in the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have decided to select Utah QB Alex Smith with the #2 pick in the draft, if hes not selected #1....Saban has apparently decided hes the "best player available"....However, the story also said that Jon Gruden is completly nuts over Smith, and the Bucs and Dolphins are talking trade that woudl exchange the teams 1st round picks(2nd and 5th overall)....the chart teams use indicates that the cost to move from 5th to 2nd is a 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder....if that scenario came true, I would be thrilled....at 5, you still get a good player, and you get those extra picks....I dont think the compensation will be quite that high, but I do think the Bucs love of Smith will be tested, because Saban isnt going to give the pick away....I also suspect that Saban may be sending out a smoke screen about Smith to tempt the Bucs or another team into a trade....

why would Saban say right now we are going for Smith? Now the 49ers might "steal" him and leave us with Aaron Rodgers. Do u think Rodgers is better than Smith???

but if Tampa DOES give us their #5, 2nd and 3rd rounders...id PROBABLY do it. Benson/Brown/Williams would still be left, so we'd take them. In the 2nd round id choose David Baas immediately. With our earliest 3rd rounder id choose Frye/Campbell/McPherson (whoever is left)...then with our later 3rd rounder id take Shazor or another big SS. This draft has MANY great OL prospects, so i hope we dont pass up on them. In the 4th id take Chris Spencer or Elton Brown. Then again, in the 5th round take Albert Means and then in the 7th try for a tight end.

It may or may not be a smokescreen, but why not if that is your guy. 49ers are in control to get who they want. If Miami decides they want Smith, it will not change the 49ers mind.

If TB is truly interested in moving up to #2 for Smith, nothing will get done before Miami is on the clock, other than maybe some hypothetical talk between the two teams.

Personally, I think it would be good for Miami to pick up some extra picks, and this is a good way to see who is serious about QBs and moving up to get them.

dont forget that if Tampa Bay gives us their 1st, 2nd, AND 3rd...we may also get a 2nd rounder for Patrick Surtain from Kansas City, giving us even more picks

I think Tampa would be really stupid to trade to get Alex Smith. They have so many other problems and holes to fill and their cap situation is crap. If you sign a QB with a Top 5 pick, you're going to have to pay through the nose.

I think they should take a franchise RB and stick with Griese and Simms.
