Stop Rebuilding & Start Reloading
The Warriors need to get out of this mindset they've been stuck in for the last decade, "Time to Rebuild." The Warriors have had plenty of talent to build a team, but they have been impatient and panic forcing them to start over. The Warriors have two players, J-Rich & Murphy, having career years for them. The reason why they have chemistry with one another and are finally breaking out is because they have had 4 years to work on it. The Warriors need to make the commitment to build around these two players by surrounding them with the right role players. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they have been through many coaching changes, so it's hard for any GM to get the right personnel in. Losing Musselman set the team back to square one, so now Mullin and Montgomery need to work on a game plan to find players to fit Montgomery's system.

1. Start reloading the team around JRich and Murphy.

What is Montgomery's System?
No one seems to be able to answer this question. Is he even the right coach for this team? I found this article offering a critique of Montgomery while he coached for Stanford, link After reading it you don't have much confidence in his ability to adapt to the NBA. Here's another great article breaking down Monty's challenge link

Montgomery's strongest assets is his ability to teach and develop players. I think the approach works better at the college level, because at the pro level most players aren't willing to make the effort.

Second change would be to make Rod Higgins the head coach and keep Monty around as an assistant or as a scout.

Start playing the rookies
This is going to be the toughest challenge for the Warriors. They need to forget about being competitive, and just start their younger players. The Warriors have to set a long term goal of 3 years before the franchise can turn around. So for the next 3 years they need to have JRich-Murphy-Pietrus-Dunleavy-Biedrins logging heavy minutes. JRich and Murphy can shoulder most of the scoring for this team, while Pietrus and Biedrins can anchor the defense. They can experiment running the offense through Dunleavy because of his passing and vision. Let these guys grow their game together and use the veterans to come off the bench.

This approach worked for the Bulls and they are finally reaping the benefits of it. Originally they tried to mix their rookies with veterans, and it just didn't work. They brought in Rose, Pippen, AD, and a few other players to compliment Curry & Chandler and it turned out to be a disaster.

PG - Dunleavy/Felton/Fisher
SG - JRich/Chaeney/Fisher
SF - Pietrus/Najera
PF - Murphy/Frye
C - Biedrins/Foyle

On defense Pietrus and Dunleavy can switch when necessary. The veterans can earn more playing time by making an impact on defense.

The Warriors will have a void at backup PF and the need for a speed guard. They can address both via the draft. I would like to see them draft Raymond Felton (1st Rnd) and Channing Frye (2nd Rnd).

The Warriors could package a combination of Speedy/Robinson or Speedy/Davis for a forward with a good perimeter game or future draft picks. Someone like Hedo, Korver, Jumaine Jones, James Posey, or James Jones would be a nice fit.

Wow, good post Shpae, I agree with most of what you are saying. I think that the point guard problem will be adressed during the draft and that Speedy will be gone and we could do something like this

Golden State trades: PG Speedy Claxton (12.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 5.9 apg in 32.3 minutes)
Golden State receives: SF Luke Walton (1.7 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 1.0 apg in 8.6 minutes)
PG Tierre Brown (3.9 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 2.1 apg in 13.5 minutes)
SF Jumaine Jones (6.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 0.8 apg in 22.6 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -0.6 ppg, +4.5 rpg, and -2.0 apg.

L.A. Lakers trades: SF Luke Walton (1.7 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 1.0 apg in 8.6 minutes)
PG Tierre Brown (3.9 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 2.1 apg in 13.5 minutes)
SF Jumaine Jones (6.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 0.8 apg in 22.6 minutes)
L.A. Lakers receives: PG Speedy Claxton (12.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 5.9 apg in 32.3 minutes)
Change in team outlook: +0.6 ppg, -4.5 rpg, and +2.0 apg.

TRADE ACCEPTED

Due to Golden State and L.A. Lakers being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Golden State and L.A. Lakers had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

We waive or trade Brown. The new lineup after we get Felton and Raymond Frye in the draft:

PG: Mike Dunleavy/ Raymond Felton/ Luis Flores
SG: Jason Richardson/ Luke Walton
SF: Mickael Pietrus/ Jumaine Jones/ Luke Walton/ Zarko Cabarakapa
PF: Troy Murphy/ Channing Frye/ Eduardo Najera
C: Andris Biedrins/ Adonal Folye

IR: Derek Fisher (Or trade him instead of Speedy in trade above)

We let Davis go via free agency and look what we have, a new reloaded line-up. Andris Biedrins will have a chance to play, Mickael Pietrus will get his well deserved starting spot. Dunleavy takes over PG for the reason he is bigger than most PGs and that this is his natural postition. J-Rich and Murphy keep on being what they have been this year, and we have a team [IMG]

Jumaine Jones would start over Pietrus at this point if we got him. You might like him. I may be in the minority, but I think he's the type of player we need on the roster.

All I wish for is the Warriors to play a little more D.

^Yeah, really, it's messed up. Dunleavy is screwing up his shots and passes all the time and that is getting annoying. J-Rich is playing with leadership, passion, and heart. Dunleavy is playing with laziness

Well I'll defend Dunleavy in that his team skills are needed at the forward position when Pietrus is kind of wild out there and Cheaney just plain sucks as a passer. But Barnett over-praises Dunleavy way too much. Frankly, it's annoying for telebroadcasters to play favorites, especially when his favorites don't even match up with at least the majority of fans out there who are like, "WTF? Why does he get all the attention out of this out of touch old fart?". Dunleavy just doesn't deserve the attention he's getting. He does things that are underappreciated like passing and playing smart. Fine, so do many role players in the league. Can't even watch games with the sound on anymore. I mean have these punks ever commentated during a winning season? If not, they need to go as soon as we do start winning because maybe we'll get better talent in terms of color commentating.
