Anyone else see this on ESPN? Phil Jackson was asked about filling in for Lenny Wilkins after his resignation from the Knicks head coaching position.

The reason I'm posting this here is because it brings an interesting scenario into play.

LET ME SAY THAT I DO NOT THINK IT WOULD EVER HAPPEN...but I figured a discussion thread wouldn't kill anybody.

So what if somehow the Rockets pursued Jackson, and Van Gundy made his way back to New York, which he loves to death? It seems as though Van Gundy would be happy, and I think Jackson would much rather coach a star guard/center combo as opposed to the situation they have in New York right now. Impossible? Perhaps. Intriguing? I think so.

If Phil Jackson signs on with the Knicks as an interim coach, and Van Gundy leads the Rockets to another first round loss, would you push for the Rockets to go after Jackson in the summer?

    Discuss.

Get over it, Phil Jackson isn't worth it. He isn't worth firing JVG, it isn't worth giving Yao doubts about the Houston franchise with his third coach in 4 years.

Regarding Phil Jackson, we're playign alot better now so I don't think we should really change anything, we've beaten alot of top teams, imagine if Phil came and we did worse?

Keep this thread on topic. We're not turning into a bookstore.

As for the idea Sniper, I have to agree that it is very intriguing. You can't say that us Rockets fans don't want a coach as acclaimed as Jackson to take over, but I doubt it would happen. Van Gundy will probably stay as Rockets coach for years to come.

I think getting jackson will be easy, we are competitors and a center gaurd combo. This team has turned around though, we look like real competitors but i think that yao would maybe actually be more succesful under jackson. i would loose JVG right away if we dont make the playoffs this year.

    Phil Jackson - Head Coach

Jeff Van Gundy - Asst. Head Coach

If this could happen that would be nice. Have Phil do offence and Van Gundy do defense.

I simply presented a hypothetical scenario and requested people's thoughts on it.

That said, I don't see how the change in coaches would give Yao any doubts about the organization. Van Gundy was brought in only because Rudy T. developed cancer, and IF Phil Jackson replaced Van Gundy next season, it would be because he's got NINE rings. If anything, Yao would probably flourish under Jackson, a man whose trademark is somehow getting players to achieve their maximum potential, and obviously has experience and a history of success in a system based around a skilled center and 2-guard.

So, I'm NOT saying that Van Gundy needs to get the axe, however, if we get knocked from the playoffs without a fight in the first round, or miss the playoffs altogether AND Phil Jackson is for some reason interested and available over the summer, I can't think of any reason that the Rockets shouldn't look into acquiring him. If the Rockets show improvement this season, such as taking the first round seven games, or making the second round or by some miracle, further, then I'm all for keeping JVG, believe me.

I think it's all a bunch of fluff. Anytime there is a big name on the Market or a good head coach available, they will always be associated with the Knicks. It's all a part of the New York media circle.

That would be nice, except for the only problem- both are pretty strong headed coaches so I really don't see how they can work together. Plus Van Gundy has already established himself as the coach and in my opinion, is actually doing a pretty nice job at it. Changing coaches I think would only hurt our chances of getting a championship since all the players would need to adjust to a new system, which takes time. Considering most of our players are old veterans, I don't really think we have all the time in the world here.

Getting Phil would be a great boost for the franchise but I don't really see it happening. The McMing combo might tempt him but I don't see him coaching the team any time soon.

If it's possible that it will happen, i'll welcome him with open arms. I'd love to have a coach of his caliber bring the franchise to the next level.

I was somewhat harsh with Van Gundy earlier in the season, but it appears that the team has loosed up the offense a bit since that time and so I don't really have a problem with him. I think he could be a bit more energetic on the sidelines during games (like clap more when the Rockets make a good play, instead of just standing stoicly with his arms crossed), but he's a very good strategist who clearly knows a lot about the game. I think Van Gundy might be a better strategist, whereas Phil Jackson is a better motivator and recruiter. I also think that Van Gundy's style of coaching really pays off in the postseason when he gets ample time to prepare his teams. His teams rarely underachieve in the playoffs. Remember, he got an 8th seed all the way to the NBA Finals one year. Could Phil Jackson have done that?
