Who's likely to start in place for Bob Sura? Who's also more likely to be the backup PG when Sura comes bacK?
Im guessing Ward, but I dont like him. Flopper, slow, can't hit an open shot if he was hit in the head with the ball. Lue deserves a chance, but we need some depth. Not likeing the guard situation. No real back-up for T-mac. Ward and Lue are bad insurance. Rockets played wretched today. I expect a win tommorow, but Denver has a good team and is 5-1.
Actually, I think Ward has played very well in the preseason so far. He's probably not quite as good a shooter as Lue, but he's been decent. His defense has impressed me the most -- yeah he's a "flopper" but he draws plenty of charges as well. He's also a steady ballhandler and the offense runs more smoothly with him than with Lue, from what I've seen. When Sura comes back, it's tough to say who'll be left out. Sura is valuable because he can play both guard positions, but he may take a while to get in game shape. I'm guessing that Ward will be our starter for the season.
It's for a fantasy league and these are the only two PGs worth noting that are available. Damn...I know Lue is likely to score more than Ward but Ward is likely to get more minutes and start. If they split the minutes I'd rather pick Lue. Another thing with Lue is he's gonna be playing under a stricker team than the Magic. Also Ward knows the Jeff Van Gundy system so he is a favorite over Lue.
Saying that Ward's a bad spot-up shooter is really wrong. He has been a 40% three point shooter in the past few seasons and that should say something. He is perfect for the open looks that he will be getting with Yao throwing passes out of double teams. Lue, on the other hand, is better suited coming off the bench because of the energy that he brings. I think he should come in when Yao's out so he can go uptempo with McGrady. Yao would be too slow to keep up with him anyways.
Ward should and will be the starter...he plays aggressive defense and passes well and has shown to be the most consistent 3-point shooter of the guards, which helps when ur playing with Yao and Tracy...Lue is perfect as a backup for a change of pace but still is too undersized to match up against starting NBA point guards...
This just came to mind...it's like picking the best out of the worst. Our pg position is certainly the worst position out of the others..I was hoping we had a solid pg for more confidence since point guards are the ones who are supposed to run the team. Looking at Ward..he looks low in confidence..a quiet guy with no leadership and washed up..and looking at lue..i dont know if he's a thug, an a.i wannabe or just an annoying looking little guy..everyone tells me he's ugly. I dont want him to run our team. And if worst comes to worst, I don't want tmac going to our pg position since he'll be a hog. and lastly reece gaines, from what I saw of him..he has a long way to go..but he does deserve a chance ..The point guard position may not be a priority to vangundy's so called offense but I dont trust van gundy's offense so far since what he always promised on having was yao being the 'center' of offense but it hasn't ever worked effectively yet.
Ward is the better guy at running a offense imo, he isnt going to create much off the dribble as far as getting others easy points. But he normally makes smart decision with the basketball. And normally doesnt turn it over much. And he knows how to get the ball to the team's playmakers in the right spot, so they can make the plays & get others involved. Lue will bring some scoring & shooting punch off the bench but I would rather Ward run my offense, if I was Van Gundy.
Actually, we have a pretty deep point guard collection. Although none of them will be all-stars, our PG's will be more than efficient to run our offense. Ward is not washed-up. He still plays great defense, and is experienced in Van Gundy's system. Lue is a good option for a backup, and Sura, when he returns, will provide scoring from the point guard spot. Regarding Van Gundy's offense, all I have to refer to is the New York Knicks of the 1998-2000 years. In those years, the Knicks had Van Gundy as a coach, and Patrick Ewing, Allan Houston, Larry Johnson and Latrell Sprewell. Now, all of these guys could average 20 points, but none of them did and nobody questioned Ewing's role as the center of the offense, although he didn't always lead the team in scoring. This could be the case with Yao too. Yao might not lead us in scoring, but there will be no question that he is the focal point of our offense.
Ward is a vet. he should start. As someone else mentioned, Lue provides great energy comin off the bench.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting heatfan83:</div><div class="quote_post">Who's likely to start in place for Bob Sura? If i had things my way, Sura would be a sure starting PG, but even with Sura 100% I can't see Van Gundy letting one of his favourite NBA players sit on the bench. Ward will start over Lue and will start over Sura too. That being said, I think Lue COULD start but he is a very good player off the bench. Very underrated aswell.
Lue can do a good job when he starts, but is much more effective when coming off the bench. He comes in for a change of tempo and can play the running game as well as slow it down when required to.
