should sixers get a new coach? i was just wondering if anybody thinks the sixers need a new coach. i understand that JOB was a good coach in Boston, but he doesn't seem like he's doing a good job here. An example is that he doesn't give the young players, exept Iggy Korver and now Dalembert to develope. I don't understand why he doens't let green or salmons play more. both are good players with bright futures in my opinion, but they need to play more. early in the season, JOB was barely even playing Sammy. it seems the only young guys he constently plays are Korver and Iggy. Also, when the team is struggling on defense, which they have been doing all season, he refuses to change the gameplans. and also, players on the team don't like him much, like sammy, and kenny, who is traded, and it seems that C-Webb doesn't like him much either. i think that JOB should be replaced, and i don't think he's agood fit for this team. i didn't think his hiring would work out, and guess what, i'm right.
i'm thnkin about the same thing...with the way the 76ers are currently playin...they shud definitely hire a new coach...Obie just sucks! I don't thnk he makes CWebb fit into his system that's why they're screwed up...But you know,3 coaches in 2 seasons aint that gud...
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Peja King:</div><div class="quote_post">he didnt even make Brian Skinner play while he was with the sixers, look at him now</div> Yea, I don't follow alot of Sixers games, but everyone was bashing Skinner, and calling it a bad signing (cuz of the contract), but this guy can live up to his contract and more if given PT. He's just a beast. Just check the Kings games.
I`ve been hearing alot of speculation in the last couple of days that they should fire Obie. I just don`t know. I mean when the Sixers lose, he may sometimes say WE almost had that, WE could of played better. But it makes you say or think...its your fault we`re losing these games. He draws up the strategies and the players show it off on the court. But maybe the plays they do doesn`t work for the team but O`Brien keeps running his plays. For now, I`m not sure if I want to send Obie packing...
This news is a little late, and it was actually reported yesterday for that matter. But nevertheless, here is the news... After the blow lost to the Raptors and the poorest defensive performance this season, it was rumored that something may done with Jim O'Brien very soon and possibly in the next couple of days/weeks if not Billy King may be facing a very tough decision in the off-season. This news came directly from ESPN Radio but originally reported from some reporter under the name ?Eskin?. Well the rumor also indicated that the Sixers Front Office is becoming quite "iffy" with O'Brien and they are willing to get rid of him as soon as they can. Billy King seems to be the only that still appreciates O'Brien which is not a very strong fan base for him. Lastly, this rumor also stated that some of the players, particularly Chris Webber, John Salmons and Samuel Dalembert are losing some respect for him. Granted that these rumors are true, this is not good news for Jim O?Brien. He better hopes this team shapes up and makes the Conference Finals or something if he wants to coach this team again next season. Also, it?s a good thing we didn?t hear Allen Iverson name in the group of players that?s losing respect for Obie because if Iverson started losing some respect for him?we can automatically rule O?Brien out on his chances at coaching this ball club next season. So again, I got this info via ESPN Radio and all this speculation came up immediately after the loss to the Raptors. So what is your take on this? Should something be done with O'Brien now or maybe during the off-season? <div align="center">--</div> I for one believe, we should let him finish the season because a firing would be too hectic and from that point on we would bring in Mo Cheeks in the off-season and even though he is supposedly not good with the X's and O's, who cares? As long as we get an actual defensive scheme, I'll be happy. To be honest that is the only think that really irks be about O'Brien. He is a good coach, but the fact that his defensive scheme or shall I say Dick Harter defensive scheme is bad and also forcing players to adjust to his system gets me annoyed. I don?t know why he just won?t let the players play the way they're comfortable and in which they can be most effective. He is too stubborn to let things go with the flow, and it?s either his way or no way. And that is his biggest problem in my opinion.
As of now, I say it?s to late to fire him. The Sixers are already more then half ways finished with the season and only have 18 games left( I think). Firing coach O?Brien now would basically ruin are chances of making the playoffs. I will say that we should consider looking for other coaches this off-season though. Even though AI thrives in the offense, the defensive scheme is horrendous and O?Brien hasn't done a thing to improve that even though it's been a problem since the beginning of the season. But remember the 76ers still have about 18 games left, and you never know what the result of those games may be so right now I think most people should focus on finishing the season rather then changing the coaching staff at this point.
My main problem with O'Brien is his strategies. Its not that their bad, its that they don't work for this team. Sure they might have worked in Boston, but this is Philadelphia, a totally different team that has a lot less shooters than Boston did when he coached there. Plus, he doesn't let any of the players find rhythm and do what they do best, but instead just stick them into his system. Examples of this would be Dalembert and Webber. Dalembert is an awesome defensive player and is a monstrous shot blocker. Instead of putting him into the paint, O'Brien puts him pretty far away from the basket, basically making his defensive skills no use at all. Webber on the other hand is a great passer. Sure a lot of assists have to do with team chemistry, but if only O'Brien put Webber in positions that he could thrive assisting in- there wouldn't be that huge drop in assists that Webber had going to this team. In addition to that, his strategies only really work for Iverson and Korver. But it really makes me mad how two of our best players at the end of last year- Dalembert and Green aren't doing much in his offensive strategy. Who's fault is that? The players are told what to do and benched if they don't do it, so its obvious the two aren't thriving under his conditions. Yet he doesn't change anything. Part of this has to do with Iverson, but I guess its kind of a double edged sword right there. Overall, I think I want to wait until the offseason and see how everything pans out before firing O'Brien. I mean, right now the question whether or not we even make the playoffs hangs in question.
O'Brien disliked by players and personell? Article <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> On a night of predictable euphoria against a Lakers squad barely worth watching anymore, there were still ominous signs dangling around the Wachovia Center. All aimed in the direction of coach Jim O'Brien. Upon game's end, the 76ers still were two games below .500. Still four games behind the Boston Celtics in a race for the Atlantic Division crown. Still a half-game removed from the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Still utterly uninterested in playing for their coach. Despite shellacking Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, 108-91, Tuesday night, nobody needed news about a chipped bone in Allen Iverson's thumb to sully their mood or ruin their spirit. All anyone needed to do was witness Chris Webber exit the game, snarling at O'Brien along the way, his body language screaming "Get me out of here," before the rest of his teammates subsequently provided high-fives. </div> Source This article is done by (Screamin) Stephen A. Smith so the opinion must be taken with a grain of salt at all times.
It is all about defense. Their offense works just fine. They score over 100 pts regularly. If they could fix the defense, they would be fine.
<font color="Black"><font size="2"><font face="Verdana">I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, until Chris Webber becomes willing to post up underneath the basket, no coach is going to be able to make the Webber-Iverson combination work. When Sixers fans first heard that we had aquired Webber, we all celebrated, and understandably so. However, at that point in time we all believed that we were getting a big man to complement Iverson. We didn't. Those of you who have watched Webber's game very carefully should have noticed that he has played very similarly to one of the players that we gave to Sacramento in the trade - Kenny Thomas. I do not intend to say that these players are one in the same, though. Webber launches much more shots and does not attack the offensive glass with the same agressiveness as Thomas. Yeah, that's right. Last year when Iverson was injured and Kenny had assumed the lead role, he was playing at a significantly higher level than Webber currently is. From this evidence, one can conclude that Webber is not the missing piece that the Sixers organization has been searching for. We need a big man. Chris Webber does not fit that description.</font></font></font>
That's Webber's game and if people have been watching him for the past two years they would know that he relies on the midrange jumper. Webber's knee is constantly swelling, that?s why he is quick or as aggressive as he once was. The thing about Webber is he has been rebounding for us pretty well, and he can make plays for the rest of the team. I just wish people would stop making so many assumptions. Blockbuster trades take time!
I agree with bits and pieces of all the arguments going around. Personally i think the trade was good and that given time, a lot of haters will soon recognise. However, I am not 100% sure that Jim O'Brien is the man for the job and now that MO CHEEKS is available, the sixers should jump on him like a starving man on a christmas ham. Bring the boy back home!!! At this point of the season, i am just rooting for the sixers to string some wins together and make the playoffs. Iverson will do the rest!!!
If you think that the players have lost respect in O'Brien then you would see them starting to get lazy, not going for rebounds, not helping on defence, not going for lose balls, stuff like that and I don't see the Sixers doing any of this. A great example of the Sixers not doing this was Andre Iguodala's play against the Big Z to take away his fast break basket. Also the Sixers are in the middle of a playoff run and I don't think they will fire their coach now, I know Orlando did it but everybody has different situations. Keep O'Brien for now, but in the off-season if Chris Webber comes up to Billy King and says me or him, I would think Billy would pick Webber.
