The Hawks will likely end up with the 1st or 2nd pick in this year's draft. The Hawks have plenty of talent at the 'Swing' position, and their two glaring needs are at Center and Point Guard. What player and need should the Hawks address in this year's draft? Andrew Bogut? Chris Paul? Deron Williams? Marvin Williams? Should they trade down or trade the pick outright?
This is exactly what I was asking myself last night, but after considering the options I decided that they should go after Bogut. Chris Paul is undersized, and drafting undersized early doesn't always work out. As far as I know, it has only worked once (Iverson). As many have said in the past, you can't teach size. Bogut is their man. BTW - Marvin Williams will most likely be staying at UNC for another year at the least.
I'd go with Deron. I honestly feel that Bogut will have the best career in the league form this draft crop. But it seems that they're building around speed, agility, fast-break basketball. Bogut hardly fits that criteria. Bogut's real flaw is speed, he has energy and all that, but his speed is what he really lacks. And that is what fuels Atlanta's game. Deron Williams brings some speed, quickness - and real energy. He has pulse to his game while he can lead a break. I feel that Atlanta should make a serious bid for Kwame Brown, trade down from the #1 a couple of picks (not too far down at all, mind you) or perhaps stay at 1 if his stock rises - and draft Deron. He seems to suit the Hawks now, he has the elements to his game that Atlanta is building around, he has the work ethic as well. He also brings a sensation of winning with him (or so it seems). That type of energy really helps a team, he could be that spark that Atlanta needs to bring themselves to at least a respectable status. I say: Sign Kwame, and draft Deron Williams.
I really like Bogut, but I don't see him fitting into the style Atlanta is playing. The Hawks are playing uptempo with Josh Smith, Harrington, Josh Childress, and Lue. Bogut is more effective in halfcourt sets, and really doesn't run up and down the floor very well. The Hawks might want to consider pursing Kwame Brown, Stromile Swift, Tyson Chandler, or Sam Dalembert in the summer instea, to land a center. Of course drafting Bogut does give them a big piece to trade. I agree with Chris Paul, I have a feeling he also returns, but like you said he's undersized, and he might hurt the Hawks defensively. The best fit might actually be Deron Williams. He's an amazing passer, imagine him getting the ball to Smith and Harrington on fastbreaks. His vision and playmaking remind me a lot of Jason Kidd.
Knicks Analyst, Deron would be a good fit for the Hawks but I would rather take Bogut because he's the old school big man and he's good. He's not no 7-footer from Europe that shoots threes or comes in and try's to run the point. And for the PG situation in ATL, they shoud trade their second rounder and Tyronn Lue for a late first round pick to take Jarret Jack, IMO Jack would be a great fit for the Hawks and he doesnt need to be told what to do more than once, but this could be a little biased considering Jack is my favorite collegic player. If what I said were to happen this would be the Hawks Lineup: PG: Jarret Jack/Tony Delk/Royal Ivey SG: Josh Childress/Boris Diaw/Tony Delk/Donta Smith SF: Josh Smith/Boris Diaw/Donta Smith PF: Al Harrington/Tom Gugliotta/Obinna Ekezie C: Andrew Bogut/Peja Drobnjak/Kevin Willis/Obinna Ekezie Thats the lineup without any free agent acquistions or trades, and to me that looks real good compared to this year, and theres no need to draft small with our Lottery pick because theres a good # of PG's in this years draft like Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Jarret Jack, Raymond Felton, Monta Ellis (HS), Louis Williams (HS), Nate Robinson and Salim Stoudamire. I dont think the Wizards will let Kwame walk but if they do that would be a nice addition to the Hawks.
Draft big, Bogut seems like the real deal to me. I think he can be a 20pts/10rbs/5asts kind of player, which we desperately need. I would also try to draft a PG in the second round, Luther Head. PG Luther Head SG Josh Childress SF Josh Smith PF Al Harrington C Andrew Bogut Too bad we don't have another first, because I REALLY think Louis Williams is going to be an amazing player. Imagine him coming off the bench, .
DawgHawk - Luther Head would be a solid choice for any team. He's often overlooked playing alongside Deron Williams and Dee Brown, but Head might end up being the best out of the trio. Luther Head can score from anywhere on the court, and can shut his player down. If the Hawks draft Bogut should they make him the franchise player to build around?

Bogut, Smith, Childress, Harrington is actually a pretty nice collection of young talent. Definately an improvement from a few years ago. I like Luther Head, too. Aaron Miles is another option, he reminds me a little bit like Chris Duhon who has been rock solid for Chicago this year.
I ask about Bogut, because I'm not sure Smith, Harrington, and Childress are the right guys to have to build around Bogut's skill set. None of those players are consistent or dangerous enough from the perimeter. Bogut is a post player, and the rest are primarily slashers. It could get crowded in a hurry inside with these players together. Also Bogut is not a fast player by any means. If the Hawks draft Bogut, I'd imagine they trade either Childress or Harrington?
Maybe down the road, but not right away. I think Harrington is not in the future plans, but right now his contract is a bargain and we have no other PF so he'll stay in Atlanta for now. I think right now Atlanta is just concerned about getting talent on the roster, then make trades later on to fill needs.
Luther Head would be viable option for the Hawks and I wouldnt mind seeing him in a Hawks Uniform, but if we have a way to get Jarret Jack then I say we take, it and Bogut would be the franchise player And I think we should sign someone who is experienced and can shoot from outside.
Bogut, definately because everyone NEEDS a 7 footer with the amazing skills already, and is only 20. And if it doesn't work out with him you could easily trade him for alot.
hawks have really been horrible in draft day, before they drafted pau gasol and stromile swift and traded them both away for abdur-rahim... hawks need to make up what they did past years and havnt made the team better, probably get a guard like felton or a big man likebogut
I really think the Hawks should go ahead and jump on Bogut. Reason being is becasue quality centers are very hard to come across these days, and the Hawks have learned that the hard way. Drafting him may be different from what the scheme already is in Atl but I think the players there can make nessecary adjustments without problems.
I would draft Bogut if he's on the board. If not, I'll try to trade up for him. Big men in bodies like Bogut with skills that he has are hard to come by. I'll take him no doubt. They have to have a plan after that too on the same day IMO, either trading Childress, or Harrington (with Diaw if needed), to get a pick where they can possibly draft an experience PG like Jack.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Tesh15:</div><div class="quote_post">hawks have really been horrible in draft day, before they drafted pau gasol and stromile swift and traded them both away for abdur-rahim... hawks need to make up what they did past years and havnt made the team better, probably get a guard like felton or a big man likebogut</div> Huh? Stromile Swift was drafted a year ahead of Gasol, at the second spot in the 2001 draft with the Grizzlies original pick. The trade was just Gasol for Abdur-Rahim. A better deal for the Hawks at the time would have been to draft Eddy Curry and trade him to Chicago for Elton Brand, but I have no complaints that they went for Abdur-Rahim. As for the Hawks draft, I would go with Chris Paul. With athletic wings in Smith and Childress, also with Al Harrington who likes to get out on the break, Paul would be a perfect fit. Atlanta looks to be going to a run-n-gun offense in the future and Paul pushes the ball as well as any of them. Drafting Bogut would be a viable decision as well, considering the fact that Ekezie, Collier and Willis aren't exactly talented centers, but the Hawks also have a very weak point guard crop, featuring Kenny Anderson, Donta Smith and Royal Ivey. Both big and small need upgrading, and it would make sense for the Hawks to go either way, but with their players right now, I see them going with Chris Paul.
Trip, Kenny Anderson got cut, signed with the Clippers, and got cut again. You also forgot about Tyrone Lue. He's been playing great for the Hawks and leads them in APG at 5.2. They also have Tony Delk off the bench. Tyrone Lue has been a solid starter for them the last two months. February Stats - 13.2PPG, 6.2APG, 91% FT%, 51% FG%, 2.3TOs March Stats - 15.0PPG, 5.7APG, 91% FT%, 47% FG%, 1.9TOs Also there is no guarantee Chris Paul declares, in fact he's said several times he's returning to Wake next year. If the Hawks get the #1 pick, Bogut is the best choice. Or the Hawks could possibly trade out of it, they can demand a lot for the rights to Bogut. Jarrett Jack would be a great fit for this team. He's a talented point guard, and more importantly will help ticket sales and bring some much needed Buzz to Atlanta basketball.

Good that I traded him to fill salaries a few days ago. My bad on Lue. I totally forgot about him. The only Hawks game I've seen this season was before he got there, so it slipped my mind. I would say Paul is going to declare. Anytime you're a top 3 pick, it takes a idiot to pass on this situation. As bad as he might want to win a NCAA championship in his college career, I doubt he would want to pass up the NBA money. Now that I realize the Hawks have Lue at point guard, then I would say that they should draft Bogut. Big men like him are hard to pass upon and it would be reasonable to have him in the middle, considering there weak center crop. Would trading the pick be really ideal? Shape, what do you think can be gotten for that number 1 pick and Bogut's draft rights? Can it fetch the Hawks a quality player and two first round picks? Or even more?
Good question, I'm not sure what Bogut is worth, but I would say the Hawks could get at least two quality players for him. The Hawks have a lot of options this off-season. They are well below the salary cap and with some young stars they might actually be able to land a good free agent this year. The Hawks pursued Stromile Swift last season and they like Kwame Brown as well. The Hawks could possibly pull off a deal with the Wizards to package Kwame, Jarvis Hayes, and Dixon or Blake for the pick. Or they could possibly trade the pick and Delk for Swift and Jason Williams? Memphis needs to clear up cap space because they have Swift, Watson, and Battier as free agents this summer. The Hawks have a chance to take advanatge of that. Atlanta's New Lineup PG - Jason Williams SG - Josh Childress SF - Al Harrington PF - Josh Smith C - Stromile Swift Memphis New Lineup PG - Earl Watson SG - Mike Miller SF - Shane Battier PF - Paul Gasol C - Andrew Bogut
draft andrew and traded him to philly for kyle korver and sammy. that would just solve the problem. Philly could use a 7footer that can score and dish. Allen would love to have him. pg Iverson sg green sf Andre pf Webber c Bogut
