The Dolphins agreed to terms with S Travaras Tillman and DE Vonnie Holliday on Friday....terms were not disclosed but I dont imagine they paid a whole lot for either....both deals are for 2 years, id be suprised if either is for even a million a year and Tillman is almost certainly for the vet minimum....these could be productive signings if the price was right, but they are nothing to write home about....
i dont understand why Saban talks about GOING YOUNG....then he signs a horrible Safety, and an old defensive end. We dont need a defensive end! Soon he may sign Kevin Carter or Marques Douglas....i mean our Defensive line is fine! He should try signing Matt Stewart to beef up our linebackers....then Kennoy Kennedy to beef up the defensive backs. Then try for OFFENSIVE LINEMAN.
both of these guys are younger than 30 years old, thats what is meant by young, not 21, but 25-29....thats a guy that is a few years away from seeing a decline because of age...the other thing is money, they are role players that were signed cheap....also, if the defense converts to a 3-4, how many DE do they have? J. Taylor becomes a LB in that situation....David Bowens might move to OLB too....so that leaves no starters....they needed atleast 2 veteran DE's and they got one, they are targeting bigger players that can play the 3-4, so some guys arent big enough, Reggie Hayward was never an option, hes not a 3-4 end....Douglas and Carter would be great, but they are going to command a lot more money that Holliday did, so you likely cant get both....the defensive line is definetly not fine, in fact, if they move to the 3-4, they may not have any of the starters they need yet....the D line is the biggest weakness on the team....all indications are that they are trying to sign Stewart and Kennedy, but they arent going to overpay, thats how you get in trouble, thats why they are in cap hell now....they arent going to sign a veteran o-lineman, they are happy with what they have and I agree with that....the whole line is young, really young and they started to gel at the end of last season....as far as o-lines go, you benefit as much from continuity as you do from talent infusion....be patient, Saban has a plan and he wont deviate....
I like the signings. Tillman started out on fire w/ Buffalo and hopefully he can regain the magic. Holliday IMO is a better than Carter. Vonnie is younger and is equally as versatile. Matt Stewart & Kenoy Kennedy would also be solid acquisitions. Other than Oliver Ross, there is not an OL out there who excites me. It appears that Saban believes in Jimmy Johnson's philosophy about the OL. That is you don't necessarily need a high profile guy just a big nasty mauler i.e. Nate Newton & Larry Allen.
Having McIntosh & Seau redo thier contracts will help. If Miami signs Frerrote to backup A J then all the better.
i read that Green Bay is cutting Darren Sharper. Can u imagine if Miami signed Darren Sharper???? Wow, i can imagine it right now: Holliday, Carter, Bowens, Taylor Seau, Thomas, Stewart Kennedy, Madison, SHARPER, Knight Wow....Miami would be unstoppable on defense!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (DolFan44)</div><div class='quotemain'> Holliday, Carter, Bowens, Taylor Seau, Thomas, Stewart Kennedy, Madison, SHARPER, Knight Wow....Miami would be unstoppable on defense!</div> The problem w/ that line up is you are heavy on the safeties & DE's and are skimping on the CB's and DT's. A more likely line up would be; Holliday, Chester, Bowens, & Taylor on the DE. Zach, Junior, & Eddie Moore @ LB. Poole, Madison, Yeremiah Bell, & Bua in the defensive backfield. Getting back to a previous post, Taylor would be a stretch @ OLB and David Bowens would be darn near improbable. Situationally, its very feasible but overall I doubt it
Knight isnt coming back....you cant play 3 safeties and 1 CB, you also cant play 4 DE's and no DT's or even 3 DE's and 1 DT....it just cant work that way....
Holliday's deal is 2 years at the veteran minimum with a $1 million signing bonus....thats very cap friendly, especially if they have to part ways....there are incentives that could raise the total to $5 million....this is a good deal for him, thats a reasonable price....Kevin Carter is on the verge of signing as well....his agent hopes to have it done by monday....
You can have Sammy Knight, we will take the cap room....I dont really want Sharper either, he wants crazy money for a safety....I like the idea of teaming Bell with Antrel Rolle, drafted #2, of course....
Is Saban planning on turning Jason Taylor into a linebacker or something? They're on the verge of signing Kevin Carter from Tennessee to bookend Holliday.
they just bagged Carter for 5 years....they are considering a move to the 3-4 and standing Taylor up as an OLB....
Considering that Defense was not their problem last year, I am surprised that they are spending the money there. If anything, I think they need a better Offensive Line, and a backup RB.
They will draft a RB and it was a young line that will get better, and let us not forget they did what the eagles couldnt, beat the patriots in the state of florida.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BearsFan1)</div><div class='quotemain'>They will draft a RB and it was a young line that will get better, and let us not forget they did what the eagles couldnt, beat the patriots in the state of florida.</div> What does that have to do with anything?? I think for the Dolphins to win next year, they need to get Oline to protect AJ Feeley, and help him develop. If he has no running game like last year, and spends more time on his ass then a 4 dollar whore, they will have a long season.
They signed Derrick Blaylock, which I think was a good move at RB. With any luck, David Boston will be healthy this year. I'm guessing they'll draft O-Line in the early to mid rounds. I really like what Saban is doing so far. I may have to eat my words...
I thought the Jets signed him to backup Curtis Martin??? http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=roto...owire&type=lgns
