Memphis Grizzlies (3-5) at Golden State Warriors (2-7)

Saturday, November 20, 2004 at 7:30 PM PST
At the Arena in Oakland, CA

Golden State: 4.5 GB (Pacific, 5th place)
Memphis: 4.0 GB (Southwest, 4th place)

Probable Starters:
Memphis Grizzlies
PG Jason Williams
SG Bonzi Wells
SF Shane Battier
PF Pau Gasol
C Lorenzen Wright

Golden State Warriors
PG Speedy Claxton
SG Jason Richardson
SF Mike Dunleavy, Jr.
PF Troy Murphy
C Cliff Robinson

Quick Recaps
The Warriors lost to the Grizzlies by a huge margin, 67-96 when they met about a week ago on November 12. But, the next day they came out and regrouped against the Bobcats and are coming off other more impressive performances. The Warriors stand a better chance to keep this game close, and will definitely look to avenge their earlier blowout. Jason Richardson has scored 27 points each game in his last three games and has raised his scoring average to 18.1 points per game. The rest of the Warriors are also playing decently, and need to play well to beat Memphis. As a side note, Mickael Pietrus is expected to return from his injury, although he will probably get eased back into the games incrementally.

Memphis will be playing a back-to-back after battling with Sacramento. Despite losing James Posey to injury, they still play a 10-man rotation with none of the players getting over 30 minutes a game. Pau Gasol has been the scoring leader on the team at 18.4 points per game, while different members of the team have also stepped up each night to contribute. Still, the Grizzlies have started a bit slower than expected, only winning three out of their eight total games, and going 1-3 on the road.

Key Matchup
Jason Williams & Earl Watson v. Speedy Claxton & Derek Fisher

The Grizzlies point guard combo severely beat the Warriors point guard combo in their last matchup. Jason Williams scored 12 points on 5/8 shooting and dished out 5 assists, while Derek Fisher managed a measly 5 points on 1/12 shooting and dished out two assists and Speedy Claxton was also ineffective. Earl Watson is an underrated backup, as he averages five assists per game in only 20 minutes. This time, Claxton is expected to start, instead of come off the bench, and this time, the Warriors must outplay their counterparts and make a difference in this game.

Prediction
Although the Warriors have displayed better offensive movement in their past three games, they still lack defensive discipline, letting at least one opponent on the other team light them up. Againt the Grizzlies, a team with multiple offensive threats, they will need to minimize the damage. This game will come down to defense, and unless the Warriors reverse their trend, they will have a very hard time winning against Memphis.

After watching the Grizzlies play the Kings, I think the key match up is Stromile Swift vs Robinson. Swift had 23pts and 12 boards or something like that. Every shot was a dunk too. He was awesome. We have to keep him off the glass. Alot of his dunks were put backs. Williams had an impressive game. Bonzi did not play so well.

Warriors will not win Grizzlies, even if there life would depend on it! Don't be hatin'... Me is Warriors suporter, but I think that team needs some kind of boost to get back in the track... Why does GS has souch tereable FG%!? Maybe Montgomery is doing something wrong in pratices. I havn't sean any GS games, but it looks like they are not in shape.

I think GS will win this one. It's pay back. It's up to Jrich though and he will have constant double teams on him. So Dunleavy and Troy better make that ****! Also Claxton has a field day whenever he plays this team.

So when Pietrus was brought on, Biedrens was placed on the injured list? That sucks...

Cheaney..... how can a guy be on the floor for 15 mintues and do nothing, go 1-6, and i thought dunleavy was bad tongiht.

Cheaney should be cut immediately

why oh why is biedrins on the IR while cheaney remains on the team... i see the guy head to the table to check in and i view it as the warriors throwing in the towel for that game

thank goodness for one thing, the energy pietrus brought, after that block i thought we might take off from that

we died by the three tonight and once again nothing in the paint

I think he hit alot of jumpers. I didnt really see the game. I only started seeing the game like with 3 minutes left in the third quarter. He hit a pair of 3 pointers from what i saw a a few jumpers. J-Rich is injured because hes right hand was banged up in the last game when it then was still in jured from a fe games ago. Pietrus was over anctious in his return but, damn the guy looks like a gamer. He still is very overly aggressive on the defensive end resulting in him fouling out. He hit a 3 pointer and splitted 2 freethrows. Pietrus looks very willing to take over from what I see. Maybe when his timing comes back he'll becomea viable scoring option. I've heard Biendrins is on the injured list due to some sort of injury, not just becuase Pietrus came back.

Biedrens is in the IL due to a "hamstring injury". Basically, they took the worst player on the team on the IL so Pietrus could be re-activated...

Pietrus is going to gun for Dunleavy's and Cheaney's job. TCoach has to tell him to lay off the aggression for a little bit, but I like the mentality to make the turnovers and missed shots happen on defense so the W's can go on a run. You don't play defense, you can't go on runs and don't know why the coach put such an odd pairing of the worst defensive players on the floor, at least the Mavs had one or two last year on the floor at all times (Michael Finley, Josh Howard).

It is a shame that we can watch guy's the same age as Biedrins, Iguadala, Deng, Howard, etc... starting for their teams and getting quality experience and minutes while the Warriors always use the overly protective and cautious approach. Instead of wasting time and minutes on guys who are no future benefit for the team such as iguadala taking glenn robinsons place and excelling. Why can't the warriors follow other teams examples?

We might be further along on Dunleavy's learning curve and Pietrus as well. And now we are putting Biedrins on the injured list for a "hamstring injury" uh huh yeah.... I sure wish Calbert Cheaney would get one of those injuries. Why are we wasting time and minutes on guys like Cheaney who is never going to help us in the present or future.

Warriors take a chance for once!!!!!!

I am sure we will make some foolish trade for Jason Kidd and lock up all our money. then like Jermaine O' neal forced Portland and MCgrady forced Toronto....both teams using the cautious approach we will lose Biedrins right as he blossoms

But hey I am sure we can pick up Kapono or some other useless player by then to replace a useless Cheaney

Mmm... This may be a bad news for you then... Our money is already locked up and we probably can resign only one young talent out of Dunleavy, Pietrus, Biedrins or Speedy. And, it seems like Mullin already made up his mind to sign Dunleavy and trade Pietrus if he gets a chance. With this year's signing, average of 38 mils are already locked up...

If the Warriors resign Dunleavy to this big extension at the expense of Pietrus, I am going to become a Denver Nuggets fan since I live here in CO and will never live in the Bay Area again...

You said it, the day that happens I'm becoming a Laker's/Suns fan. I'm about ready to be turning to the dark side since I've had it with Cohan and whatever management he brings in. I bet "the intern" knows more about basketball teams than our GM.
