How long do you think it will take?

the Mutombo Deal is done. and its about time. This deal has been a concrete thing for a few days now, but nba.com's reports really make it soldified.

Now that we have theoretically assembled our complete team (maybe a few more FA's can be added during the season)... How many seasons do you think it will take till we are a serious contender?

Now be honest on this... don't just think that with Yao and Mac, we've got a championship under our belt. There are still many western teams who are ALOT better than us on paper. Just to repeat the question.. How many seasons till we are a serious contender?

I say about 2 seasons. If T-Mac signs back with us and Yao develops to what he can be! It's all over for the people we play.

I really like Jim Jackson, he can ply the game and so can Bob Sura, And Charlie Ward.

Also look for Mutombo to make some blocks out there and help on deffense when yao is fouling alot.

Just one concern.. our team looks good atm, but obviously not championship good..

what do you think is gonna happen 2 seasons down the track? i don't see Deke, Jimmy, or Ward holding up in 2 seasons time. If u think about it, they are a short term solution to our problems. wat botu the long term?

Long Term Would Be These Players:

    Reece Gaines
    Yao Ming
    Tyronne Lue For Trades.
T-Mac (Monster Deal to keep him though)
    Mo Taylor

I know the short term people will retire sooner or later.or just suck and get traded. But I believe in the rockets that if they play for the love of the game and win and dont give up we can be a championship team!

This trade seems to indicate the Rockets are trying to win in now, not long term.
Mutombo won't be around in two years. Resigning Yao and TMac will be critical,
but they need more. As Adrenaline pointed out, other than those two, the only
long term hopes are in Gaines (who did nothing last year) and Taylor (who did a little).
Not sure why Lue is on there, his 15 minutes is over.

Adrenaline, add Bostjan Nachbar and Malick Badiane to that list and it'll be set. For the long term, our team would definitely consist of two stars (Yao and T-Mac) and role players revolving around them, which is not really a bad thing, because anything more than three superstars will break a team.

Do you think it will be tough financially to keep Yao? Will he give us a hard time during his contract year?

I don't think so. Being Asian of myself, I know a lot of the character that Asians have. We are taught to be loyal and not be greedy, and I doubt that Yao would be greedy. And besides, the most he can get is a max contract, which is what we will give him anyways, so we'll have him if we want to.

False. There's no way the Rockets will ever trade Yao, unless he is in his late 30's already. I picture Yao as a Rocket all his life.

If Yao signs with rockets at lower contract then i bet he's going to want a no trade clause in there.

But I wonder if we really will give him a max contract. Golden State is going to offer everything they can to get him. I wonder if he'll expect us to match it, and if not will he bail?

Well, It depends on our team. If we are flourishing in the playoffs and season then he will definently stay. But if like T-Mac gets his back killed and Yao has to carry the team then gets to what 20-40 wins then he MIGHT bail. You never know. For me I think hes going to stay with the rockets like Hakeem did. I'm Asian too and we azns are full of pride. Not like them other people who only play in the NBA for the $$$ instead.

According to some sources Yao won't get the daylight of free agency, I mean he won't have to go over it as the Rockets would be offering him a contract extension before he plays his fourth year. That would be next year after this coming season. I just hope TMac would not coincide with this by opting out next year to go to free agency and earn more money otherwise the Rockets would be forced to spend a lot of money to preserve their two star players. Anyway TMac would be paid about 15 to 17 million dollars in the last two years of his contract not including the current one. It's already more than enough. It would be greed if he wants some more beside he's(TMac) still young between 27 and 28 y/o by the time his contract expires. I expect Yao to be considerate enough not be a financial burden for the Rockets although he deserves a decent contract. He's already blessed with a lot of commercial endorsements. I heard that he's planning to do a movie too in China. I think I read that article posted on Clutchfans site few months before the Olympics. He's a man with good asian values.

To be on track with the main topic. It depends on the team chemistry. This will gauge their performance and chances for the playoffs. We already have good role players and if they play their best in supporting Yao and TMac, we do have chances to advance in the playoffs. Another thing that will be a factor in our team's success is efficient passing to lessened turnovers. The Rockets have been one of the last teams in assists and one of the first in turnovers. I just hate to see them waste a lot of opportunities for easy baskets. The biggest challenge for the Rockets this coming season is to beat the Spurs because they swept us last season and we haven't won a single game in San Antonio(I mean in their home arena) ever since Duncan played there. Although Sacramento swept us also last season we'll have a greater chance to beat them or to be even with them due to the loss of some of their team chemistry especially with the loss of Vlade.

As for the future aside from TMac and Yao, I had high hopes for Boki, Gaines, Badiane and Spanoulis. Hopefully they'll meet our expectations for them.

The Houston Rocket's seem like a Chinese controlled team now. The team has been in the eye of a country of over 1 billion people. As long as Yao keeps on improving and playing consistently the way he's been playing the Rockets have every intention of keeping him till he retires. Is it just a mere coincidence that the rockets changed their uniforms to all red like the Chinese flag? I think not. The Chinese fans have a huge influence on everything Rockets as long as Yao is there, and they are receiving international attention and with that comes alot of money. It's all about the big bucks.

I've voted as well. Are they still allowing only one vote in a 24 hour period, like in previous years?
