<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets made a move to bolster their weak frontcourt Friday, claiming veteran center Elden Campbell off waivers from the Utah Jazz.

Traded from Detroit to Utah on January 21, the 7-foot Campbell was waived by the Jazz on Wednesday.

In New Jersey, the 36-year-old Campbell should help a team that has one of the NBA's worst frontcourts. The Nets have been depleted up front since trading forwards Aaron Williams and Eric Williams to Toronto in a deal for Vince Carter on December 17. </div>

Elden said he would retire If Nets claimed him off waivers, he wanted to return to Detroit

    Screw Rod Thorn.

I hope Campbell would goto New Jersey, and make his mind to play with Kidd,Carter. We really need him in the front court. He has a ring, it really doesn't need backing to detroit.

really i didnt know that. thats sad when you think of it, i mean the fact that he might retire because of this.

i think this was a good pick up for the nets and maybe also the nets could pick up coleman too if hes not ont he pistons roster. These guys are both old but anything can help the nets at this point. i believe bot of these guys have at leats a year left in them.

Anyone know what happens with cap restrictions and his salary when a player retires?

Does the team have to pay the entire salary?
Does the salary stay on the cap?

the thing is though if he decides to retire(which he said he was if not gonig back to detriot) then the nets still have to pay him the 5 million that it takes to claim him

Thats not the point and you know It

Another poster on another board summed It up best

"Campbell let it be known he'd simply retire if picked up by the Nets. Which makes sense, he's 36, was probably going to retire in 3 months anyway, and he has no desire to relocate or separate from his family for the remainder of the season. He's made plenty of money over the course of his career, so he can simply call it quits and permanently move back to SoCal. Knowing all this ahead of time, why would Thorn pick him up? What does it do other than screw over Campbell? Basically Thorn deprived a veteran player of the final three months of his career and a title run. I feel bad for Soup."

It's simply insulting to a vet like Campbell to force him to play for a team who aren't going anywhere this year, more so when you consider he is at the end of his career and deserves to be on a contender.

He has a championship already, no sweat, he can just chill....I actually thought the Pistons would pick him up too, but it isn't an "insult" to him, it's the Nets being desperate for size, and getting tired of having games where theyget outrebounded by 20.

he hasnt reported yet. that most likely means he doesnt want to play for the nets. why would he want go to detroit. they traded and in my opnion that means they didnt want him. if i was him detroit would be the third last time i would want to go to. the two teams i wouldnt want to go to would be charlotte and hornets [IMG]

Help, apparently, is on the way. The Nets announced Sunday that Elden Campbell, the 7-foot center they claimed off waivers against his wishes on Friday, had agreed to join the team. He is scheduled to have a physical Tuesday. The Nets (18-26), who are three games out of first place in the Atlantic Division, play host to the equally resurgent Chicago Bulls at Continental Arena on Tuesday night. "Elden is going to report," Campbell's agent, Richard Howell, said in a telephone interview Sunday. "He never said he wasn't going to report. Never." New York Times

"It is still possible Campbell will file a grievance with the league, challenging the Nets' ability to use their $5 million trade exception to claim him and his $4.4 million salary this season against the salary cap. But Thorn said, "The N.B.A. says it's legal, and the N.B.A. has top-flight lawyers." Campbell, 36, a 16-year N.B.A. veteran, was traded to Utah from Detroit on Jan. 21 as part of the deal that sent Carlos Arroyo to the Pistons. The Jazz never asked Campbell to report, and it was understood that Utah would waive him, which it did on Wednesday." New York Times

I read in the post today that Campbell will report to the Nets:

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">fter talking with family and advisors, veteran center Elden Campbell, claimed by the Nets off waivers, told team president Rod Thorn yesterday that he would report to the team. The 7-0 Campbell, 36, is expected tomorrow.

Campbell had hinted about retiring ? in which case he would have lost $2.2 million. Thorn did not present a selling job, but just laid out the situation.</div>

good man. I'd take 2.2 million for a couple months of work too. Plus he'll probably get oggles of playing time, compared to detroit.
