<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Jason Richardson and Troy Murphy will stay with the Golden State Warriors for the long term after agreeing to six-year contract extensions with the team a day before the start of the season. The Warriors faced a Sunday night deadline to get the extensions done but got an extension from the league and completed the deals Monday afternoon. Both players would have been eligible to be restricted free agents after the season if they hadn't signed the extensions. </div> <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-warriors-extensions&prov=ap&type=lgns%5b/URL" target="_blank"> ]Link</a> An 11th hour deal, after the NBA granted an extension for both players. Both are signed to 6 year extensions, to an unknown amount of money. Pretty surprising after the hardball that agent Dan Fegan was throwing about recommending a trade out of GS.
As was noted, the offer for J-Rich was over $60 million over 6 years, and for Murphy, $50 million over 6 years. J-Rich wanted $72 million, equivalent to Richard Jefferson, and Murphy probably wanted almost $68 million, equivalent to Boozer money. Hopefully they compromised at the middle or lower - J-Rich at $66 million over 6 years, and Murphy at $55 million. We'll find out the real numbers soon enough.
I AM SOOOOOO HAPPY WE GOT THESE GUYS SIGNED!!! I think Murphy is going to be a solid player. I dont think $50m is too much for him. And I really am excited for Jrich. This guy is going to be clutch and will start to take over games for us. Now all we need to do is groom Pietrus to take over for Dunleavy, and get Biedrens bulked up to play center and we will be set!
I don't think this is a good thing, becuase right now we're basically stuck with same team for years to come. And they haven't even made the playoffs with these guys.
It's weird. GSW have a good nucleus, no doubt about that... but Pietrus, Dunleavy and Biedrins are their three guns long-term, the #4-7 guys are now locked up (Murphy, Richardson, Fisher, Foyle in that order). You'd have to hope that while signing up these talented guys, that the future of the franchise (the three aforementioned players) aren't lost by the wayside.
Well at least they're in a better position to trade. Hopefully we'll make the playoffs before it comes down to that. But you never know Jason Richardson for Paul Pierce
espn is reporting the terms of the deals. Richardson is 6 years and between 71-72 mil. Murphy is 6 years and 60 mil. Here's the link. I dunno. 72 and 60 are at the very top of the range I would pay them if I were Mullin, and I wouldn't have even considered signing them to contracts that size until they'd played this year and proven that they were worth that much money.
How much salary is committed to Richardson, Murphy, Fisher and Foyle on a yearly basis now? 37 million by my calculations.
Cohan better go over the cap if Mullin asks for it. It seems to me like a lot of money is invested in these guys when Biedrens and Pietrus could turn out to be real studs.
Okay, 6 years 60 mil works out to be roughly 7.5 mil the first year with 12.5% annual increases. And 6 years 71 mil works out to be about 9 mil in the first year with 12.5% annual increases. Now the question is this: what kind of stats do Murphy and Richardson have to put up to be worthy of these contracts? I'd say for Murphy it would have to be about 16-17 points and 11-12 boards. Richardson would have to put up at least 22-23 points, 7 boards, and 4 assists, and be in serious contention for the all star game. If they do that next year, then I'll say they're worth it. I won't put a minimum on their win total because there are too many other variables, but next year they'd definately better make the playoffs. But since I'm an optimist by nature, I can say this: I guess this means I can go out and get that Troy Murphy hardwood classic jersey without having to worry about him being traded.
Yeah I was just thinking about that when I saw those Murphy and Jrich Jerseys... I'm like maybe I'll just buy a blank jersey or the ol #17 Jersey.
I personally feel that the Warriors had to sign Murphy and Richardson to a contract before the deadline. If Mullin had not then human nature would have made Murphy and Richardson play either cautiously to not get injured or very selfishly to pat their stats for their next contract. I like to see the positive of the signings, first Richardson has gotten better every year and has not reach his potential plus he's still young and is the face of the Warriors and actually likes being a Warrior. Murphy has also gotten better every year except the year he was injured but eventhough he got injured he manage to play the last part of the season and look good. Everybody should stop pinning for somebody else's player and stick to the player and chemistry the young core of Warriors have assemble. I like this team that Mullin assemble and really feel that the Warriors will surprise a lot of people this year. Will the Warriors make the playoffs? with a little luck and everyone healthy it is possible. Will they win more games than last year? I honestly feel that they will. I can't recall being this excited for a Warriors team since the Run TMC teams. Lets just give them a chance to grow together, learn together and they will become a contending team for years to come.
I think that its great that the Warriors got the two biggest parts of the team to resign. I Hope that this will set them on solid ground in the next few years.
I agree with Duckmyster that signing them now allows the team to play with a clear conscious at least.
Yeah and the bench are at least good role models (no Fortson, Mills, etc.). I guess I'm pretty easy to persuade on the matter because reality is we don't know what to expect and we need to keep our core together to have a chance rather than keep on rebuilding and getting no where. Also we know our salary cap situation in re-signing Dunleavy, Pietrus, and Biedrens is going to be hard on us, especially if they turn out to be dynamite and we're stuck with all these six year deals. Like I said before Cohan you better prove you're willing to do Larry Ellison type risks to win. And I'm holding Rowell to his words on that Cohan isn't afraid of spending money.
I'd agree with it if Murphy was getting 6 years/45 mil and Richardson was getting 6 years/55 mil. I don't agree with it at these prices though. I just hope Mullin knows what he's doing.
Can we even be sure of those numbers though? That would be nuts to sign them both for more than they're worth just not to lose them. That sounds like St. Jean talking right there. Maybe it has to be a certain price in order to trade one of the two.
I think we can be pretty certain of the numbers. The espn article said it was a "source close to the negotiations," which generally means one of the sides leaked it.
I've been giving Mullin the benefit of the doubt to date, but if the numbers reported are accurate, then I have to say that they simply don't understand the market value for players in this league. Restricted FAs don't get huge offers, and it was foolish to give that much money to two guys that have holes in their game. Foyle got more than the MLE, which didn't make sense since no one was going to offer him more, now this. I hope Mullin knows what he's doing, but I don't think he does. And I hope I have to eat these words later. Let's start playing and find out.
