Richardson deserves extension?

I read an article that said Richardson wants a contract extension in the ball park range of 6 years, $72m. He wants an extension similar to Richard Jefferson who got similar money. Jefferson, averaged more points 18.5/17.8. He shot a better percentage from the field 49%/44%. And they went to the playoffs and Championship game. Richardson's argument is that Jefferson played with 2 All Stars. Give him 2 All Stars to play with and his numbers would be even better, especially the team's playoff absence.

I can understand his argument for the teams record with no All Stars. But when Qrich signed with the Suns this summer, it was only for 6 years, $42m. If we could settle for 6 years at $50-55m per season, I would be satisfied. My question is if Mullin buckles to the pressure of Jason Richardson and his agent and gives him the money he wants by this Friday, what does that mean for Murphy? How much does he want? Can we resign him too if we resign Richardson?

I don't know the whole situation and how everything would work out money wise, zhone or wtwalker would have to explain that one. But Murphy is more valuable to this team than JRich is. We don't have a replacement for Troy Murphy that can put up those kind of numbers and do the same things that he does. We all know how hard it is to get a good big man, especially one that can rebound and shoot the way Murphy does.

Who on this team is going to score 20pts extra per night to take up Richardson's slack? IMO Richardson is more valuable than Murphy is at this point.

I would go with Murph becase he's a lock for getting double doubles (a very consistent role player as a starter), but I don't want to lose a possible valuable trade piece in Richardson as well if we need to trade either Pietrus or Richardson for somebody franchise worthy. If they ask for more than they are worth, I'd say avoid it. A long and terrible contract is worse than not signing them at all. But yes I agree we need Jrich if we're trying to also accomplish the goal of improving the record.

Dude, its simple. Extend Jrich and Murphy for a reasonable amount, pass on Dunleavy. Let Petrius and Biedrens develop, extend them, and all the while look for a PG in the draft...

Its not that easy Warriorfan. If we could sign jrich and murphy for a "reasonable" amount than we wouldn't be having this conversation.

What I meant was passing on Dunleavy and replacing him with Petree was simple...

Here's the article where it reports he's asking for Richard Jefferson Money:
With a three-month negotiating window less than a week from closing, Jason Richardson on Tuesday called it "mind-boggling'' that the Warriors have not extended his contract.

Richardson, the team's top scorer and second-leading rebounder last season, revealed that he is seeking a package "somewhere around the area'' of the reported six-year, $72-plus million contract small forward Richard Jefferson received from New Jersey in August.

No problem. I'm a little bit upset that Richardson is whining to the press about his extension. It's obvious the warriors don't want to let him go. He's our best player. He should just keep his mouth shut for the time being and stop whining about himself and bagging on his teammates. Murph's in the same situation as well. Plus Jrich is the one crying about how he has no allstar teammtes like Richard Jefferson and yet he wants all this money like he can be the one to single handedly carry the team. We sure as hell aren't going to get allstar teammtes or sign any with what he's asking for. He should take the 9-10 mil per year offer and surround with good talent and not have him suck up the entire team's cash like Jamison did. I swear the guy's getting an ego trip. I thought he was humble. I guess it all comes down to money when Jrich is whining how he makes the team better by winning dunk contests and beating up on scrubs where nobody plays defense in the rookie allstar games.

Yeah unfortunately, this is the world of professional sports. That's why many would just rather watch college sports. But I like the idea of players from around the world coming over here to compete and play with our American players. Plus I'm just a hardcore warriors fan who loves to see what my favorite college players turn out to be. I'm hoping Jameer Nelson can make an impact in Orlando.

There are a number of factors that are complicating the Richardson/Murphy extensions. Here are a few of them that are probably weighing pretty heavily on Mullin's mind: (by the way, sorry for the long post, I guess I'm falling back into old habits.)

    1. As Richardson pointed out, he compares very favorably to Jefferson who got a huge contract extension, about 72 mil, but just about everyone will agree that the Nets really overpaid for Jefferson. But I think its the other guys like Maggette, Quentin Richardson, Stephen Jackson, Battier, and Ginobili that will be the ones that set the market for Richardson (around 5-7 mil in their first years).

    2. Mullin is gambling on whether Richardson becomes a "go to" guy. This year he is the unquestioned #1 option, so we'll definately know whether he is capable of taking over a game. If he can take over a game it will cost Mullin probably around 3 mil more a year (at least) over what he'd pay Richardson if he proved that he can't be a #1 option.

    3. The CBA expires next year and every indication is that the next CBA will be even more owner-friendly than this past one, meaning a lower max salary and a 3 or 4 year max contract length. Now if the Warriors decide to resign Richardson and/or Murphy now or next offseason it will be under the current CBA. But if Richardson and Murphy will only take one year tender offers (like what Olowokandi did with the Clippers) they would become unrestricted free agents and would sign their new, big contracts in the '06 offseason.

The gamble that Richardson and Murphy would be taking is that the max contract lengths and yearly amounts would be much lower than they are now. This could mean that what looks like a lowball offer right now could be a better deal than what Richardson and Murphy could get under the '06 CBA.

Of course the owners could decide not to mess with player contracts if the players decided to cave and consent to an age limit, which I think is also very possible. So Mullin is taking a risk as well.

I think the only real affect the new CBA will have on Richardson and Murphy is making them nervous enough to accept a lower amount than they would have if the current CBA had a few years left on it.

    4. Mullin has to be happy with the way thinks went with Damp's contract negotiations. While he undoubtedly irked Dan Fegan by playing hardball, he showed that he wouldn't be bullied into giving into Damp's wishes. Mullin was also helped out by the fact that the market wasn't all that interested in Damp. I have a feeling that with so many good shooting guards and power forwards around, Richardson and Murphy are going to have a hard time getting the upper hand in negotiations because the demand just shouldn't be there.

    As for the original questions...

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Warriorfansnc93:</div><div class="quote_post">My question is if Mullin buckles to the pressure of Jason Richardson and his agent and gives him the money he wants by this Friday, what does that mean for Murphy? How much does he want? Can we resign him too if we resign Richardson?</div>

What does it mean for Murphy? It depends on what kind of year Murphy has. Of the two, Murphy is less likely to get a deal done because of all the injuries last year, there just isn't enough of a body of work to go off of. I don't think there's any scenario where he'd get as much as Richardson, but you never know.

How much does he want? Again, it all depends on this season. The useless answer is that he wants as much as he can get, so then the question becomes what does he think he can get (read: what do I think he can get). I'd say the best case scenario for Murphy is that he averages 17/12 and gets around 7 mil a year. Worst case is that he gets injured or averages less than 10/10. Under that scenario he'd probably get around 4 mil.

Can the Warriors resign Richardson and Murphy? Yes, if they want to they can sign each to max contracts because of the fact that the Warriors have the players' Bird rights by virtue of them being with the team for more than three years. They could sign them for quite a bit without even coming close to the luxury tax, but I don't think they will.

Bottom line, my guess is that Richardson gets a contract starting at about 7 mil and Murphy one at about 6 mil. I have no idea what they'll do with Dunleavy. A lot of thinkgs can happen in two years.

Wow Great Post! If there is a new CBA we might be looking at another possible lockout season. Doh!

It's always a fear, but given how bad the last one was and how bad the NHL one currently is, I'd guess both sides would want to avoid another lockout.

Yeah especially because you'd want to keep the Trail Blazers off the street as much as possible in case Qyntel Woods let's his dogs loose or you get run down by Zach Randolph driving his car after he's had a few.

Okay, that's one of the funniest things I've read here in awhile.

I've never thought of the Blazers as a sort of work-release program, but it sure makes sense.

JRich needs to start making others around him better. Its not about being the "go to guy." Neither Magic nor Bird were the "go to guy", they were the leaders. Someday, people will remember that. MJ was an abberation. Dr. J was not the go to guy either but he made those around him better. Sir Charles was great when he was rebounding, passing, scoring, not when he put his ass on the blocks and demanded the ball.

I have faith that Mullin knows this and that's why he understands that Dunleavy is the better building block. (See SI Preview issue with scout's take on Warriors.) Mully scored 27 ppg without demanding the ball and declaring that he was the go to guy (a little bucket hanging though.)

Somebody needs to remember who won the Championship last year and the year before and whether there was a go to guy on each team. (Nope, even the Spurs post Duncan but he is not down there scoring at will with 30 secs left, no he does his damage in the flow.)
