The comment was apparently picked up by a courtside microphone by the LA television station KTLA and the Timberwolves? broadcast on KSTC television in Minnesota.

VP of basketball communications for the NBA, Tim Frank, said league senior vice president Stu Jackson is reviewing the tape. No decision regarding punishment will be made before Tuesday.

This is Sprewell?s second incident in as many months. Last November, Mr. Sprewell received a misdemeanor citation after arguing with a police officer during a traffic stop. </div>

I know the players have to work and hold a higher regards because they are professionals, but damn can we go a week without a "fan" doing something and crying if there are ramifications? I heard what he said, but other players cuss more and worse....where are the psychologist-hugging please-don't-yell I-made-a-boom-boom fans then? It gets ridiculous.

I dont think this has anything to do with the fan getting mad/whining in the aftermath. It's an issue of Spree getting caught for doing something he shouldn't have been doing.

I'm not surprised that Spree got suspended for a game for this. After the Pistons/Pacers brawl, the NBA needs to draw a sharp line between fans and players. Spree was just the first guy to react.
But, what I want to know is what the woman said to him, cause if she was vulgar to him, then he has every right to retaliate. Buying a ticket doesn't give you the right to be obscene.
In all honesty, if the NBA doesn't want this stuff to get on TV, back the microphones off.

EDIT: ESPN's Bill Simmons, a Clippers season ticket holder, apparently had a pretty good view of this. If he's accurate, sounds like Spree might have been out of order. You can read about it here.

Next on the news..."NBA commish David Stern, who seems to have a lot less hair nowadays, institutes a month of team therapy & anger management nights for the entire league." [IMG]

I never really liked Sprewell, but if that account is true then he's a major-league asshole. He must really have some weird issues with verbal criticism.

There were children. You should never use that kind of language around kids. It doesn't help the NBA's image right now and will get suspended because the fans are complaining about it and it was broadcast on television.

Spree really needs to start thinking before he lets his mouth go off.

But I don't get all the anger about him being especially wrong because he said what he did with children nearby. Of course I understand that no parent wants their child to be exposed to conflicts like that. I can also imagine that having Spree's crazy eyed psycho face yelling something (let alone profanities) can be startling, but lets not say it's because of the language that he used. "Suck my D%$" ? I doubt children have never been exposed to their share of profanities, not only in the media, but through the NBA and other professional sports. Just watching the games on tv one can read the profanities coming off the lips of players as clear as day. If not that then snippets of "Oh S*%T" and "F*%$" can be heard. I haven't been fortunate enough to attend a live game yet, but I imagine it can be heard from stands as well? [IMG]

He was probably responding to a rude comment with his own rude comment. I perosnally think that this whole thing that players need to be "professional" and ignore the fans just makes them sitting ducks for fan heckling and things like that wich happpened in the Pacers/ Pistons game. At the end of the day these people are professionals, but theya re also human beings who will not be insulted and just sit there and take it.

Although it was a bad reaction on Sprewell's part, it was wrong to have him suspended. Maybe a fine at the most, but even that sends a message to fans (whether the message was intentional or not) that the League will punish players who respond to the heckling and abuse from fans, as with Indiana/Detroit. I think that's disrespectful to the players who are told they have to be professionals, and it's degrading for the players on a personal level as well. I know the league felt they had to issue a punishment, as the incident comes at a time of negative media attention for the NBA and professional sports, but I sympathize with the athletes a bit.

Its only a one game suspension. Iam shock David Stern didnt overeact since it was involving a fan. I think given the black eye the league has right now, he had to get atleast 1 game. The NBA is trying send a clear message to players, "No Player must get involved in the Back & Forth with Spectators". even if you disagree that is the approach David Stern must take from now on, so their isnt even a risk of repeat from fight night friday a few weeks ago.

The Wolves could have used him tonight tho..after Cassell pick up those 2 early fouls. He never really got into the game against Dallas. And thats usally Sprewells role to step up & pick up the slack. Wally try to but it doesnt have the same impact as Sprewell stepping up. Anyway, one game isnt that bad.

It's all about setting an example. I think Stern and Co. are thinking that they need to hit this type of situation hard so it'll make players think twice about these things in the future. I don't agree with the suspension, but I also thing Spree always handles situations like a thug. He has a long history of reacting badly and that is probably why he was hit with a one gamer.

Another sorry incident at the end of a game, with the road team winning. I watched the game on league pass and was [IMG]. I thought he yelled at a male fan. I didnt know it was a female heckler then and was going nuts why the hell would he say that to a male fan.

how do we expect the players to be professional when they dont play in a professional atmosphere. I know that ur not a spree fan and im not either but when is the NBA gonna protect its players from harrassing treatment. The fans are allowed to say rude comment and the players arent? Arent they all adults? this isnt a corprate atmosphere its hostile. you cry about kids hearing suck my d***. But they hear worse from their fellow fans. If your gonna boot the players start booting the fans too.

fans do get booted. alot. especially if they are reported to securtiy or to someone in the stadium/arena they are in. I have seen it happen numerous times, fans escorted out of the stands for this very thing.

    there were kids around??
with all the ghetto personalitys in the NBA
if your going to sit near the court you will hear profanity
i hear "Ahh Sh*t" and "*****" all the time just watching it on TV, david stern should put Parental Advisory stickers on all tickets if this is a problem. And alot of times wen the fan yell at players, they are using profanity themselves

This is not an issue of "ghetto personalities" so don't even go there. I'm from a neighborhood that is as suburban as it gets, and there was plenty of profanity in high school, on the bball court, everywhere.
