Offical press release

Quote:

Pacers lose O'Neal for 25 games, Jackson for 30

It appears the Indiana Pacers will pay a heavy price for Friday's embarrassing melee.

Ron Artest has been suspended for the season, while teammates Stephen Jackson received a 30-game suspension, and Jermaine O'Neal, a 25-game suspension, ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Insider Chad Ford have learned.

"The penalties issued today deal only with one aspect of this incident -- that of player misconduct. The actions of the players involved wildly exceeded the professionalism and self control that should rarely be accepted from NBA players," commissioner David Stern said in a statement Sunday.

The Detroit Pistons will be without Ben Wallace for six games.

Indiana's Anthony Johnson also received a five-game suspension.

Eldon Campbell, Chauncey Billups and Derrick Coleman, as the Pacers' Reggie Miller each received 1-game suspensions and $35,000 fines for leaving the bench following the initial altercation between Wallace and Artest.

Whoa. Way unneccesary, Stern has just about single-handedly destroyed the Pacers' season. Sad day for all Pacer fans and I won't be surprised if one of them throws a beer at Stern when he is watching a game at Conseco. Meanwhile, the guy who threw the beer at Artest would probably get 5 nights in jail, and millions in compensations if he sues. Justice?

Exactly. Things might change drastically halfway through the season when O'Neal and Jackson come back. These guys might have a chip on their shoulder and have career years. Meanwhile, Fred Jones takes Artest's starting spot and does as good a job as ever. Even without O'Neal, Artest and Jackson, the Pacers can still hold on to a .500 record until they get back. When JO and SJ do, there might be a huge rally where we see the Pacers grabbing a top four seed in the East. Crazier things have happened.

It doesn't need to assume that, because they won't lose all their games without those guys.

Let's assume they win only 10 of the 30 games Artest misses (a .333 winning percentage seems reasonable, especially considering they'll have O'Neal and Jackson for 10 of those games).

To reach 41 wins, they'd need to win 31 of the 52 other games. Indiana has played 9 of those games already and is 7-2.

Which means, there are 43 Artest-ful games left and they need to win 24 of them.

Win 24 of 43 games with Artest, O'Neal and Jackson there. If they can't do that, they shouldn't be in the playoffs.

If they really are hot during those games, they could even get a 5 seed or something.

(EDIT by SHAPECITY personal attack). You can't you can not go into the stands and hit a innocent spectator! You can't, it is not to happen and this is justice. Fan throwing plastic cup compare that to a professional basketball player hitting a innocent fan, no comparrison. You cannot let this happen again it is not acceptable at all. I can't believe you people would even remotely find this acceptable.

Whoa......I didn't realize Artest was gone for the season....I was basing that off the rumored suspensions...

As was Minstrel in that quote.

    Artest out rest of season

Just watching the Eagles game and the paused to inform the national audience that suspensions have been handed out the by league and Ron Artest is suspended for the remainder of the season.

In my opinion, I think it's a tade bit harsh. But then again, he was swinging at fans that weren't brining any harm to him.

Ron Artest is a basketball player. While he wasn't supposed to go into the stands and beat up a fan, the fan had thrown a beer at him. Was he supposed to do that? Artest never started it, and he gets a heavier treatment. Sprewell choked his coach and got suspended for the season, but Artest just retaliated after being "attacked". Artest's offense was way lighter, but why does he get the same punishment? I seriously think you were the fan who threw a beer at him; any sane person wouldn't enjoy the punishment Artest got for what a purely not his fault.

    Trip you are an idiot.

Attacking innocent fans is not defending himself. HAVENT YOU WATCHED THE REPLAYS?! Artest and Jackson were hitting fans that had nothing to do with the cup throwing innocent.

You are another dillusional thug that seems to think what Artest did was just. It's pathetic.

No punishment is too harsh in this case. Any normal person would be fired instantly from their job for punching customers, provoked or not. Seriously....if a customer shopping in the store I work at threw beer at me, and I responded by punching them and other customers, would I still have a job after it was all over?

Some of you are acting like this guy didn't do anything wrong here.

Its completely his fault for responding in such an insane matter for completly no reason. No the fan isen't suppose to throw a beer but it was plastic cup come on! Show some restrant. Artest in no means was in personal danger, and it was in no way in self defense. He is paid millions to be a role model, going in and attacking a innoicent fan is just something can not do and Stern had to make that point. A less penalty would be unjust. Choking a coach and punching multiple fans is really no difference I may go as far to say punching fans is worse there for he really one got 13 more games then spre.
