What do you think of Doc's performance as C's head coach so far this season? Before this season started, most of us set out goals of winning 40-45 games. At 18-20, we are still very much on pace to attain that goal, especially once you consider that the toughest part of our schedule is behind us. Here are a few of my thoughts. Pros +I think Doc is a great motivater and mind-guy. Him letting some of the vets run practices etc. I think really got guys to buy into him. Also, his benching the starters in last week's game was also a risky and gutsy, but ultimately great move. +He's a players coach, and he keeps guys happy. This is most evident in the way he has been with GP. After failing to report post-trade, Doc has been great to GP, allowing him to take time off to be with his family. And in return, GP has been amazing for this team. Ironically, Doc was also the main reason Blount re-singed with the Cs, something we all regret now. +He's been much better with our rookies than OB. Him and his staff are doing a great job developing them and giving them confidence. +He said he wanted the team to run, and he got them to do it. Cons +I'm still not sold on him as a coach ON THE COURT. His rotations and subsitution are sometimes questionable. Many examples, i.e. playing Waltah during crunch time, not playing Perk more, putting in ALL our young guys on the floor at the same time with no vet leadership, etc. +Inconsistency with his rotation. He said before the start of the season that he thinks players play better when they know how much PT they will get. But he has been fairly inconsistent handing out PT, especially to guys like Waltah, Perk, Banks, at times Raef and Blount. +Took him a while to catch on that he needed to focus on Defense during practice. +Is he not hammering basic philosophies to his team during practice? You know, BOXING OUT and the like? What do you all think? How do you like him so far?
I find it hard to rate Doc as a game coach, because with so many young guys in our rotation, he may be sending in the right plays and they may not be experienced enough to excecute them. I don't have any problems with him between games because the team is saying all the right things, most squabbles are kept in-house and guys are coming around to the running game. My biggest issue with Doc is, like you said, rotations. It took him a really long time to make the move of Ricky to the 6th man role, something that should have been done a couple weeks earlier. And now, its obvious that Blount needs a kick in the pants to get rolling again and maybe sitting him on the bench, starting Jefferson and moving LaFrentz to center would provide that type of kick. Whatever he's saying in practice isn't getting through. How quickly he does something with Blount will go a long way in my final grade and keep in mind I'm a notoriously hard grader, but for now I'd give him a solid -B.
Obviously in over his head. Makes subs that dont make AnY Sense. and refuses to make subs when wwe need them. Once he puts in the second unit you know hes going to keep them in for the exact same amount of time each night no matter how good or bad they are. Its almost as if he could give a care in the world how the actual game is going. He also has a riduculous double standard. He makes some guys (Allen, Perk) earn their minutes and juist keeps playing some guys who dont (Blount, Banks) when they should see a lot more time on the bench
