain some measure of entertainment and also gain knowledge of how to effectively get your points out there, see how a good point/counter-point conversation is structured, how to prioritize issues, etc. Most message boards don't afford thier posters the opportunity to learn how to pick up tricks and effective ways to be great posters. Most just let you register and throw you to the wolves, so to speak, leaving you to learn structure and technique for yourself. However, unlike most message boards, JBB cares about it's posters and wants them to live up to it's standards. What JBB's not willing to do, is let you sink or swim on your own(unless you want to). We'll help make you the best poster you want to be.

I'm an equal opportunity butt-kicker.
Hags: Could you switch my time to weekends too? I'm starting school tomorrow and I doubt that we could be both on at the same time to have a good debate on Thursday.
So Hargirid you can move mine to w/e time is good for you prefferable weekends though since I start traveling week days for football games at other cities. thank you.
If everyone wants weekends, and you need to slide me over to a weekday, that's fine. Only days I can't do it are Friday and Saturday. Although to tell you the truth, I'm having a hard time coming up with a topic.
I just hope nobody steals my topic, because what I have in mind is pretty easy to come up with, but can make out for a really good debate.
We're going to have a discussion among the mods about the debates. The manner in which they are structured right now is kinda daunting, particularly since many of the posters who have signed up prefer weekends and 24 hours worth of debating on a weekend isn't an easy trick for me right now. I've got Gaelic Football games all through the fall and they are all on the weekends, many overnight travel situations. Trip is next up, so we'll try to get some more reasonable structure set up and get together with him to schedule the next debate at the first opportunity. I hope that doesn't disappoint posters here, but simply put, it's either make some kind of change, or else I have to bow out of some of the debates and someone else will have to take my place.
Why not, instead of 24 hours, just put a post limit on it? Like the original rule was one page, or 24 hours. Why not do it so that you have 1 page worth of debates, and that it can last for any period of time, but perhaps not more than 2 days or something like that? So many of the people that could only do it on weekends, could also do it afternoons, and they debate until the space is filled.
FFSBasketball, that's a great idea. I'm sure that most people cannot fill enough posts within 24 hours to make a good debate, but a post instead of time limit could allow us to make the most of the page.
I agree. It was tough trying not to sound like you did in your last post when you are only making it a few minutes or hours later. I would say 20 total posts would be a perfect amount, and the max. time length should be 2-3 days. Also, I hope there isn't a one debate limit because I would love to debate Hagrid again. Perhaps we could eventually have a tournament of sorts where we get enough people to fill out a bracket and take turns debating each other until we have a champion. Possibly to coincide with March Madness? I don't know, I'm just throwing out ideas...
Actually 44, that's one of the ideas being thrown around right now, an all-site tournament. I'll keep you all posted.
With hagrid's permission, I'd be willing to be the next person to take on debaters. The debate could start Saturday night. If that's true, and you want to debate me, send me a PM with your topic, and we can start it. That is of course, if hagrid approves it.
