"We have no choice but to get replacements," NBA deputy commissioner Russ Granik said.

At the heart of the negotiation is a dispute between a 6 percent wage increase being demanded by the referee?s union compared to a 3.5 percent increase offered by the NBA. </div>

Wow, that is the best news I have ever heard.

Now these replacement referees better not ruin games as much as the referees who did, if not at all.

Except that the new refs will be even worse, seeing as they won't have the NBA experience. This is a fairly big problem - despite not being great, they're the best we have. Replacements could be much worse, not only at calling games, but keeping things under control, knowing when to call Ts and when to walk away, etc.

I'm guessing that the refs who work everyday that make some stupid calls, will be replaced by even stupider Refs who will make more stupid calls [IMG]

We can't win at all [IMG]

This is a bad idea for the NBA, IMO. I agree with FFSBasketball. These new refs will not know the NBA game. They will make worse calls, and players will probably think they can take advantage of inexperienced refs and the game could turn out to be a mess. I read somewhere that the new refs could be much like the refs in the Olympics. If that is the case, 95% of NBA players will suffer from the way they call the games.

Another thing, I also read that another cause of dispute is that the NBA wants to be able to fine refs $50,000 for disrupting a game in any way. The apparent reason for this clause is that the league doesn't want any more incidents like when all the refs wore the jersey inside out to protest that guy Henderson's suspension. This is also a bad move in the league's part. The protest did nothing to disrupt the game, and the refs have a right to speak out silently, just like anyone else in this country. Besides, the L made a bad call by suspending Henderson in the first place.

As any Ball fan (and Laker hater, I might add), I was pissed when he made the bad call and gave the game to LA. But unless the L has evidence that Henderson was paid off, it was purely a human mistake, something that is inevitable. It just happend at a bad time. He should not have gotten suspended.

The L would benefit from allowing instant replay on calls like that, not just on last second plays.

Replacement refs wtf? Reffing can be stressfull. I know I wouldn't wanna be a ref. Getting yelled at by various amount of people night in and night out I know I go right back at em and say F U son! But a raise. Blah.

This won't be the first time... they had replacement refs years ago, and only had 2 officiating each game (oppose to the standard 3)...it worked out fine if my memory serves me correctly

Refs work real hard and it takes a lot of experience to ref a nba game. throwing these guys in without the help of a veteran ref could be bad

Well it depends on who the replacements would be. I'd have no problem if the NBA replaced some of the refs with new legit refs, however - I wouldn't want to see someone inexperienced ref the game.

If these old refs are actually decent (which some are) I say give them a raise. If they are crappy to begin with, well then - goodbye.
