CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers addressed their need for an outside shooter Thursday by acquiring guard Jiri Welsch from the Boston Celtics for a 2007 first-round draft pick.

ESPN Insider Chad Ford reports the Cavs acquired Welsch using a $1.5 million trade exception.

Welsch, who started for Boston earlier this season, should help the Cavaliers improve their 3-point shooting. The club is 27th out of 30 teams in the NBA on 3-pointers. Welsch has made 32 of 99 3-point attempts this season.

Welsch, 25, was dropped from the Celtics' starting lineup last month when the team changed its rotation. He's likely to come off the bench for the Cavaliers, whose reserves have scored just 14 points in Cleveland's last two games.

good move by the Cavs. Welsch gives that range they need and is fiarly solid all around. He could turn into a 14-5-4 guy.

The East is quickly taking back the reigns baby!

I like this trade by the Cavs. They add another shooter to the fold and by trading away their pick in '07 they are making a statement that they will be in contention for the East for years to come.

Potential Lineups

PG- McInnis
SG- Weslch
SF- LBJ
PF- Gooden
C- Iglauskas
Sixth man- Newble

OR

PG- McInnis
SG- Newble
SF- LBJ
PF- Gooden
C- Iglauskas
Sixth Man- Weslch

I like the second lineup a lot better than the first. Newble is not really a guy that you can expect to bring a spark off the bench. He is best known for his above average perimetre defence. Bringing Welsch off the bench would provide a good offensive player coming off the bench and another shooter for Lebron to pass to.

If I'm a Cavs fan I don't like this deal. This hurts their effort in trying to bring in Redd or Allen. Also Welsch is signed through 2007, which is the same year the draft pick is for. Welsch is a nice fit for the team, but he's hardly the impact player Redd or Allen is, and possibly the draft pick would be. At least the Cavs are active for this year's playoff push.

^It doesn't look like Redd is going to be leaving Milwaukee anytime soon. Rumours say that he has been taken off the market by the Bucks and he has even stated that he wants to re-sign with Milwaukee as well as retire there.

I believe Welsch is signed for about 5 mill for the next 2 seasons, the Cavs would still have a chance at signing Ray if the Sonics were willing to do a sign and trade involving Welsch. I still think that Ray might stay in Seattle. Just a gut feeling.

The Welsch deal looks a lot better now for the Cavs, because I also doubt Allen would sign with them, and if he's even worth a max contract. The Cavs needed to make a move to help them secure the 4th seed. The Wizards are only a half game back and are getting Hughes back soon along with Kwame. 76ers should improve with Webber, and the Pacers are starting to hit their stride.

Yeah, that's we got Welsch because Redd now says he wants to be a Buck, and we really needed a perimiter shooter. Welsch will most likely be coming off the bench and should be a solid player for this team. So, I really like this trade because we finally get that shooter, but I'd like to know of we're going to keep Luke Jackson still...

I like this trade but i really think that the cavs still need another average scorer from outside to even think of being considered a eastern conference title contender. The chemistry is there, the depth is almost there, they have the role players, but they still dont have that one outside shooter to put them over the top, welsch is just not consistent enough to put them over the top. We need to be able to spread the floor and let Z work down low and give room for LBJ to drive and create for his teammates and of course we need a player to knock down the shots from outside.
