<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> The Magic (13-9) have been looking for another veteran point guard since the season began, trying to pry away one by using DeShawn Stevenson as possible trade bait. They are hoping to land someone such as Howard Eisley (Utah), Eric Snow (Cleveland), Anthony Carter (Minnesota) or Tony Delk (Atlanta) as a reliable veteran backup for Francis. </div> Full Story An update on Cato's shoulder is also included, he doesn't expect to play before Christmas. I always wondered why we gave up Darrell, he is the PG they are searching now. I don't want Eisley nor Carter, and I doubt we get Snow or Delk.
The reason we let Armstrong walk was because he wanted a 6 year contract, but the Magic felt at his age he could not last healthy another sixe years so the max they wanted to offer him was a three year deal. Armstrong did not want that so he walked. I think that if we honestly wanted him back though at this point it is very possible we can get him away from the Mavs. Orlando trades: Andrew DeClercq (No games yet played in 2004/05) Orlando receives: PG Darrell Armstrong (8.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.2 apg in 26.5 minutes) Change in team outlook: +8.5 ppg, +3.2 rpg, and +4.2 apg. Dallas trades: PG Darrell Armstrong (8.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.2 apg in 26.5 minutes) Dallas receives: Andrew DeClercq (No games yet played in 2004/05) Change in team outlook: -8.5 ppg, -3.2 rpg, and -4.2 apg. TRADE ACCEPTED Due to Orlando and Dallas being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Orlando and Dallas had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now as far as those choices listed go. i think that Carter is not in our best intrest to sign him. He is over aged he is not even good enough to play vetern minutes these days his body just cant handle it any more and will eventually break down he should have retired when his agent messed up his deal with Miami, but he didnt. Tony Delk is a bit out of our reach in my mind he is the only option the Hawks really got at this point at point guard so I do not see them trading him. If we aquired him he could put up some decent numbers though so I would like that to go down, but it wont. Eisely just would be a horrible pick up. I watched him play in NY on MSG a lot of times I hated the guy. He is a player who is really less than a average player he is no leader on the floor and really had no court vision when playing with the Knicks. Snow would be the best possible choice. He is a vetern player, but out of those listed his talent is at the highest level. He can still start and perform very well if a injury were to happen to Mobely or Francis. He is a little still in our range considering that the Cavs really dont need him that much since they have Mclinnis. They would want more than just Stevenson though i return I would think. I personally think that we should not go after another point guard. It would mean that Jameer would get even less minutes than he is now considering he only gets like around a average of 10-15 minutes a game that would not be a good choice. It would hinder his confidence in his game and maybe cause some bad blood between him and and management due to lack of playing time.
^Nelson is my biggest concern as well. The reason Orlando is looking for a PG is, that we just don't have anyone in case Francis get's injured. And I don't see us getting Darrell again, Dallas wanted him and they need him even more than we would need him at the moment. Speaking of Darrell, I heard a different story, what I heard was that Doc wanted that he leaves because in his eyes it was time that T-Mac stepped up and become the true leader on the floor, we all now how this ended. Anyway, why would Darrell accept a two year deal in New Orleans when he could have got a three year deal with us? But I don't want to turn this thread into a Darrell Armstrong discussion. Now with your other opinions on the PGs, I think you're quite right about it. But on a second thought, I don't want Snow either, he is already 31 and has a contract until 2008/2009 where he'll make 7.3 Million Dollar, just a bit too much I think.
To say the truth, I don't even believe that the Magic should go after someone like Armstrong to back up Franchise. Steve Francis will play 40 minutes every night, and with Armstrong, you have to put him in for more than 8 minutes. That will force the Magic to play with a much smaller lineup. Let Jameer Nelson back up Francis right now; he can't make too many mistakes in just 8 minutes...
I'm curious as to why they don't use Hill and Mobley as point backup... If they do get a veteran 1, Nelly in Orlando is pretty much over......

Then with the Hornets orginization he didnt demand a long contract because he new he wouldnt start, and felt he had not really proved anything to the orginization. In the end it was all about respect. Anyway back to the original point of the thread with Snow he got suspended by the Cavs for one game, and after a side line arguement with head coach Paul Silas maybe Silas will push for him to get traded. It sounds like both sides dont want to be together right now over a miss understanding. It could benefit the Magic. Jameer Nelson should be our only option at backup point guard imo. He is our future at that position if Mobely leaves this off season we will likely move Francis to the 2 and start Nelson. So we need him to be ready to take that role. For him to be ready he needs experence which he can only get by playing.

His skills are improving every game (he had 4 really nice steals tonight among other nice plays). He's getting more and more used to the transition to the NBA in the most difficult position for a rook (pg). He's visibly more confident controlling the ball each night. I immensely respect the job he's doing as having been a pg myself for most of my playing career.

In the ball game, 1 minute can already create many mistakes, not even mention 8 minutes... 1 mistake in a game can cause you lose the whole game. See what Brown have done recently? I like Nelson, and he is playing quite well at the moment. He's improving in every games. I also hope that Magic wont acquire any players for backup pg, i want Nelson to take part in more games, to grow up and to learn more. This is a best chance to learn while playing beside mobley and hill on the court at the same time. If only have to choose...Delk might be the best I think...
^You're right, Orlando is only looking for someone to replace Francis in case he gets injured, and they want of course someone who can be the starter for some games, he needs to be able to distribute the ball well, get some rebounds and some steals. Personally I don't think this is what Darrell can but he is a proven starter and he could also mentor Nelson. From the one mentioned, Delk and Snow seem to be the best choices but Atlanta needs Delk and Snow has, considering his age, a too big contract. This could effect of course Nelson's development but I think Francis needs some more rest during the regular season games, so he has enough energy left for the playoffs.
I too agree with the pg situation the Magic need someone who can really step up when they are called so far Nelson has done that. He has so much energy and can steal very well. What i hoped the Magic would get is maybe a sg or a sf ex: Anthony Peeler of the Wizards he is a vet and a good player he is benched as washington has there big 3. Another is my favorite Magic player ever Penny Hardaway he shows in games with NY that he can find people open and give them there shot he also is a vet and a fan fav, he would look good on his comeback to the Magic The problems getting them are Peeler is the Wizards go to clutch 3 point shooter off the bench so maybe deshawn and bradly for him. Penny was offered in the deal with Crawford to get Vince to NY which was a good deal but Raptors blew it, but anyways Penny is looking like the Knicks had no problem offering him up when a trade between a healthy 2nd-1st best ppg Crawford on the knicks to a Carter 15ppg Raptors. Another was Eddie House but I see Denver is getting the slow act on it and maybe could have helped during the Melo injury.
