for the last 3 years these two guys are always front runners for mvp. But who will go down as the better player. Personally I think Garnett is better than Duncan rite now and will remain better in the history books. Garnett will become the first player to do 20-10-5 6 stratight years. Garnett is putting up numbers no one has seen ever. The last two games 28-20-7-5 and 25-15-7-5. I mean are you kidding me. Back to back nights, thats amazing. Hes gonna do something crazy this year. Duncan is a very solid player, especially in the post, he always has his cool, and can handle the pressure. But Garnett is more skilled, much more. And every year he is getting smarter. Garnett hands down is the best player in the NBA. Duncan is still number 2 or 3 this year, but Garnett will go down as a top 5 great of all time.
Depends on if Garnett wins a championship before he retires. I'm not saying that it matters as far as a player's ability goes, but it sure looks nice on paper when you're considered one of the best right now AND you have a championship to prove that you can work with your team. Right now, Duncan is better because he has the credentials. When both are retired, it depends on what they did in the past...and that's the difference-maker. You can watch these two guys right now, and judging on ability and being a "complete player" in the eyes of fans and analysts, I think Garnett has the advantage. But when you stack on Duncan's defensive awards, his MVP's, his two rings, and overall success compared to Garnett...it's just too tough to judge. Wait until both careers are over with, and then ask this question.
Garnett is constantly improving from season to season, whereas Duncan has been a steady for the past 4 years or so. If both players retired today, Duncan would be remembered as the greater player, but I think Garnett's peak will exceed Duncan's.
I think Duncan will go down in history as the better player because he does have two championships and is more of a leader than Garnett. I'm not taking away anything from Kevin Garnett but Duncan is simply just better.

Shaq didn't win his first championship until late in his career. KG still has a long time to make up for TDs accomplishments. It isn't implausible for him to win as many as 4 rings and MVPs. (not saying it will happen, but he is capable of doing it if you give him his Scottie Pippen or Kobe Bryant)
When choosing the leagues best player you can choose either one of them, but I think if you are looking at skills Garnett is the better player. Many will consider Duncan better because of the 2 rings and he has one more MVP award.
Garnett will go down as a better player. In my opinion he plays and works harder than duncan but I don't beleive he will win as many championships because Garnett does'nt have the supporting cast duncan does.
They are both great but i have to go with Duncan. Why because If i have to see Miami in the finals. I want Duncan on Shaq then KG on Shaq. Minny always has three or four diference guys on Tim. but the Spurs always has Tim on KG. The Spurs don't have any allstar like what Minny has and he still does it year end and year out. This is the first year that KG made it out of the first round and he has been in the NBA since 1995 and thats all he has ne MVP/once out of the first round. note: Tim missed about 9 to 11 games and still came close to have the best record in the west by one game.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Oneinpower:</div><div class="quote_post">note: Tim missed about 9 to 11 games and still came close to have the best record in the west by one game.</div> Doesn't that prove that Duncan's got a better supporting cast?
If Garnett was as good as mentioned he would have made it out the first round more than once. He had pretty decent supporting casts. That wasn't really the problem. Garnett isn't a leader like Duncan is.
Garnett probably wasn't a leader in the first years of his career but at the same time was Robinson and not Duncan the leader of the Spurs. But again both became a leader, just read what Sam said after he joined the wolves. Last season was Sam the clutch shooter and many claimed that this is the last thing missing in Garnett's game, but I say Garnett is a pretty good decision maker in crunch time and this season he will do better in these crucial minutes, shooting 70% in the last quarter over the first games is quite impressive. And talking about skills, Garnett is hands down the better of the two, he has more range and is better at the free throw line.

For example punching one of his teamates in the face? That doesn't reflect a leader. Atleast not to me. Duncan also has a better playoff record.
First of all leadership on the floor and leadership in the lockerroom are similar but still you have to look at them as two different things, and I mentioned both of them. When I was talking about his impressive FG% in the last quarter I was talking about on the floor and when I mentioned what Sam said about KG when he joined the team (can't find it at the moment) I was talking about the "general" leadership. When you talked about Duncan bringing his team to 2 rings, I think that's more leadership on the floor. In Duncan's first years, he was not the lockerroom leader, that was clearly Robinson. And about KGs incident, as long as I don't know exactly what happened I don't judge anyone for anything. Many people just make up stories to get some media attention, some things are true and others are not. I only heard one side of the story and that's not enough to judge it. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Duncan also has a better playoff record.</div> I don't know what this last sentence has to do with leadership qualities but anyway. Duncan has probably a better playoff record than 90% of the NBA players or more as he has already won 2 rings! But you are repeating yourself, if leadership and rings are the only things where Duncan is better than belief me, he won't go down as the better player of them two in history.

Tim Duncan is the better player. he may not put up monster numbers like KG , but he is a better leader for a team. Reason for Tim Duncan: Able to win 2 championships with just role players. Never had an all star on the team other than him whe nhe won those championships. Timmy is able to win with role players. KG is just not. KG had sam Cassell last year(top 3 point guard) and LAtrell Sprewell(good scorer). KG still couldnt win. THat is the difference here. TImmy is a better leader. MAny people may argue but Timmy is not an emotional leader, he is always clam and never gets frustrated like most players. Tim Duncan in my mind is right up there with Charles Barkley and Karl Malone for the best power forwards the gam has ever known. Timmy is even better than them. And his career still aint over.
Come on.....Tim Duncan had an excellent center helping to stop penetration. He had the best perimeter defender in the league, and a top point guard. He had three point shooters too. Yeah KG had Cassel, and he won with Cassel. The only series that they lost was the one were Cassel could not play. As for Spree, he is the posterboy for streakiness. Don't sit here and make it seem like KG has had all the benefits that Duncan has, especially since Kandi man cannot compare to Drob.
