After the trade frenzy has seemed to clear these are my teams that i feel are the winners and losers. Losers Dallas Mavericks: They have lost their star point guard in Steve Nash to Phoneix and have traded Walker to Atlanta. I wouldve rather seen them try to get Shaq from the lakers for Nash and Finley or Walker. With the young Nowitzki and the most dominating player in the game (Shaq) they would have the 2 players needed to head into the finals with confidence. They obvisously want to build a young, fast team around Nowitzki but this isnt the way to do it. LA Lakers: Well everyone knows what happened here. Shaqs moved to Miami and they lost Rick Fox and Gary Payton to Boston. They also lost Mr 0.4 (Derek Fisher) to Golden State. The only good thing that Miami has done this post season is gain Lamar Odom, Caron Butler and Brian Grant from Miami for Shaq. Why lakers why. WHY TRADE SHAQ. NO ONE CAN STOP HIM. Cleveland: They mave have Lebron James but even MJ had Scottie Pippen. They need to get a good center like Shaq or a Garnett to play with him so they can create a Kobe/Shaq team and getting rid of Boozer has wrecked that. The team has relied on the 1-2 of Boozer and Lebron this season and without help teams will sufficate Lebron by guarding him like they did Michael Jordan and if Lebron doesnt develop like they say he does then Cleveland are looking down a dark hole. Winners Miami: Gaining Shaq was the best deal of the season. The most dominate player in the league has taken center stage in Miami and arent the fans happy about it. This will definetly make Miami a threat as long as Shaq keeps out of injury trouble and dwayne wade can play kobes roll a championship or 2 is in the making. Orlando:Gaining the Franchise (Steve Francis) will definetly help orlando though giving up the leagues leading scoring will be a hard loss. They dont call him the franchise for nothing. He will help them by giving them someone to build the team around which im certain they couldve done with McGrady. Houston: The trade to get Mcgrady was really icing on a cake for Houston. Though they had to trade Francis Houston needed a goto guy like McGrady to hit the outside shots and drive after Yao kicks it back out. This will give Houston a huge boust heading for finals which im fairly certain bout. Phoenix: Picking up Steve Nash off the FA is a huge boost in this team. It gives them a point guard who can shoot as well as feed Stoudemaire and Marion with the ball. It will make Phoniex a way better team but i doubt if they will do much in Finals. Thats my winners and losers if you have anything to say or change dont be hesitant to say it. (I made a few small changes to your Trade winners and losers thread. I changed nothing in the content, just added spaces in between the teams and highlight the teams you mentioned so that it was easier to read. Alot of it was blocked together and somewhat difficult to read and pull out points on the teams you mentioned. It was a good post and I didn't want to see it go to waste. I think you'll get more responses this way. Hope you aren't offended.)
I'm not sure I want to argue with any of the Losers, other than to note that Cleveland does have one of the better Centers in the league in Big Z. Problem is, he can't stay consistantly healthy, so maybe that's why you felt they needed to go get someone. Houston appears to be an off-season winner, but I'll wait until I see if T-Mac can swallow his ego and defer to Yao as the #1 option before I consider this a great move.
Yes, I am a Maverick fan. But I'm trilled with the way the offseason has gone. They got rid of the ill fitting parts in Walker, got younger, and now have a real chance to be a good defensive team. Going Old, with Shaq and Nash would have been an option, but Kupcheck nixed that deal, he was not sending Shaq anywhere in the West, even though the Mavs offerered a better package than Miami. But I'm glad they didn't make that deal. You neglected to mention that the added Dampier, the first true center they've had since Donalson, Stackhouse, a guy who scored 30PPG just a few years ago, Jason Terry, a young guy that reminds me of Steve Nash about six years ago, drafted Devin Harris, the point guard of the future, resigned Marquis Daniels, perhaps the most talented free agent on the market, did all of this without getting rid of the important components of the team in Dirk, Howard, Finley. Oh yeh, you just wait until you see D. J. Mbenga play Yeh, That was me with my big Mavs foam finger! Honestly, I understand where people are coming from when they say the Mavs lost in the offseason mainly because of the huge loss of Steve Nash alone. But the goal was to build a team around Dirk that will be a beast for five years, and I believe we are a much better team than last year, without a doubt.
I am willing to bet my life on it, that by the end of the season T-MAC will be the MVP of the league and Houston Rockets . Yao is good , but not great , and even i will admit that.

Layups missed left and right, 3's jacked up when ever he found a spec of daylight. Second of all, it would've been nice to get Shaq but the thing is you never trade a superstar within the conference. Laker's would of been absolutely stupid to trade Shaq, but keep him in the West, it's almost suicide. Especially with someone as dominant as Shaq. Third of all Trading wise the Mavs were great: -Walker -Jamison -Najera -L8ner -Fortson -2006 pick (1st round) 4 -Jason Terry -Eric Dampier -Jerry Stackhouse -#5 pick (Devin Harris) -Calvin Booth -Pavel Podkolizine -Dan Dickau (likely to be waived) -Evan Eschmeyer (likely to be waived) -Alan Henderson
Quote:

Oh yeh, you just wait until you see D.J. Hey guys, This guy actually isn't the first to absolutely hate what the Mavs have done this past offseason. I'd give us a B-. For those of you that think letting Nash go was a bad thing, think again. As much as I like him, I would never pay him 65 million over 6 years when he can't even play 35 minutes per game as we speak. That was a good cap saving move. The Walker move was needed... He wanted to be traded, and the only taker from rumors I heard was the Knicks. They have absolute garbage to offer (said they wouldn't give up Marbury, but I'm not sure I'd want him). We got Jason Terry in return for him who has never been on a winning time but did nicely, so we'll see how that turns out. DJ Mbenga... I don't think he's getting much playing time. Remember, this guy just started playing basketball. Pavel Podkolzine, sadly, seems to have a whole lot of potential... but I think he's a bust who was only drafted for his enormous size. He has no shot and we saw his draft stock plummet, whereas most mocks had the Raptors taking him instead of Chris Bosh the previous year. But hey, if Shawn Bradley's still in the league... I don't know much about Devin Harris... Other than he didn't do well at all during the summer leagues. If he was going into the season as our starting PG, we'd be in deep trouble (gotta be serious...). Erick Dampier is a guy I'm undecided on. He played well last year, but 30 is a weird age to have a breakout season. Hopefully playing on a winning team will keep him concentrated all season (had trouble with staying focused in Golden State). Giving him a contract until 2010-11 (he wasn't cheap either... starts off earning 7 mill in the first year and and up taking in 12 million in the last) may prove to be a mistake. So... What I'm saying is... Mark Cuban works in mysterious ways. Mavs fans trust in him while others just ask themselves "what was he thinking?". We'll see how this turns out. ;D
You can't forget the Nets. In both deals concerning K-mart and Kittles, both deals the Nets are in my opinion, losers. They gave up an emerging young player who has lots of potential, and a veteran who knows how to play, for a load of draft picks. I'm disgusted..

Quote:

I am willing to bet my life on it,
In general, it's a stupid idea to bet anything you can't afford to lose, particularly betting such serious stakes on something so absolutely trivial as that.

Thanks for informing me and i now realise what the Lakers were doing in trading to the East but still i wouldve liked him to stay in Lakers because of the type of player he is. The Dallas mavericks were losers because they are betting on there young players and draft picks developing into stars. Losing a premier guard for some young talent MIGHT work but it is taking a huge risk especially since you want a championship team like all others of cause. Yes i forgot about the Nets in my Losers part. They have lost there ability to run the floor by losing Kerry Kittle's Experiance and Losing Kenyon Martins Strength and Agility. They may have Jason Kidd but even that is in doubt and we all saw what happened with Richard Jefferson in the Olympics and how badly he played. So its a bad outlook for the Nets after getting close to a championship. Another team ive been thinking about is Toronto. Ive been hearing alot about VC wanting out of Toronto and i sense unrest out there. Also im worried about Philadelphia and im worrying they may lose their star AI. Both teams should seek to keep there stars in place and try to build something around them which Philadelphia has looked like doing last year with AI out for a while with Injury. I Did watch alot of Mavs games and from what i saw the Nowitzki-Nash connection worked well and with Nash driving and throwing it out to Nowitzki,Finley or Walker it looked like a great setup but Walker wouldnt hit those 3's like he did before and no one would make a layup to save there lives. They needed things to go their way and they didnt in season 2004. I wouldve traded Walker for a center to help out Nowitzki.
The Lakers made a good trade. No one can replace Shaq, but I think they received quality players in return.
^^^ I believe that individually, they did recieve quality players in return for Shaq. Problem is, can they p;lay together as a cohesive unit? I know I'm going to catch flack from Laker fans, but I don't think the Lakers are even going to make the playoffs this season.

Ohh poor little laker lover....Its ok my friend. You have had some great years. But...NOW COMES THE PAIN!!! Enjoy your year of crappy basketball.

Trade Winners -Washington Wizards: They acquired a very underrated star player in Antawn Jamison. -Miami Heat: No explanation required Trade Losers -Los Angeles Lakers: Just because you get players that match Shaq's value altogether, it doesn't mean they will do just as good with those players or do better. -New Jersey Nets: You don't trade your star player for 3 first round picks that you don't even know will be good or bad.
Great thread and all the original winners/losers have been pretty much said. But as for the LA trade, I personaloly think it was a Win-Win situation, I mean theLakers have alot of growing time, but Shaq only has limited time left and wont be as effective for too much longer. As for hte Mavs, I think they lost, but I think it will eventually pay off for them in the nextcouple of seasons.
Lakers are definetly losers in the western conference. Who is going to stand up to players like Garnett, Nowitzki and Duncan? They may get fast breaks but they will have to work hard to get steals because they arent gona get to many rebounds without the big diesel filling the paint.
