<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Coming off the bench for point guard Steve Francis, Nelson has seen his playing time shrink the past few weeks. Thirteen minutes one night, seven minutes the next. Sixteen minutes another evening, six of those coming in mop-up duty. In the past two games, Nelson has played just five and six minutes. For four years at Saint Joseph's, he started every game and became the school's most celebrated star. "I've never been through anything like this before," he said. </div> Full Story I'm not going to say much yet, I'd rather hear from everyone else - but what do you guys think about Nelson so far this season?
I saw this on Orlando Sentinal.com as well and I think Jameer has been disapointing. He hasen't been able to make his squad better when he is on the floor and he hasn't looked comfortable with his shooting or driving to the basket. He should improve but as for right now, he hasn't been playing great.
The negative - He's tentative, doesn't have a consistent floater, and has taken a couple of really poorly selected shots. The positive - He's a rookie and has protected the ball well (good handler), passes well (we haven't seen enough of this but still does it well), has a few steals on the year already. Give him some time. I think it's too early for the 'disappointing' comments. He hasn't been the player I was expecting, but he's hardly disappointing. He's likely to never to be a star, but will still be valuable nonetheless.

We really cannot say this just yet because he hasn't got the minutes to prove anything. I think the Magic would be better off trading him to another team.
I think Jameer should get somemore playing time especially when Cat it hurt, the Magic can use Francis at his college position at SG and have a backcourt of Francis and Nelson. Too bad this backcourt is very small (Nelson - 5'11" ; Francis - 6'3") but they can use this for 10-15 minutes a game. If they use that lineup for 10-15 minutes per game, let's say the Magic sit Franchise for 5-10 minutes after that, thats 15-20 minutes for Nelson, which should be enough to prove to other teams and the Magic that he is good enough for the NBA.
I personally think Jameer deserves between at least 10-12 minutes a game and 20 at the most. He's a great passer that can get the ball around to an open man with no problem and can penitrate the basket when need be. Only problem I see with him is he hasn't got the floater down yet, since he's so small and everything he could use the floater to his advantage. But he does deserve some more minutes to develop his game more.
Yeah it's gotta be good but on the other hand bad for him. #1 - he gets to play and learn for one of the best. #2 - he doesn't get the PT he was hoping and was used to.
Jameer at this point is going through a stage that every player goes through at some time. He is struggling adjusting to the NBA game and to his new role afte being one of the most dominate if not most dominate player in college bball. I think that eventually his hard working work ethic will help prove he belongs there is no question he will be good in the future in my mind. Question is just how long it will take.
He played pretty good tonight. He was smart when driving in on fast break then taking it back out so they could get a shot off instead of risk another TO
Jameer is a player who will struggle early in his career. It started on how he dropped so low in the draft, now he is stuggling for minutes. This season isnt a dissapointment for him yet, anything can happen.God forbid, Steve Francis could tear his ACL tommrow, then Jameer will get a chance to prove himself as a starting PG.Anyway, he is just going to have to be patient and humble and his time will come when it comes and he will learn in the process.
I don't think Nelson is a good fit for this team. Nelson imo should be starting. He was player of the year which shows alot. Nelson will never become good under Francis' shadow. He's better off somewhere else.
Well, there are a lot of ways to look at the whole thing, but I'll just go ahead and put my two cents in. Jameer is our point guard of the future, it's that simple. There is a reason why Weisbrod drafted this guy. But, right now, he's not quite ready to be a starter - on any team. Don't get me wrong, this guy is a tremendous talent, but he has a lot to learn about the NBA style of play which is much different from college ball - especially college ball at a smaller school (yes, you can argue with me all day, but St. Joes is a small school). So, right now - whether Jameer realizes it or not - he is in the best position he could possibly be in. He's coming off the bench behind one of the better point guards in the league and he is going to spend a lot of time learning from some really good veterans in Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and others. As for his play, he continues to show improvement with every game. Last game that I saw him play in rather extensively, he showed that he was becoming more comfortable shooting the jumper and was running the offense just as good as anybody else on the Magic. Yes, our offense is rather simple, but his leadership and poise are amazing for a rookie. I guarantee you that after a year of sitting back, coming off the bench and being a roleplayer, he is going to be ready to start. Now I know that a lot of guys are thinking that he is going to rot on the Orlando bench for years under Steve Francis, but I really doubt that is going to happen. Eventually, I see Francis moving to the off the ball position of the two guard where he is a better fit for the Magic (if you've noticed, he plays the 2 position a lot nowadays) and Nelson will run the point. As crazy as that sounds, with a running team like the Magic, it'll work wonders. The size won't matter. Jameer has a bright future in Orlando with his fellow rookie Dwight Howard. Also, one last point I would like to make is that a lot of first year point guards have a hard time adjusting to the NBA game, but come out their second year and turn a lot of heads.
Tonight (11/26) against the Hawks, he looks pretty good. So far end of 3rd quarter: 8 mins, 11 pts., 5of7 (two buzzer beaters), and a couple of beautiful floaters.

I think that Jameers struggles dont come souly from adjusting so much to the offensive sets and NBA balls as adjusting to the height of the NBA players. Another thing I dissagree with is calling St. Joe a small school true it use to be a small school, but after being in the tourny every year Jameer was there, going undefeated last season, making it to the elite 8 one basket away from the final four you really can not call them a small school any more. They had two players get drafted in the first round of this years draft, and one of them win College player of the Year. I think that eventually Steve Francis will probably move to the 2 guard spot possibly this year, because of injuries, and we may see Jameer starting. I do not see Steve Francis moving to the 2 as his full time position until either Mobely is traded or leaves via free agency. I hope that Jameer does well in the rest of the season he is doing well tonight real well.
Jameer Nelson got a chance tongiht and took advantage of it. He scored 11 points and played great off the bench. He looked good and let's hope he can keep it up.

I watched the draft, but in essence, we did draft him. More than likely, Weisbrod was in talks with the Nuggets, saw that Nelson had fallen far in the draft and told the Nuggets to draft him in order to trade him to the Magic. There is no reason for the Nuggets to draft a point guard, they're set at that position. That's not the point anyways. And yes, St. Joe's is a small school that plays in a small college conference. Say what you will about how they did in the tourney, but at the end of the day, St. Joe's has a FRACTION of the enrollment of other top schools and far less resources when recruiting. Jameer is going to be good, he's getting better and Francis will eventually end up moving to the two spot full time when JD sees how good Jameer is at running the offense. He'd definitely bring the Magic turnover rates down.
Man I still can't belive the Heat passed him. J Nelson to me would have been a legimate point guard for us.
I still can`t beleive he was drafted so late. Jameer should of been drafted before Telfair hands down.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Hoggamill:</div><div class="quote_post">I still can`t beleive he was drafted so late. Jameer should of been drafted before Telfair hands down.</div> Yeah the Teliair being drafted before Jameer situation was good for both players in my opinion. The Blazers have some of the most talented point guards in the league in there rotation with Damon Stoudamire, and Nick Van Exel Jameer would have been lost in that rotation for at least two years with damon going into free agency this off season I believe he would still be behind Van exel even if Damon was not resigned. In Telfier's case I believe it is something that was planned from the start of the draft. i mean think about it Telfier signed with the addidas company, and there main promoting area, and head quarters is in Portland so having Telfier play there they could offer him more exposer and get more $$$. I am just happy that he was not drafted by the Blazers, because everyone who seems to play for them always has legal issues with drugs, animal abuse, domestic violence you name it someone on that team has been accussed of it.
