Throughout this whole season, Tracy McGrady hasn't been adjusting very well and is not a star player that you base your offense around this year
I actually believe that Tracy has adjusted fairly well, and that there is only so much adjusting that he can do with the personel and the coach/system that the Rockets currently posess. A negative I want to bring up is that Tracy looks to pass TOO much when he's in scoring position. I'd say at least a couple times per game this season, Tracy has had a perfectly make-able layup or possible dunk, and instead decided to dump the ball of to Yao, who can't catch a pass in such close proximity. When he gets anywhere near the rim, he needs to SCORE.
I agree with you Sniper. Tracy is a scorer and helps his team best when he is taking open shots and making them. He should not worry about getting guys involved when he's hot. One thing I feel Tracy needs to do more of is to take the ball to the rack. When he drives, he usually gets easy baskets or free throws, and it opens up our perimeter shooters, and also takes attention away from Yao in the post.
Tracy likes to drive to the basket, and thats what I want him to do. However many times when he gets to the basket and the paint is closed off he throws up a wild shot. He should be passing in those situations.

However, when he throws up those wild shots, he usually gets to the foul line since basically makes the defenders look like they mauled him. Another negative that I think McGrady has is inconsistent shooting. Sometimes, when he has the ball with an open shot, he just misses it. That should be a high percentage shot for most guard players in the NBA. This probably also has a lot to do with shot selection, so you can't really blame him for it. He really shouldn't be out there taking those shots, but instead should be driving. (This was already mentioned above). Some the one minor problem that I have with him is shot inconsistency. One night he lights us up with 30 points, and others he gets to the low teens.
Thats true, but when he cant get the foul call its just a missed opportunity, if he passes it off or attempts to he'll still get the foul call. Tracy also has the tendency to launch up a shot early in the shotclock, in that situation he should hold the ball. Ive seen him take shots on fast breaks, he should slow it down, especially when we're in the lead.
He could lower the amount of three's attempted. Sometimes it just feels like it's a one pass and shoot game with him, when he should be catching the ball and driving the lane for a layup of dish to set a teammate up.
I agree with someone's opinion in that Tracy needs to drive to the whole on fast breaks instead of pulling up for a three with 20 seconds left on the shot clock. His inconsistency is also a big knock right now. For example, he can go 1-10 from three one night and have a game like the San Antonio one the night after. He needs to be more inconsistent, and that should come with time and experience.
Consistency and penetration...two weaknesses for T-Mac. <font color="Red">By the way, for the Rockets fans...thank you for keeping the thread mature and making for a great discussion. I really appreciate it.</font>
Yeh hes not very consistent, sometimes he explodes and can score a lot but other time he is just cold. He sometimes doesn't want to take the shot during clutch times.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting infra.ORANG3:</div><div class="quote_post">Yeh hes not very consistent, sometimes he explodes and can score a lot but other time he is just cold. He sometimes doesn't want to take the shot during clutch times.</div> That's wrong. Tracy is always the guy that wants the ball during clutch situations, and the only times he passes the ball down the stretch is when he is double-teamed and a teammate has a better chance of making an open shot. If it's an one-on-one situation, Tracy will take the final shot.
Trip you have a typo you stated that he should be more inconsistent , just catching your mistake. Tracy sees the floor at an all-star level. However he can be inconsistent at recognizing mismatches. Ive seen him pop up a three pointer when theres a 6'10 power forward on Yao. He has to dish those to Yao because he usually has that deep position against those kinds of undersized opponents.
Better shot selection, many times he's to eager to launch up the three as opposed to getting a better shot, he has one of the best handles for an off guard, especially at 6'9, and he can really get in the lane at will. Defense is another concern area for Mcgrady, he has the athleticism and length, but not the determination to be a good defender, and he could be one heck of a defender if he wanted to. Lobbying for a new coach that will use him and Yao better is also one of his flaws He also needs to learn how to pick his spots, he sometimes shoots when he should be pasing, but one of the best things about him is that he doesn't make too many mistakes in terms of keeping possesion of the ball, he's very good at that.
Yeah, shot selection and inconsistency are the main problems in his game this season. Like everyone said, he needs to shut the urge to just go for the 3 and drive more or look for the open team mate (which he does). He also hasnt been that consistent this year in his scoring like he was with Orlando. But things are getting better as he has scored a lot more in the past few games.
My two cents. Tracy McGrady, needs to slash more. He's got his fadeaway and midrange down. I think he should to more pump fakes and take it downlow and dunk it or pass it while in the paint. That would create a few WIDE OPEN shots. I really think everything is ok about him.
The thing I hate about these threads, is it's asking for negatives in a players game. But you have to consider that some of these guys just don't have specific parts in their game. Ex: Asking for better defense. (Of course theres always room for improvement). He's instant on offense and can kill any team if he's hot. I've seen him play enough in Orlando, and I know what he's capable of doing. But people get him for his lack of D. It's near impossible to be the top defender and offender at the same time. He's no Ron Artest but can Artest drop 40 a game like it's nothing? No. It's a double standard. He can improve on D, because no one is perfect, but I wouldn't consider that a flaw in his game. If anything, he's underrated on defense because he's so well known for his offense. Honestly, I think the only thing he needs to work on is his attitude. I'm not a McGrady fan and he was very frustrating at times in Orlando. He's known for putting down his teammates, and his lack of leadership. He's still young, but I think he needs to work on the vocal things rather than his actual game. IMO, if he improved his attitude, everything in his game would elevate to another level. He could work on his clutch play, but that comes with age and experience - which is something he's slowly gaining.

Both these guys led the league in scoring and were also recipients of DPOY's. McGrady surely is no Jordan, but could we knock on him for not being Mike? Hell, it's impossible to be what Michael Jordan was. Therefore, I agree with you.
