Has anyone here ever heard of Manute Bol? I never heard of him until I saw this tribute to him on NBA TV. He was a decent basketball player but, he showed so much courage off the court. Him and Chris Mullin. It almost made me cry watching it But, has anyone other than me not heard of him?
Yes of course he use to play NBA but I forgot waht team. He is 7ft 7 inches tall. And i think he is from Sudan. Last time I saw him was on celebrity boxing.
The Warriors and Sixers and I think Clippers. Man his life sory is just amazing. For me it was a 1/2 hour well spent.
He was in a serious car accident a few months back that almost took his life. My guess is that he's still rehabbing from that..
Yea iv'e heard about him. Iv'e seen a few old games that he played in on Sportscentury. notMuchgame is right. He had a car accident this summer and started rehab a few weeks after the accident and is still in it.
I believe he spent most of his career in Golden State. He was taller and lankier than Yao, but had this wierd looking sling-shot 3 pointer that actually went in. I really wanted to see the special on him, but I missed it. He made his money in the NBA, but gave all of it away to charity for his home country of Sudan. When he got in the accident, he didn't have much money cause he gave it all away, so he is having trouble with his medical expenses, I believe he can't afford some surgery that he needs. Really sad but inspriing story. I am glad to see the NBA starting to take up his cause, but seriously, with the amount of money guys in the league make these days, it should be NOTHING for these guys to raise the money Bol needs. This guy gave away everything he had, and I really think today's players can learn something from his selflessness, on and off the court. It could start by helping the guy pay for his medical costs.
Manute Due to the lack of correct information about Manute Bol I have decided to write a brief biography on him. He was born in 1962 in Sudan. In 1983 the then San Diego Clippers drafted the 7 foot 7 inches player in the 5th round of the NBA Draft back when there still was a 5th round. He decided to stay in Bridgeport, a division II school and in 1985 the Washington Bullets drafted him. (contrary to the rules today a player who is drafted but not signed can be drafted again in later years.) He spent three years with the Bullets and he averaged a block every five minutes of game time. He is considered on of the best shot blockers of all time. His lanky frame, 185 when he entered the league, limited him becuase he couldn't guards the more physical PF or Cs. He went on to play for the Sixers, Warriors and Heat over the next 7 years and in 1995 he retired. After he was finished in the NBA he attemptedd to play in Qutar and Italy but had to retire because he had Rheumatism which is similar to arthritis. He was very charitable giving almost all the money he had earned from the NBA back to his countrymen in Sudan. The Islamic government in SUdan took him hostage in 2001 for supporting a group that went against their beliefs. He escaped to Egypt (there he ran a basketball school and one of his pupils was Leol Deng of the Bulls) and then came back to the U.S. He practacies poligamy and has four wives. He has raised money for his countrymen by appearing on Celebrity Boxing, in the Central Hockey League on SNL and on the Man Show. On June 30th 2004 Manute was hospitilized following a car accident. Because he gave his money to his felllow Sudanese he had no money left to even pay his hospital bills. His former teammates Chris Mullin, Tim Hardaway and Mitch Richmond are running a fantasy camp to raise the money for Monute's hospital bills. He has Just recently been able to walk again but is still hospitalized.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting mrj18:</div><div class="quote_post">Don't they have this Manute Bol foundation?</div> Warriors fantasy RunTMC camp was raising money for Bol. Some people got to go to a camp with Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Mullin.
man manute bol was the man. to bad he had that car accident if i had enough money i would give it to him!
